Default Some Shower Questions - and Details

Ok, so I am hosting a shower (she's having two) for my friend that's getting married in July. I decided to just suck it up and put on a nice front and be done with it. So with that, I'm on to the shower planning. Which leads me to some questions -
Since I am hosting the shower, am I required to give her a gift?
I saw the cutest idea for a centerpiece - would you eat a sucker that was stuck in grass?

Do the colors need or have to match her wedding colors?

And just to run some other ideas past you - would you be somewhat entertained by a gift-type bingo? (Where she opens the gift and you have it on your card you get to mark it?)

Heck, I'll just keep this as an ongoing journal to keep track of everything, lol. Love any ideas you guys have!!!

i'd say:
no on having to give a gift... your time is precious, so is your patience. Gift enough.

i'd eat a sucker stuck in grass... the ones you posted are pretty

I wouldn't think the colors would have to match the wedding... have fun with it (imo)

I like gift bingo.

Bingo is fun!

I would definatley eat a sucker that was in the grass. That's so cute!

Agree with anna your presence and patience is gift enough.

Can't wait to hear more details.

I agree you don't have to give a gift. I dont think that you would have to use the wedding colours if it was themed you would go with a theme colour. I have seen a breakfast at tiffanys theme it was so cute and everything was blue.

I really dont think you have to give her a gift either. I would eat a sucker that was in the grass, as long as it is covered! I really like the ones you posted.

I am not sure on the color scheme. I would do something different but I am not sure if that is "proper"

I haven't decided if I'm going to use a theme or not. I liked the basket theme that BJ posted, but I'm afraid people won't get creative with the "basket" and she'll end up with a massive amount of wicker baskets. I've got a list of themes around here someplace...but even if I don't do a theme, I think I'll just use summer-y colors. That way, it'll include her color (purple) but let me throw in some variety.

How about a garden "tea party"?
That theme can be as elegant as you want or as goofy as the Mad Hatter Tea Party.
I LOVE the grass and suckers. I am going to steal that idea (if I can find daisy suckers) for the one table that has a single mom and a her "tribe" of kids. That way, they have something that ISNT candles or river rock on it.

Something you could do, if a "tea party" is go to the second hand stores and find some tea cups and saucers and small plates. Have some "finger" foods like cucumber sandwiches and things. All very cheap and easy. Don't have to spend $ on wine or a "booze" punch if you are giving them teas and a light punch.

I don't know. I could come up with a million things. I have never had a "shower" for any marriage or baby...but I have thrown quite a few.

Edit: Since your "sucking it up" with this one...don't forget to be annoying and make her make a "bouquet" of her ribbons for her rehersal. LOL

Two steps ahead of you on that one.

As for food...we're just having cake and punch. Maybe mints and peanuts sitting out. I don't a) have the extra $ for a feast and b) feel that the time we're having it (about 2 p.m) does not require food. I'm not even sure the venue allows alcohol...and I'm also not sure anyone (besides me ) would drink it. Lol.

And I just had a decorating idea hit me a minute ago...silver ball ornaments hung around the room and on the tables. Go me! I know I've got two boxes...although I might need more. Think a party supply store would have those in stock this time of year?

I would eat the suckers, very cute - definitely do that.

My girls stuck with my wedding colors when throwing my shower.

I was the MOH at a wedding and planned most of the shower with the other BMs. We each gave a shower gift. However - I was the MOH in a previous wedding and threw the entire shower myself, paid for everything, made all of the food and hosted it at my home. I did not give an extra gift. I didn't even receive a thank you note for that or for the wedding gift. This woman was in my wedding as a BM (only b/c I felt obligated) and I've spoken to her once in three years. She and her hubby did not give us a wedding gift.

Agree with soul - make that awful bouquet hat thing.

I think you would be fine on not getting her a shower gift. As far as I'm concerned throwing her a party is a gift.

Love the suckers in the grass. They're adorable.

Make the shower whatever theme you think she would enjoy. We threw a luau for a wedding I was in last year, and a Mexican fiesta for a friend of mine a few months ago.

