We've already booked our room on Carnival for our honeymoon. It's a brand new ship called the Liberty, which is still being built in Italy. Neither one of us have ever been on a cruise before. So I'm not only excited by the cruise, but a new ship makes me all warm inside.

Our trip is a western Caribbean trip it goes to the Bahamas, the Caymans and Cozumel. What are some not-to-be-missed attractions we must see at any of the locations? We pretty much will try anything, except "Xtreme" sports and stuff. Out of all the destinations, I was in Cozumel I guess, because I've done Tulum and Xelha. Tulum was really nice. It was a senior trip so I don't remember much other than the ruins and a Fat Tuesday t-shirt contest ..and a bad case of the trots.

So, ahem, yes - what are some must-sees?

I don't have any destination ides - but I have on-board suggestions! Carnival puts out a daily bulletin of things going on on the ship. Read it! We missed so much fun stuff last time because we didn't really pay attention to it, mostly because we kept getting up so late because we never knew what time it was (no window or porthole or clock to tell us it was MORNING.) We still had fun anyway, just kind of wandering, but we could have done a lot more while we were on the ship.

I have no advice for you on those places but i just wanted to say that i would LOVE to go on a cruise and visit all those exotic places, i envy you and your FH, make sure when you get back you let us all know how it was and post some GREAT pictures!!

You know what i am so blind i didn't even see that you had wrote you were going to Cozumel, my FH's mother and step-father have gone there for their vacation for the past 5 yrs, all i know is YES DO NOT DRINK THE WATER (he also got the poopies really bad!!!) i know that his mum just lays out on the beach and reads, she does like to visit the little market places, and his step-father goes scuba diving ALL the time, they said there was a very secluded private beach that they found on the island that they went to and it was beautiful (they brought back lots of pictures) The wildlife is amazing, the birds are the brightest colors!!! i'll have to ask them some more about it and if they recommend any places!

Thank you swim!! I will definitely post pictures. I'm more excited about the cruise than our wedding. How sad is that? LOL

Yeah, I didn't drink the water. Perhaps I accidently had ice in my drink or had salad where the veggies were washed in their water. Dear Lord, one minute I was on the stage dancing with my girlies and the next I was hauling ass to the hotel to reinact the Dumb and Dumber bathroom scene.

bebe- that's a great suggestion. I know we have 2 full days on the ship itself so I'm glad you mentioned that. Our room will have no windows either. LOL I typed winders instead of windows at first.

Cru5h, Cozumel is different from Xelha and Tulum, as it's an island. It's in the same general area but isn't the same place.

In Cozumel:
-Go to Passion Island
-If you're in the market for jewelry, go to Diamonds International. Ask for Roi (Roy). He's one of the managers. Tell him Kevin Thomas sent you. He'll give you a nice deal. If he develops a case of amnesia, tell him I'm the guy who bought the engagement ring from him and proposed to my girlfriend (my wife now) across the street from his store, on the beach. He'll remember me for sure. A couple of weeks ago, I sent my friend to him. My friend bought some diamond earrings for his wife and was extremely happy with the deal he gave him.

I wasn't very impressed with the Cayman Islands. It was too slow for me. All we did was hit the beach and did some shopping. It's excellent if you want to set up an untraceable bank account -- I'm joking!

Congratulations and have fun!

Just a word of advice - rent one of the cars (vw bugs/jeeps) in Cozumel rather than taking a taxi..... Taxi will cost $3 to go somewhere, but $20 plus to get back. The car rental is only like $10 to $15 for the day, if I remember correctly. It's been awhile.

They do parasailing at San Franscisco Beach (I believe thats the name, don't quote me on that ) - that's the only extreme thing we found in Cozumel.... Well, he did it, I just sat in the boat calling him crazy...

The Caymans are kinda slow, but we went and fed the stingrays. That was kind of cool... I'd say if you decide to do that, go early in the morning so you'll be the first ones out on the sandbar. It's like the black sea coming at you when they come up to the boat for feeding. I didn't physically feed them, it wasn't naturally my cup of tea... I like to say I went, I saw, I conquered, and then swam like hell to get out of the water... There's nothing like a 5 foot wide "fish" ramming itself into the back of your legs knocking you over.... So yeah, I got back on the boat. lol

That's all I can remember... when on the ship though, for those 2 days.... get yourself a couples massage... those things are GREAT!!!!

Have fun!

Susan

We just took a cruise for our honeymoon and Cozumel was one of the stops. We did the excursion to Tulum and I agree it was awesome but I'm a Spanish teacher . We talked to other people on our cruise ship (also Carnival) about their excursions and a lot of people went on the party boat and had a good time. It's basically a boat ride with a lot of free alcohol. So if you're into drinking that might be a good option. You can check online and see what excursions are available. That's what we did. I always wanted to see Mayan ruins so that's why we chose ours.

