I tried to go in early (March maybe?) to order our flowers (for an August wedding) and she made me come back in July to place our order. She took a deposit earlier from me (since they only do so many weddings a day) but waited until much closer to the wedding for my actual order.

I would not order them to soon you might change your ind 100 times if you order them 8 months in advance. You could go ahead and start look! I would say 2 months in advance but I could be wrong.

Because the florist can't actually order the flowers that early, you don't need to make any decisions that early. However, as Maroki noted, florists can get booked up, so picking the one you want and reserving your date with a deposit could be a good idea to do sooner. You could certainly talk to them about your ideas, or ask them for suggestions, and ask them for quotes, but they still won't order the flowers so you shouldn't be locked in until 2-4 weeks before your wedding.
