scratching chin Can You grow Gerbera's Daisies in Late Sept?

Soooooooooo, Possible change of mind...

I'm having a hell ofa time trying to find Gerbera's in the fall colors I want! I can order them off the new (Thanks to MarksBride, Cause she rocks) But I would have to American $$$, Plus shipping, Also I'm the kind of person that wants to see and feel exactly what I'm getting....

Anywho, Now what I got onto thinking was Maaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyybe, I could talk to a nursery here and see if possibly someone can grown them for me for the wedding? We could have them in little brown pots and write something on them?

I just don't know if there is a time frame as to when you can grow gerbera's or if you can grow year 'round provided you have the right equipment...?

Am I off my rocker? I want to be realistic!

Any suggestion or ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

Oh yes, I also think growing would be cheaper, Right now my vases I have bought are $10.00 a piece and then roughly $1.50 per gerbera x3 in eahc vase.

...

Ugh, I'm m lost!

I'm wondering if you could grow them in the house? Set aside a specific area and buy a uv light (I think that's what it is, I saw them the other day at Home Depot) and with the right temp, light and moisture, I don't see why that wouldn't work. How many are you needing?

I just did some searching, looks like Gerberas are finicky, but you can grow them annually, and in your house if you wanted to. But some people I saw post on like...ivillage gardening or something seemed like they're tried several times to grow them with no luck! So asking a nursery to do it for you might be more expensive but possibly well worth it!

I personally don't think I would risk it. I know you want to save a bunch of money, but you'd have to get a pretty complex set up to get them to grow for what you need and seeds for specialty flowers aren't really that cheap...plus with the germination rate and the space.....too scary for me...but if you are willing to risk it...

Will costco ship to Canada??

I found this...gerbera daisies

I HIGHLY discourage you from tying to grow them yourself. Even the hartiest of plants don't look "well" after being kept inside all winter, so I doubt growing them inside in Spet would work well for a novice.

You should talk to a local nursery and find out what they think and how much it would cost. I think one little daisy plant in one of those cheap plastic (terracotta-look-a-like) pots with a ribbon tied around it would be really cute. And I can't imagine they would be more than $10 (US) each! Potted Gerbera's at Home Depot (in plain pots, during peak growing season) are only like $3 or $4 (US)... but really the only ones who can tell you are your local nursury/greenhouse.

BTW - this is what I'm planning on doing, two potted plants in a "peanut" basket. Though not with Gerberas. I'm also getting married in June, so my flower options are MUCH broader then yours...

I wouldn't risk it. You could call around and ask a nursery or your local extension service though. A lot will depend on your zone too.

Jayme I honestly wouldnt try. What after all that work and time you dont end up with enough. I say get someone to start saving their Michaels coupons. If you want I will go to Michaels and buy them and ship them to you. Because I know you can get them for 50% off.

Thanks for all ur advice.

Thanks Leslee for offering up michael's! I appreciate it!

I found potted Gerbera's at the same place I'm having our bouquets done. YAY She gave me TONS of diffrent Ideas. everything is sooooooo much cheaper then having silk and making them ourselves.

I also think, If I had tried to grow them myself I would have killed each and everyone of them!!!LOL

They're $7-9 for a 4" pot! I thought that was pretty good!!!