I love gift bingo, but i could be that I'm really competitive. lol

So yesterday I go with the bride and the MOB to pick up her dress. That's all fine and dandy. She's a lucky one and doesn't need any alterations at all except for the bustle. So that's a good thing. But on the way up there I was handed a sheet of address labels with the guest list printed on them. There are also return address labels with my info on them. And stamps too, b/c of the postage increase they won't be able to use them. Now, I know it was nice for the MOB to make that for me...but at the same time it's like do you think I'm not capable? Lol. I'm used to it, and I did pay her back for the stamps b/c I would have had to buy them anyways.
So there's that...we went to some craft stores afterwards so I could get the materials to make her unity candle. I did a good chunk of it last night, and as soon as the picture loads I'll post it here. It's not looking too bad if I do say so myself. It's still in progress, I am adding pearls to the center of the flowers and some more grassy things.

Other that that the only other details I found out is that the MOH (she actually called me yesterday morning ) got her dress this past week and now understands why I hate it so much. It fits her the same way it does me...poorly. And she's a few sizes smaller than me too, so it's the way the dress is made. It just made me feel validated in my points against the dress.
Oh, and although I had to ask I guess they do have someone lined up to do our hair...which, blast it, I could have gotten my done for free. (Ooh, I can post a pic of what she did to my hair Friday.) Also, I spied what I think are the BM gifts which is jewelry (didn't actually see it, just the identical boxes that came from Claire's) when she was showing me some wedding stuff in her old room. That doesn't surprise me, I totally expected her to get us jewelry. No biggie.
Wow this turned into a long post. I'll shush for now...but be back with pictures.

Oh, another question. Do you think it'd look goofy to have the Tiffany aqua blue color and purple for the colors?
I ask b/c I saw this cake...

and thought it would be absolutely adorable. (Her e-ring and band came from Tiffany's. Her FH bought it there during the brief time they lived in NY.) So I thought it would be kind of cool to incorporate that in with the shower.

OR...would it seem like I was trying to be snooty? If it's a bad idea be honest, I won't be hurt.

I love Tiffanys, and I buy from them a lot. Especially baby gifts like their piggy banks. The blue box shoots my heart-rate up a bit so I say go for it.

I think it was nice of the MOB to do the labels for you. I don't know about you, but my printer sucks when it comes to making them and I would have been grateful, lol. Bet you Margie would have been too. We both had issues with invites and labels for our weddings.

Oh, I am grateful...although my printer does fine with labels and envelopes. It was very nice of her to do that for me, although I'll have to make a few more anyhow b/c there a few address that got left off. S'all good tho.

Yeah, I saw the Tiffany cake on the site that Serendipity posted and I just thought it would be perfect.

I think I've decided to go with a kind of Tiffany theme and use the robin egg blue and lilac for the colors.

My trouble is that I'm having trouble finding invitations that are affordable and that aren't too fancy. I'm thinking I may just have to go get some cardstock and make them myself that way, which is no biggie but if that's the case I gotta get crackin! Lol. Any suggestions?

I'm also trying to find a template for gift bingo. Would any of you ladies happen to have one?

Another question...do any of you know where I could find suckers like the ones posted? I can buy those, but they are $8.00/dozen and that adds up pretty quick.

Boy oy boy is this gonna sneak up on me.

I love it! Would you mind terribly if I copy it?

Thank you about the candles. The picture I posted was while they were in progress but I have the main candle done now. I need to finish up the tapers and it'll be good to go!

I would be honored if you copied it. i take that as a compliment. it is kinda funny actually, i loved the cake when i first saw it and then when we picked it up we laughed all the way home over how so (unlike and untraditional) it was. but it was the hit of the reception. everyone loved it.

please post a pic of the candles. i would love to see them finished.

Renee, are you making the cake yourself for the shower? Or are you having someone make it?

A girl I work with makes cakes so she's going to do it. Otherwise, I would make it myself.

I'm excited to see how it turns out...I'm sure everyone will be surprised that it's angel food cake.

you can make the suckers yourself...they have the molds and supplies at hobby lobby or michaels and would be really inexpensive....since you're so crafty and all

That's a really cute cake, and I hate to be obnoxious, but could you shrink the picture at all? It's so large that it stretches the screen out, so you have to scroll back and forth to read posts or get to the "quote" link.
