Memory Boards
Materials
•16 x 20 Artists Canvas (but you can use any size you’d like)
•½ yard of fabric (this will cover a 16 x 20 canvas with some room to spare)
•Polyester batting
•Ribbon
•Novelty buttons or decorations for cross points
•Thread
•Needle
•Staple Gun
Instructions
*Cut two pieces of batting into a 16 x 20 (or the size of your canvas). Stack the two pieces on the canvas. Arrange your fabric on top of the batting. Carefully flip over the canvas.
*Staple the fabric to the back using the staple gun. (You can also use hot glue to help hold your fabric in place while you staple if you wish.) Staple all four sides in the center. Then, staple every inch or so pulling the fabric taut while stapling. For the corners, fold fabric like you would a present to create a nice corner. Trim any excess fabric.
*Begin attaching ribbon by stapling to a corner on the back. Bring it around the front to create a diagonal line. Then staple the ribbon to the opposite corner. Do the same with your next piece, creating a large X on the front of the board. After this, continue attaching ribbon to create smaller x’s until you have as many as you like. I created mine with 3 ribbons going each way (6 pieces of ribbon total), and it seemed to work well. (One of them had four going each way, and it left smaller spaces to stick items into.)
*Next, you will need the needle and thread. At the cross points of the ribbon, you will want to “sandwich” the layers together. If you are using a novelty button, you would sew the button onto the points. If you are gluing decorations on instead, sew it like you would if you were sewing a button onto it. Be sure to pull the thread firmly! If the thread is loose there will not be any tension in the ribbon to hold items in. When you are finished with each intersection, make sure to tie your ends tightly on the backside of the canvas. If gluing your decorations, now you can add them.
*Now it’s time to take a step back and admire your handiwork! And to give your hand a break from all that sewing. Next, you may add a ribbon or other material to hang the board by if you wish, but it’s not required. You can use the same ribbon as you did on the board, or you can go with something like picture wire. Just use the staple gun to place accordingly.
**I made each one of my bridesmaids a board as their gift. They all loved them, and most had been wanting one and were pleasantly surprised. I made them all different as well to match their personalities.
