Default Just speculating...

Ok, so honestly, I'm bored and my mind started to wander, lol. I have seen numerous ads for the Calla Cut diamond...and I like.

Here's a link to the set I want..maybe to use for 5 year anniversary?
http://www.callacut.com/viewitem.asp...9999&curPage=2

Now...I had a thought. I have a ruby ring passed down from my grandmother that needs a new setting anyways. (I'll add a picture momentarily.)

What do you think the chances are that I could get it cut into the calla shape for the main ring? The only store that carries this particular cut (according to the ad) is a chain store (but it's pretty popular). I have no idea if they even do custom jewelry...but just thought I'd see what you ladies thought.

Because the diamonds are white in the picture, it is hard to get an idea of the exact shape of the "calla cut"...at least on my computer. What does it look like? A curved teardrop?

As far as getting the ruby custom-cut....I'm sure you could find someone that could do it, it just depends how much money you want to spend on it. Also, you might want to ask how much stone they would end up cutting away (wasting) in order to get it to that calla cut...it may not be worth it.

It is always fun to dream though!

It's kind of like a curved teardrop...I don't think there's a drawing on the site other than the entrance do-thingy....

And yeah, I don't want to loose too much of the ruby with it being cut. I know some of it will be lost due to dust, etc. Even if I don't get this particluar ring done, I will have the ruby cut down into something else...it's huge and I'm not all the comfortable wearing it. I feel like I'm screaming "look at this rock on my hand" when I do wear it.

You'll need to talk to a jeweler; they can tell you what cuts the stone can take. There may be invisible flaws that make the calla cut impossible for that stone, or some other reasons. I did a very basic report on gemstone cutting once in school, and basically raw stones are cut to the ideal cut for the stone, based on a bunch of factors. You'll almost certainly be able to get it cut down, but the actual cuts may be limited.

True enough. But I'd still like to have that set, lol. Will have to see if I can't make it up to a store one night this week to ask them about it.

I also need to get it appraised...but I'll be terribly heartbroken if I come to find out it's not real. My grandma would be too.

Are the colors on your picture true to the actual ring? On my monitor, it seems to be awfully orange.

I would get a formal appraisal of the ring. It looks to be a nice size, and if it is a good quality ruby, worth a lot of money. You will probably want to get an insurance clause to cover the loss of theft if it is worth more than $1000.

That said, it is easy to reset a stone, but very difficult to recut a stone. To make it balance, they have to cut is from both sides, and then the top and bottom, and what is left is tiny. And with an antique stone, it is even more difficult. I only know because I had the same question, interestingly enough about a ruby also.

But the first step is the appraisal.

The color is a bit off in the picture. It's a pretty deep red for a ruby...which is why I like it so much, lol. Not so much a fan of the lighter (pink-ish) rubies.

So I'm guessing that I should forget about cutting it and just look for a new setting to put it in? I almost want to say it's a baguette cut.

I will look into getting it appraised this week...but I hate leaving my jewelry. Especially with my good pieces from my grandmother...plus, she told me a story once where she had taken in several things to be appraised, and then years later had it done again only to find the previous person had switched out the stone for a fake one. So that makes me a bit paranoid.

DO you have to have it made into a ring what if it was set into a necklace? Or do you absolutely want it for a 5 year anniv set?

I was thinking resetting it into a necklace might work as well, if you can't get it recut. As a pendant, the larger stone would be lovely.

I guess I'm just so used to seeing it as a ring (I got it when I was 16) that it never occured to me to make it into a necklace! That's a good idea though, and you're right, it won't look as large that way.

I think if I have time this week I'm going to go up to Shane Company and talk to them...I hate their commercials, but everyone I know says they have excellent service and quality.
