Question on M&M's
Do M&M's go bad?
We want to put Malted Milk Balls and M&M's in bowls on the tables at the reception and I would like specific colors for the M&M's.
I was price shopping and I found that the store that sells them by the color here is considerably more money than the official website. That is also when I discovered that the official website has free shipping for the holidays right now. It would be great to buy a bunch now but I also don't want to serve my guests stale or old M&M's.
By the way, if anyone else is looking for specific colors of M&M's, it's a good deal right now ( http://us.mms.com/us/)

The do get kind of stale...but if you keep them sealed and it isn't *too* long, I think they'll be all right. I'm pretty sure I've eaten M&M's months after Halloween and they've still been yummy.

When is your wedding? I think they'll be fine if you keep them sealed VERY tightly and in the freezer.

This is why we need tickers! Ok, not knowing ho long until your wedding... I would say 6 months to MAYBE 8 would be ok. I wouldn't buy them yet if it's closer to a year or more. But, I really don't know. Just that you know how when the weather changes and chocolate melts and then it gets cold again, etc.? It just couldn't be good to keep them over a couple of different seasons. They might crack or get discolored or something. I would *try* to wait until it's closer if you could.

The wedding is May 27 so it's just over 5 months away. I was thinking if I kept them in the bags they come in and maybe even put them in another sealed bag, that would help with the air and anything getting to them. I just don't want them to get melty but would a freezer be good? Would they thaw right? It's a good deal to save on shipping but now I don't know if it's worth it or not.

I think the M&Ms will be OK if you keep them sealed tightly. Don't refrigerate them. They'll sweat all over each other in thawing and lose their colors. Malted milk balls definitely go stale. They get chewy and gross. If you can hold out on purchasing them until much closer you should. I am a candy connoisseur *showing rotten teeth*

I have to wait on the malted milk balls. Those would never last until the wedding. They would be eaten and we'd have to order more anyway. It's just the M&M's with the good deal that I was considering purchasing early.

How many bags of M&Ms were you planning on buying? If you were only going to purchase a couple 8 oz. bags, then shipping wouldn't actually be that much. I just wonder if that money is worth it to save if the M&Ms turn out to be stale by the time of the wedding. And, if you bought them now, I would worry about checking to see if they are stale. I wouldn't wait until right before the wedding to open the bags in case they were stale...but once you open the bags they do get stale. Aigh. I don't know.

I found two bags of the red and green M&Ms from last Christmas in my pantry. They tasted just fine to me!! Ate some of them and made Tollhouse cookies using the rest of them with 1/4 miniature chocolate chips.
And I actually like malted milk balls when they get a little big gooey in the middle.

I think as long as you keep them sealed they will be OK. I DO NOT recommend putting them in the freezer cause the outside gets wet and the colors rub off on each other. My mom puts them in the freezer and it makes such a mess!

Is it just me or does anyone get sticker shock when shopping for wedding favors?
Especially when looking for candy!

Just another thought-- anybody remember the actuarian in "Along Came Polly?" The guy with all the insurance statistics-- said that 75% of the people don't wash their hands after using the restroom-- then reach for the bar nuts/chips with those hands...
Makes me think about open bowls of M&Ms and malted milk balls...uh, not so sure I like chocolate anymore..

DO NOT FREEZE CHOCOLATE - EVER. I learned this from a chocolatier from where I buy homemade chocolates. He said that when chocolate freezes, all of the moisture is drawn to the surface. When you defrost it, you end up with very dry chocolate, with that whiteish look to it. Not good.
Keep them sealed, in a cool, dry place.

How many M & M's
We bought the little organza bags that are 4x6. We are going to buy m&m's to put in them. What I am wondering, is how many to buy - does anyone know how many M & M's I need to fill about 150 of them???

Since this post is two years old, you may want to start your own so that others reply.
Thanks and welcome to Pash!
