Professional make-up questions
Hi Rebecca! Welcome!
I'm getting my make-up done at a spa/salon where I'm also getting my hair done. I've never gotten my make-up done professionally. What should I expect? I know I will have a consultation at the same time I have my hair trial run. What generally happens during that?
And if they put lip color on me, how will I keep it on all day? Should I buy my own lip color? Do they expect me to buy the products they use on me?
Wow, I had more questions than I thought! Thanks!

Hello!
You should expect the makeup artist to apply what feels like more makeup than you would wear on any given day. This is normal, as you need a bit more makeup than normal to show up properly in pictures. Makeup artists that have actually worked in film, television, commerical, etc. will know to apply a sealer to the face (looks and feels like evian water mist, but actually dries to a waterproof and sweatproof finish) and a separate sealer for eyeliner, mascara and lipstick. If your makeup artist does not apply these things, you should consider purchasing your powder, lipstick and lipgloss to re-apply during the reception. ( I would purchase your lipstick and lipgloss in any case because the minute you lips touch any thing oil based like salad dressing, it will cause the sealer and the products underneath to break down and you will have to re-apply)
The makeup artists are not thier to sell you product (unless they work for a counter or are given comission from the salon) and if you are to buy any products, this should have been mentioned prior to booking the trial. You should only be paying for the service, anything you purchase extra will be on your own discretion.
Also, don't be afraid to tell your makeup artist if you do not like certain colors or the way something looks from your vantage point. Makeup artists are trained to adapt thier skills to a variety of looks. They want you to be happy so everyone will be relaxed the day of.
I hope my insight has helped you to have an idea of what to expect at your preview. If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to post!

Just to add, I had my makeup done where my hair was done as well. They let me know that they wanted me to have my own mascara and lipstick. For the lipstick, I just used what I already had, because I love it, it's a good color, and it is long lasting (I bought it--well, not that exact tube--after a consultation with a counter several years ago). For the mascara, she told me what she wanted me to get--a waterproof brown-black, and suggested a drugstore brand that wasn't expensive.
She used that mineral-based makeup (several women here use it), and explained that you should NOT touch that up with regular powder. She gave me some blotting papers.
I never wear more than a bit of concealer as needed, loose powder, and lipstick, adding a swipe of eye color and/or mascara for special occasions, so this was more than I was used to, but it looked great--quite natural, and made a big difference in my photos.
