Default Update on Jen and Casey

It's been almost 3 weeks since the wedding and things have calmed down quite a bit, so I thought I'd share a little bit that's been going on. I haven't been posting much because things have been absolutely crazy, but here goes!

-My freelance work was cut by 50%. I found this out the Monday after my wedding. By Wednesday, I had a job at a local higher end restaurant. The training has absolutely consumed my life--I have had quizzes and tests and finally tonight I start on my own. I have made friends there very quickly, and quite honestly, I feel like I've been asleep for the past two years. As many opportunities as my freelance work held for me, I have realized that I am not supposed to work behind a desk, alone. I feel much happier and more energetic.

Unfortunately, this comes with a price as I am now working mostly nights and DH is working days. His work has picked up as well, which is a good thing, but we don't have a lot of time together anymore. We always have breakfast and watch the news in the morning and try to spend as much time together as we can when I get home. We both had the afternoon off yesterday so we had a great date night. It was tough at first but we're working it out. It's good practice for when we both start grad school and all we'll be able to do is sit beside each other studying!

-Speaking of grad school, I found out I got a fellowship that allows me to not work. It pays tuition, health insurance, and a substantial stipend. This was a huge blessing, as I was beginning to wonder how I was going to earn my PhD AND work 20 hours a week (this was the aid package they had for me before I got the fellowship).

-DH went to look at houses in Kentucky last weekend and came home pretty discouraged. All of the ones we can afford are in really bad neighborhoods. The mortgage person at the bank was extremely rude to him until she saw our credit scores. Then she was as nice as can be. This week, we found a house that looks promising and we are going back to Kentucky on Sunday to check it out.

-I cannot WAIT til our trips at the end of the summer!! I NEED A VACATION!!

That's it. Wish me luck on waiting tables on my own tonight! OH and for some reason everybody there (employees AND customers) think I am REALLY young. Someone actually asked me if this was my first job. Uhh...I'm 23. No, it is not. So maybe also wish my luck on people taking me seriously

Wow! Congrats on the fellowship. That will be a blessing not having to work. I"m working on my masters and have to TA to pay the bills. Ick. What are you studying again?

You'll do great at your new job. Good luck, and knock 'em dead!

Thanks for the update. I'm happy for you that you'll be able to not work during your fellowship. I'm starting to worry about how I'm going to work full-time, raise three kids, do volunteer work, and squeeze in on-line college courses starting this summer.

Thanks! Yeah I was going to have to TA AND do a research assistantship. I have no interest in teaching so I know I would have hated it. I am studying clinical psychology.

Thank you, I was really starting to worry! They had already told me that I didn't get the fellowship but the person who got it backed out I guess. Yay!!

You can do it. It won't be easy, but you can!!

Well, the fellowship starts when I start grad school at the end of August. That's when he'll start grad school too, so we both will be going to classes during the day. So, THEORETICALLY, yes we'll have the same hours. He also got a small fellowship so he will only have to work about 10 hours a week. It is working out nicely.

Sounds like things are pretty busy!

Good luck with the job and hopefully you get some time with DH.

Thanks for the update!!!

I know what you mean about people being rude until they see your credit scores... We experienced that a couple weeks ago when we traded in our car. They kept saying "all of this is conditional on getting a good interest rate, which we can't guarantee you....blah blah blah." We told them we had good credit but I don't think they believed us until they saw the scores; I guess because we are so young. The finance guy even said to DH "You are the man!" which I thought was a little ridiculous. I just wanted to get out of there.

The fellowship is great news!

Good luck on the house hunting, and in ten years, you'll be happy that you look so young. (I still get ID'd and I love it. )

You've been a busy woman! Congrats on the fellowship, and I'm sure the housing will work itself out.
