We googled photographers in our area then went and visited the ones who's galleries we liked and who listed reasonable prices online.

Hmm...sort of a cross between friend/word of mouth/magazine ad. He is the photographer for my theater group; I didn't know he was also a wedding photog until I saw his ad in a local magazine and checked out his website.

She a member of a message board that I've been a part of for about 7 years. A couple of years ago she got serious about photography as a profession and I've been able to watch her progress. She is building up her wedding portfolio right now and she's really, really good!
If she didn't work out I googled photogs in this area and contacted them about their pricing.

Craigslist and Superpages... I checked out any photographer who had a website, and paid special attention to those who advertised prices. Those two things were important to me b/c I want my guests to be able to view the pics online and I didn't want to waste my time meeting with a photographer I knew was out of my price range.
I also posted a request for a photographer on a local Bridal "classifieds" and gots TONS of responses... but they were all very expensive (i.e. the type who can afford bridal shows). I think the guy I ended up going with I found on Superpages.com.

A girl I used to work with had also worked at a catering hall and worked weddings there, and she got to know their photographer and recommended him.

My mom & this guy (Joe) used to have a photography studio together. So I called Joe up and asked him in he would take my bridal portraits, and so he could enjoy the wedding, refer me to someone for the ceremony & reception pics. But instead he offered to take the ceremony & reception pictures... So Joe will do it all, but my mom is also bringing her camera only because she loves taking pictures and wants to get some of her own from the reception

We got married in Orange County, CA. Photographers there charge your 1st born child... since we weren't planning on having children together, that wasn't a possibility!!!
There are several wedding forums for that area. The Knot has a REALLY great forum for that area with lots of helpful brides. I was able to weed out bad vendors (that were on my list) and find an up and comming photographer that we loved... and fit our budget. (since he was new)

I asked several friends that had gotten married in the area, did research online, etc. I ended up going with a photographer that my hairstylist recommended...she has just gotten married about a year before us.

Bridal show. My mom spotted him first and wanted to go talk to him cuz he didn't seem as "stuffy" as some of the others seemed. We loved him and booked him about two weeks later.
