Hello Julie!
What does your time schedule look like for the morning of your wedding? Will you have time to do your own hair in a relaxed pace? Lots of brides with short hair say they enjoyed the process of doing their hair themselves, that because it's a familiar practice, it got kind of Zen for them to do their own hair and have a part of their look be their own work. I'd suggest you make an appointment with a professional hairstylist for a 'trial run' so that you can see if she does anything different, gets more lift for your style, recommends a styling product that's perfect for the outdoors, etc. At the least, you might get some useful tips you can do on your own. These trial runs aren't very expensive, and it could be a nice, relaxing treat to have an afternoon at the salon with a friend.
I've also heard from brides who say that they have practiced with different kinds of curling irons borrowed from friends, rather than buying. I've always used the same curling iron, but I just discovered a great, new, thinner cedramic curling iron that they used to do my hair for a TV show, and it gave a much better, longer-lasting curl to my bangs. It's now my favorite new thing.
Let's hear some ideas from the other brides on this board...
