Stocking your make-up kit
I thought there was a list like this somewhere, but I can't seem to find it...
I own absolutely NO make-up... but I'm a little grossed out by the thought of someone using THEIR make-up on me for my wedding. Can you give me a "shopping list" to take to the store so I can stock my own wedding-day make-up kit?? Just the basics, please, nothing too fancy or hard to find (though feel free to recommend specific products)!

Hi Julz!
This is a great idea for a topic. Many women don't feel comfortable having a makeup artist thier makeup on them (although when done correctly, the makeup is scooped from thier container to a palette so nothing is contaminated) but nonetheless, this will be very useful for yourself as well as other brides.
Here is a list I have compiled that you can take to you local drugstore as well as to the department stores and the local Sephora/ULTA:
Skincare:
-The basis to great looking makeup is properly preparing your skin. Here are the three skin care steps recommended by dermatologists and products recommended by them as well:
Cleanse
*Cetaphil cleanser (drugstore)
Tone
*Witch Hazel (drugstore) note: this item is made by different companies, so you can purchase the drugstore's own brand and it will be just fine.
Moisturize
*Cetaphil moisturizer (drugstore)
Foundations
-This is the one item that you should spend the most on. It makes the difference in the way your skin will read on the photographs.
*Smashbox (Sephora,ULTA, or department store) There is a new liquid foundation that is formulated to work with the flash of a camera. It is called High Definition Healthy Fx Foundation. They also have a great lighter liquid foundation called Studio Seamless Liquid Foundation. If you are not comfortable with a liquid foundation, I recommend their Conversion Cream to Powder Foundation, or their Wet/Dry Powder Foundation.
*Benefit (Sephora, ULTA, or department store) I recommend the Playsticks. They are a concealer and foundation in one, thus cutting down on the time and amount of product you are putting on your skin.
Powders
*Sally Hansen Cornsilk powders(drugstore/ULTA) With a good foundation, you only need to set it with a loose powder. These are great because they are colorless, and you can slip a pressed one into your bag to blot out shine.
Blush
* Rimmel London Mono Blush (drugstore/ULTA) I love this blush! they are very subtle and pretty. If you prefer something with a little more "punch", try L'oreal Blush Délice (drugstore/ULTA)
Eyeshadows
*Believe it or not, some of the best eyeshadow I have are from Milani (drugstore/ULTA) but since these can't be found everywhere, I also like Benefits Big Beautiful Eyes kit that has four shadows to create a beautiful, contoured but natural eye. Smashbox also makes a three color Eye Lights palettewith beautiful, soft shimmery shadows in coordinating colors. You can also just visit your favorite makeup company and have them help you choose a personal eyeshadow palette.
Eyeliner
*L'oreal HIP cream eyeliners (drugstore/ULTA) or Maybelline's Unstoppable eyeliner collections. Hands down, these are the best eyeliners for your money that I have tried. Sure, other brands have similar products, but if you want to save a few dollars, I would highly recommend these.
Mascara
* Maybelline Lash Stylist in the waterproof formulation or Maybelline Define-A-Lash for a more natural look. If you want to splurge on something nice, Diorshow Mascara, Lancome Fatale or Lancome Hypnôse Waterproof
Lipsticks
* Revlon Super Lustrous® Lipstick , Rimmel - London Lasting Finish Lipstick (drugstore/ULTA) these are two great formulations of lipstick. Again, if you want to splurge, I would buy anything from Chanel or Lancome.
Ligloss
*Milani has beautiful lipglosses that I use all the time, and they only cost $5! What a steal! L'oreal also makes some nice ones, and if you feel the need to treat yourself, anything from Chanel!
Good luck ,and if any of you have favorites, please add to the list!

Thank you for bringing this up Julz! Great topic! I was just thinking to myself what kinds of foundations (all the ones I own have SPF in them) I should buy for the wedding. Great list too!

Wow! That list is a lot less intimidating then I thought it would be! And I actually know (for the most part) what each of the products is supposed to do Thanks!
A couple more questions:
About foundation - once upon a time I used a cream-to-powder (I think)foundation. If I use something like this I don't need to use powder, right? But if I use liquid foundation, then I also need a powder to set it?
What is concealer? Is it the same as cover-up (for zits)? Do I need it?
Lipstick/lipgloss - do I need both, one or the other, or does it depend on the look I want? I noticed lipliner isn't on the list (and I've never used it and have no clue, so I'm glad)... do I need it?
Thanks again!

If you are an oily person, you might have to set the cream-to-powder foundation with loose powder just to make sure you don't get the "oily breakthrough" after a short amount of time. If you are on the dryer-normal side, then you should be fine with the powder contained within the product.
Concealers are generally used to cover under eye discoloration, and blemishes. However, with more and more companies making many of their foundations with yellow and golden undertones, they usually cancel out slight to moderate discolorations. If you have severe discoloration, you may have to use a separate concealer. As for blemishes, I have found rather than cake on concealer, I use *believe it or not!* liquid bandaid over the blemish(es), allow it to dry, then apply the foundation as normal. The liquid bandaid creates a barrier so that the blemish isn't "slick" and the foundation will set right over it with out any problems. It makes the complexion appear smoother and less product is always a plus.
The lipstick/lipgloss combination is totally up to you. If you prefer a creamy lipstick with no lipgloss, that's fine! Some ladies like alot of shine and gloss, so they will add that no matter what. It's personal opinion. As far as lip liner, I've noticed the trends are moving away from them. Especially for bridal, when you don't want to look heavily made up. My rule of thumb now is if you aren't trying to make your lips look bigger or evening out an uneven lip line, you can just put foundation over your lips when you are applying it to your face, and it will create a base for the lipstick to adhere better to, thus cutting out the need for lip liner. For those that do want lip liner recommendations, I love Rimmel London's(drugstore) lip liners for when I do use them, and for higher end Lancome.

That is crazy that the liquid bandaid would work...it makes sense, I just would have NEVER have thought to use that. Great idea!! I love this thread!

The wonders of average household products I have also used liquid bandaid to cover a burn caused by eyebrow waxing that was done incorrectly. This was the mother of the bride, and she was so happy to see that no one knew she even had a burn.

Wow, Really? I have a lot of spotty blemishes on my arms from sun exposure (I have super-sensitive skin) and will try this trick. Thanks!
