Default Gift Ideas?

One of my good friends from college is getting married in May. I just got the "unofficial" invite to her bridal shower, which her FMIL is throwing for her (they all live around here, as does my friend - though her family is in Masssachusetts)

The B&G are registered at BBB and Macy's, but not for much - mainly sheets and towels and a few random kitchen items (lierally like 1 bowl and 3 fry pans). Since the shower is mainly FMIL's friends who don't know her, I figure they will probably take care of all that boring stuff on her registry.

So, I really want to get her something interesting, but useful. Any ideas? They own a house and most of their furniture is from Ikea. They have a nice kitchen and both like to cook, but it is small. I was trying to think of something unique for the kitchen that they didn't register for, don't already have, would use and that wouldn't take up too much space. The problem is I DO NOT cook, and therefore an unfamiliar with any nifty kitchen gadgets out there

I know there are lots of kitchen guru's out there! HELP!

How about one of those jars with the different spoons/spatula and other kitchen utilities in it? I think it comes with a wisk and some wooden spoons, can opener etc. I mean they probably have that stuff, but maybe not a complete matching set

Plants for the garden

Memory Box with engraved plate (bombay company has really nice ones)

I just bought my brother and his FI a wood sign to hang in their walkway (ouside)

I left it at my mom's so I can't post a picture.

The top piece of word I had their new last name i.e. "THE SMITHS" and then smaller under it "Est. 2007"

then hanging from that is a piece of word carved into a double heart. I had their 1st names carved into it.

DH and I will get one of these for ourselves soon. My parents have one from their wedding so it's really sentimental for brother and Fi... they too have everything and little on their registries.

Good luck!!!

Since they love to cook - perfect gift suggestion - because it was for me.

Get them a really nice spice rack. You can find them at Bed, Bath & Beyond, they come labeled and with spices already in the jars. Mind is two-tiered and spins. I absolutely love it. You can replace the spices with the cheap kind from the grocery store once you run out too.

Here's a link to the exact one that I have:

A really good set of kitchen knives is really useful too. I love the ones I got for our wedding gift...

Or you could do gift voucher for some fancy cullinary shop near them where the could get some really nice ingredient for fancy meals... Maybe do seperate sets of voucher, one for their first weekend home, thier first month's anniversary, 6 month etc...

I always loved the boxed candle idea. I don't think I have it on my pc anymore but it was a cute idea if your on a budget.. I'm suomeone will remember where I posted it, it came with a poem, different coloured pairs of candles & their purposes & you'd give them candle holders to burn them in...

ETA: This is where I posted it ages ago...

What else

I would have liked a home gathered picnic set. (I'm a big fan of country picnics ) Cute box & blanket, wine glasses & pretty crockery... I'm not keen on the prepacked ones, but you can buy so many cute individual pates & glasses that you could make a beutiful picnic set

You could make a recipe book of all your favorite recipes. My aunt made one for all of the grandchildren in the family of the family recipes. I love having it knowing that my great-grandma made some of the things for my grandma when she was a girl.

How about a reciepe box that comes with the reciepe cards. Fill out a few prior to the shower and if you are in contact with any of her family or other friends maybe you could ask them to bring along a favorite reciepe of their's so they could jot it down at the shower on one of the cards. I think it is personal and when they use any of the reciepes from the box it keeps family and freinds in mind.

I like the idea above me. You might try to get in touch with her mom and see what her favorite meals were growing up. If you're comfortable with her FMIL you could do the same to find out what her FI liked growing up too.

I LOVE this idea - there are 3 of us that actually go to a lot of outdoor concerts & festivals together, so a picnic basket would be PERFECT! I know a store that sells the "fancy" ones pretty cheap, but I got mine at Big Lots We also drink a good bit of wine toegether, so maybe one of those wine kits would be a good gift as well.

Maybe I'll talk to our 3rd friend and see what she's doing and if she wants to go in with me on something nice, as well.

I like the recipe idea as well - except I don't really have many recipes (since I don't cook), and her taste in food is much different than mine. I'd probably be better off getting her a cookbook - which I guess could go with the picnic theme.

Thanks for the ideas everyone!

I would probably go with a cookbook, a bottle of wine, and a gift certificate for a gourmet food/cooking store (e.g., Williams and Sonoma, if they have one in their area).

Perhaps you could take a recipe box and blank recipe cards clipped to envelopes pre-addressed to the bride. Pass out the cards/envelopes to the guests and have them mail the completed recipes to the bride for inclusion in the recipe box/book.

For your part, in addition to creating the scrapbook style recipe book, you can google and get a lot of recipes designed for tail-gating parties or picnics, since you both like the picnicing.

I love my mini cuisinart ..... it's not nearly as bulky or expensive as the big one but it's just as handy for most everything that I am doing.
