Passports for EVERYWHERE outside US
Everyone,
Beginning next week, everyone (including children) will need a passport to travel anywhere outside of the United States and more importantly - to get BACK into the U.S. Currently, you were able to travel to the Bahamas, Jamiaca, etc with only a U.S. issued ID like a driver's license, but not any longer. This also includes Canada.
This also includes cruises. If you're taking a cruise and you know you'll end up outside of the U.S. at any point, you'll need a passport.
Children previously were able to use only a birth certificate, but this is no longer the case.

That exclude (sp?) US Territories.... there were a big confusion with people traveling to and from PR.... if you are traveling to a US Territory you don't need a passport..... all others like Heather said yes, you DO NEED a passport.....

I was reading about this in the newspaper over the weekend. According to the article I read, they are not YET requiring you to have passports for cruises, but that will be a requirement sometime in the future.

It affects cruises. We tried to book one and AAA won't even book it until you show your passport!

That's good to know (not that I'm taking a cruise anytime soon!). According to the article, you don't yet need a passport for a cruise to Mexico, but since I don't travel outside of the country, I didn't do any extra research to verify this.

We have been following this very closely b/c ten of us are going on a cruise as part of my "Farewell to single-hood" / Bachelorette / Girls Gone Wild weekend!!
Anyhow, the link below should help out a bit. Travel by water still does not require a passport although it is recommended. (I highly recommend it - what if something happens and your cruise ship leaves you in Mexico??!!)

Thats not true. December 2005, we went on a 4 day cruise from Los Angeles to Ensenada (about 2 hours in from the border) and they required a passport to get off and on the boat, here and in mexico (when we took a tour).
Regardless of where you go, I would just take the passport just in case.

I agree about the just having a passport. It makes things a lot easier if you are traveling a lot.

I was under the impression that went into effect on January 1? That's what I was told at the passport office a few months ago...

I spoke to Carnival the other day about this because I am going on a cruise next month. Passports for cruises aren't needed until Jan 1, 2008.

What are the new passport requirements?
The U.S. Government will soon require all of our guests (including U.S. citizens) to be in possession of a valid passport when traveling on any Carnival cruise. Foreign nationals should contact their respective governments to obtain further details. This requirement may become effective as early as January 1, 2008.
AIR TRAVEL
Effective January 23, 2007, passports will be required for air travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, The Bahamas and Bermuda. This is an important new requirement for our cruise guests traveling by air to embark or debark in Vancouver for our Alaska or Hawaii cruises. In addition, this new requirement will also impact our Canadian guests that travel by air to or from any of our U.S. embarkation ports.

Just as a little heads up, If you don't already have a passport, I would recommend getting one as soon as possible. I just got my in October and they told me because of the new law there was going to be a backup getting passports back. They said that come the new year they were expecting it to take over 5-6 months to get your passport.

It sounds like some lines may be requiring passports even if actual travel requirements don't necessitate them. I agree with Shaks, just take a passport to be on the safe side.
BTW, the requirement includes infants, not just children (for some reason I don't think of babies when I hear "children" sometimes, so just clarifying. )

What if you're driving into Canada? Jerry goes there all the time with his job and he doesn't have a passport.

At this time, all that they are requiring if you travel to Canada over land (driving) is a birth certificate. There is talk of requiring passports at some point, but for now you don't have to have one.

I believe by land in January 2008. BUT, if for some odd reason he needed to fly OUT of Canada- he wouldn't be able to get back into the US. (Like if his truck broke down or something!)

Here is the link for those that would like to apply for a passport, this is just the application form, you can not submit it online.
