Default timeline for buying dresses

So when did you ladies all buy your dresses? How far in advance? We are getting married August 11, 2006. Im not looking for anything real exotic or anything. I have my eye on a gorgeous yet plain dress (no beading or anything) strapless red and white, and have an appt for my mom, my MOH and I to go to the bridal shop on DEC 31st. Im hoping i will love it on as much as i love the pic. A girlfriend of mine said about 6-8 months before the wedding should be good. Im planning on taking my BM's sometime in Janurary for their dresses. Does that seem like a good timeline?

When u go in on Dec 31st just ask them how long there ordering takes. You don't want them to early but you don't want them to late. Most places like 6 weeks. The reason i say u don't want them early is you never know when one is going to gain or lose 10 lbs. Then you don't know if one is going to back out.

Lj makes a good point, you want to make sure you get a dress that will fit you when your wedding rolls around. The stuff that I read recommends a timeline of 4-6 months ahead.

Not really sure. I got married 2.5 months after I got engaged. They said I could order my dress but there was a slim chance it might not be in yet since it was the end of the wedding rush.

I got married in August. I ordered my dress in March. I was told 12-16 weeks as the dress are only made AFTER they are ordered. My dress came in June.

It sounds good to me, I'd rather have my dress ready early than be panicking because I was cutting it too close to the wedding date. I just bought my BM's dress (5months before) but she's been the same size for years so I don't think it'll be an issue... My mum bought my dress months ago, (I think it was Aug.) because it was an excellent deal. Mum's a dressmaker so she's doing all the fittings. The only ones I'm putting off until closer to the wedding date are my two FGirls' dresses, they'll probably grow out of them if we make them too early.

Even if you're not going to order your dress right away I think it'd be a great idea to go try some on!
