Default Making our own cake - help with decor?

We've decided to forego the traditional tiered wedding cake in favor of our favorite regular-sized cakes (carrot, cheesecake and banana cream pie -- don't laugh!). Three generations of women in our family will make these, and we'll save about $750 on our budget. The caterers will cut and plate the cakes for guests and bring them out after we cut our "main" cake.

Here's our dilemma -- the cake we will be cutting for pictures is a two-layer carrot cake, frosted plain white, on a cake stand. I'd like to put flowers around the base of the cake stand and on top of the cake -- something that will look lovely and fresh for photos.

Can anyone recommend how to do a floral cake topper - did you try to make one? - or other flower techniques to help a modest-size cake look wedding-worthy?

I wanted a bou of flowers on top of my cake but when my baker told me how she did it I cut that out. She cuts a big hole in the middle of the cake puts a can down in the cake and uses it as a vase. I wanted as much of the top layer as I could get since it was really small and it was the only flavor I liked. There was no way I was going to let her do that. Do you not want a cake topper?

i saw a picture once of a cascade of flowers from the center of the top layer going down one side, covering probably about 1/5 of the width. it looked absolutely beautiful. i'll see if i can remember where i saw it and post the pic

I made my own cake. I had the florist put these flowers on. I gave them an idea of what I wanted.

I also made my friend's cake. This is not the best. What is the front is suppose to be the back. It was hot and I had DS1 was cutting some of his first teeth while trying to frost it. The flowers on there are fake. My friend found the bouquets with lots of little rose buds heads. I just popped the heads off and put a little shimmer dust on them like you would frosting (that is what it is really made to go on.

This is their topper but you can see the flowers better. You can also see the shimmer dust.

Forgot to mention. Have you checked out wilton.com. Wilton also had caking decoarting classes at Michael's. That is where I learned. Also browse cake sites and see what you like.

If you have more ?s you can PM me if you like. I was really into cake decorating before I had my little guys.

Have you thought about using small silk flowers instead of trying to create them out of frosting? It would certainly be easier for the family members and add a splash of color.