You are going to have such a great time! I didn't think I would like a cruise but now I would love to go again. The port Carnival stops at is so awesome. You can get cool souveniers and jewelry. Mexico has great silver jewelry at good prices if you like that. I would love to go back and have more time to shop. Our excursion to Tulum took up most of our time in port.

I don't know if you will need to rent a car. I think that depends on how long you are there but we were there for less than a day. If you take the excursions, the cruise ship arranges the transportation (included in the fee). Also, before you get off the boat in Mexico Carnival sells huge bottles of water. Buy it! We did and we didn't have any stomach trouble.

True, if booking an excursion thru the cruise line, they provide transportation. My suggestion was if they wanted to explore on their own.... I should have clarified that in my post. Oops.... sorry.

Everyone - thank you!! couples massage is soooo right up our alley, especially him with his messed up mechanic's back. Shopping is, of course, high on my agenda.

Tulum was beautiful. I would love to someday visit the other side of Mexico and see the other Mayan ruins too. I did the "booze cruise" when we went to Cancun/Cozumel. Surprisingly I was the only sober one. No wonder I thought it sucked LOL. Nothing like watching your classmates vomit on the beach. WOOHOO!! LOL We may take off on our own and renting a car was a great tip. I remember the drivers in Cancun and man, they can't drive at all. But I'm from south FL, so I'm very used to that

We were going to do Royal Caribbean's western caribbean cruise, but it included Key West instead of the Caymans. I live too close to pay to visit that place.

I heard the Caymans are expensive as hell. Exaggeration? I forgot to mention we love to eat. Carnivalers - how's the food on the ship? Anyone - recommeded places to eat at any of the stops?

Thanks for all of your responses. I'm more amped than ever now!

cru5h - the food on our Carnival cruise was EXCELLENT! And when I couldn't decide which dessert to pick, they brought me two different ones. (Chocolate souffle and raspberry creme brulee - amazing!) Did I mention I gained 6 pounds on our trip? This was a 7-day trip mind you - so that's almost a pound a day. They actually do have "Spa Fare" on every menu if you want a lighter/healthier selection, and the couple of times I tried it, it was just as good as the other stuff.

I am going on a Carnival cruise too! Watch out though, I read somewhere that if you do the excursions that are not advertised by Carnival, and you are running late to get back to the ship, they leave you. But if you go on one of their excursions, they will wait on you. The LAST thing I want is to be stranded in Mexico!!!

I've cruised about 8 times on Carnival, and we loved it. The last time we were with two other couples, who never wanted to sign up for any of the excursions until the last minute. Well, if you wait til the last minute, a lot are filled.

On the ship, get a massage, go to the shows, lie out by the pool, its all good. On Grand Cayman- the time changes by one hour, so its an hour earlier than you would expect. If you take the earliest excursion out to feed the Sting-rays, then when you get back into the main city, stores aren't necessarily open. Feeding the stingrays is actually a lot of fun. A boat takes you and 40 of your nearest and dearest friends out to a sand bar. You get in the water and WHOOMP dozens and dozens of sting rays are swimming up to you. Their feeding tube if flat on the stomach, so you hold a piece of fish flat on your hand and they glide over it and suck it up. It is a really unique experience. The water is only about 4 feet deep, and the boat has masks, snorkels and life vests if you want them. Back in town, there is a place called ShipWreck Reef- about 1/2 mile our on the main road whee there are several shipwrecks about 200 yards off the beach. You can easily float out there and snorkle and the most beautiful, multicolored fish (and some groupers) are feeding. You can take a can of CheeseWhiz and squirt it into their mouths. You can also buy long plastic tubes of dog kibble and feed them. The beach is beautiful, with drink stands and stuff. In town, there is a lovely shopping area. Check out the store with the black coral jewelry. The REAL store, the designed is world known- he made a dinner wear set for Di and Charles. Also there is a little town called Hell. (Reason for the name differes with the tour guide) but it is an area of bitumous black rock. Also visit the turtle farm and rescue place, and...drumroll... all the rum factories, with the free samples of rum, rumcake, rum cookies, rum candy.
In Cozumel, unless you are going for the drunk teenager stuff, there is a wonderful resturant at the end of the strip called I think, Carlo's Backyard. It is behind a store which is an artist's gallery, and is indeed in a backyard, although it is a beautiful gardened yard. Food is excellent, all water including ice cubes are bottled and filtered. Veggies are washed with bottled filtered water. Great stuff.
