White Gold
To those of you who have white gold rings...
I know that from time to time you have to have them re-plated (I can't think of the technical term). I'm curious as to what time frame this usually is.
I noticed today that my band is showing gold already. It's been 7 months. I think this is too early to have to have it re-done already. My e-ring has one tiny spot of gold showing through, but nothing like my band. Maybe b/c the band is thinner in back?
Anyhow, I was just curious. I don't use any chemicals, and I take them off when dealing with soap.
So how often should I need to get my rings plated?

I would be taking it into the jewlers and asking. I have never heard of white gold flaking off. unless it is silver plate.

Are you talking about rhodium plating? I have white gold rings and I think that is what it was called.....my rings tend to get worse in the back and show more wear than the front of my rings. I've had my engagement ring for almost 2 years, and I've only had it replated once....I've had my wedding ring for less than a year, and I got it plated once right after we got it, to make it look nice and fresh.
We bought lifetime warranties on all of our rings, so all of that was free for us.

Yeah, rhodium plating...that's what I meant. I didn't make it to the jewelry store yesterday, I might head over there in a bit though. I am not really upset, because I knew that I'd have to have it done eventually. I just think it's too soon at this point.
I just had them cleaned last weekend too, which is probably why I noticed this week, lol.
And I'm guessing it takes a week or two to get your rings back? I must find another ring to wear or I'll go bonkers.

Whenever I've gotten my rings done, its only taken about 5 minutes....I just wait at the jewelry store for them to finish.

Really?!? Hrm...ok, will go check this out. I think hubby is going to lay back down anyways, so it'll be a good time for me to go.
Me in a jewelry store....always dangerous, lol. Better make sure I leave the store card here...

I know about being in the jewelry store....last time we were in to get our rings cleaned, I found a pink sapphire ring and earring set that I love...and got them for Christmas and Valentine's day.

I seem to remember someone complaining about this on another board. They brought the ring back the jeweller and the jeweller just polished it with a soft cloth. Apparently .... mild soaps etc. will clean your diamond but not white gold. To remove the "yellow gold look" in between platings, she suggested having it polished.
Perhaps this is something you can do yourself?

Seredipity...I have no idea. But I'll look into that.
I did find out though that to get it re-plated (this is just my band) it would be $60. But if I buy the protection plan (which is only $15) it covers it as many times as needed for two years. So, that would be the way to go.
However, could be up to two weeks before I get it back. I don't like that at all. One, I don't want to be without my ring that long. Two, I am extremely distrusting of any time my real jewelry is not in my possession. I'm paranoid about them doing something to it or switching my stones for fake ones.
Maroki, I didn't even let myself look at anything else, lol. I have a thing for bling...decided it was best not to give in to temptation.

Wanted to add I am the same way about being apart from my jewelry for any length of time...I just feel so anxious about it!

My jeweler said that the rhodium wears off differently for each person. Depending on the chemical make-up of your skin?? I need mine re-rhodiumed about every 6 months. I was really lucky to have gotten a ring from a place that offers it free as much as you need it. We did not even have to pay extra for that. My step-dad was a jeweler for awhile and he said we should get our rings from a place that offers free coatings and free lifetime warranty. So we did and I am happy that we did. 15$ for that warranty is a great price though. I would definitely buy it!!

Yeah, the lady at the store told me the same thing about it wearing differently on each person. My e-ring has a lifetime warranty on it, so I'm not too worried about it. I'd just like to be able to take them both to the same place, but if I can't I will definitely be buying the plan on the wedding band.

I went to my jeweller yesterday because my e-ring had a yellow sheen. I mentioned how I've heard that white gold is rhodium plated and will turn yellow over time unless replated. Well, guess what! My ring is NOT rhodium plated, and was turning yellow because of the oils on my skin. He grabbed a soft cotton jewellers cloth, polished my ring and VOILA!!!! Yellow was gone, back to the way it looked the day FH proposed. I'm so happy!
He told me that I just need to polish the gold once in a while (I've cleaned it with a brush and sunlight, but this only cleans the diamond; the gold requires polishing with a cloth). Hopefully this helps for some of you girls out there - although he did say that chain stores use rhodum plated gold... I'ld look into it anyway!

Eventually(after years or maybe sooner white gold will look a little warmer in color, not as white as it first was when you got it. Especially if you ring is 18k white gold (more pure yellow gold in it) It will never turn as yellow and a yellow gold ring but it will not always stay that crisp white color.

all white gold is NOT rhodium plated. Either nickel, or in my case, palladium, is added to yellow gold to make it white, albeit with a very slight yellow sheen. Most jewellers electroplate a thin layer of rhodium OVER the gold to make it uber-white. This layer wears off over time and needs to be replated. My jeweller deosn't do this for various reasons, so as long as I polish my ring it will not turn any more yellow than it is right now - and its pretty darn white!

My warrenty on my gold does not cover rhodium plating which is like the dumbest thing because it needs to be done all the time and the warrenty was 150 bucks for 3 years
