Question Hiring a wedding planner/coordinator just for the big day?

In discussing various details for the big day, decorating, etc.... FH asked me yesterday, "If we don't have attendants, who is going to handle things like that for us?" (a lot of the smaller, wedding day details that MOH, BM, etc... would traditionally handle). I told him I'm sure we can handle most of it ourselves, and our friends would be more than happy to help... but then later an idea struck - what if we hired a wedding planner just for the DAY (or maybe the day before and then the wedding day)....

So my question is -- can this be done? Has anyone done this? And if so, any ideas on what this would cost us?

I just think this would alleviate a LOT of stress from the two of us, and would keep us from burdening our friends (whom we also just want to just be able to enjoy the day).

Well, it's up to you of course, but I don't think I would waste the money. We were lucky in that the place we had the ceremony & reception had a coordinator so she handled everything the day of.

You could ask your Mom, FMIL or a good friend to help with the day. Just give him or her a list of what should happen when the day of. You're going to have everything figured out before the day anyway so you'll know what's going on, but it can't hurt to have someone as your back up.

A lot of coordinators DO offer day-of services, if you think you really need it. But unless you've got a ton of stuff to coordinate...nah. Actually, our wedding party didn't really do anything the day of. The guys were also the ushers, but that was it, except for handling me! Holding flowers, rings, veils, thats sort of thing. I asked the wife of one of DH's best men, who wasn't in the wedding party, to act as my "go to" person. I made sure she had a list of the vendors and when and where they should be with contact numbers in case something went wrong (for example, our DJ was 45 min. late. Wasn't actually a problem because they weren't playing the cocktail hour, but I never even knew about it--Annette handled it). She had a corsage and I made sure the families and wedding party members knew who she was and that they could go to her, made sure the folks at Maggiano's knew who she was also. I think it is helpful to have someone like that even when you do have a wedding party, because they sometimes need to be somewhere other than handling something that's going wrong with the set up of the reception, for example. But I don't think it needs to be a paid profession unless you've got a very complicated set up or tons and tons of details that need to be managed.

Wow, that was long winded!!

No, no, not long winded at all....

But see, those are exactly the kinds of things I'd like to have a professional on-hand for, rather than appointing a friend/guest to do them.

Hmmmmm......

If its just the day then maybe someone could help you out. We have ushers who do that job, and its usually male friends or family.

We're not having ushers or attendants of any kind.
