I LOVE THEKNOT.COM
So, I was searching around to find some good ideas for the "fall themed wedding" cause we ALL know I need help!
And I think I know what we could do for favors...
Dave's mom makes AMAZING jam, I don't know what kind we would do, But it would a fall color and we can put a little tag on it that says
"SPREAD THE LOVE"
is that cute or what??? I bet it's relatively inexpensive too!

I love apple butter!! Yummy yummy yummy!!!
I think a combination of the few types would be best for those who don't like the one particular flavor. Plus, they would come in all types of colors to match your theme! I would see if different flavors/types would be really time consuming though and then make a decision. I think it's a great idea!
(FH and I are actually considering making strawberry preserves for our favors too)

What a cute idea. If you decide to go with one flavor, you could always buy a yard of fall theme fabric and put it under the twist part of the lid. They would look fantastic in a wicker basket with a few fall leaves!!!

Or you could screw on the lid. Put a circle of fall coloured fabric on top, then tie a ribbon around the lid with the little message tag attached to the ribbon.
If you can rope Dave's mum into helping then I think this is a fabulous idea!

I was just thinking, it would still be cute if you were using all different shaped recycled jars. My mum makes home made jam & if you look in her cupboard it's really cute seing all the different shapes & sizes...
BTW: I meant a bit like this, only in your colours...

ummmm don't mean to throw a damper and of course your wedding is small, and I have no idea what price you consider "not expensive" for favors, but have you ever made jam? You will need to buy 3 dozen jars for starters and if you use "recycled" jars, you will still need lids and rings.... they are almost as expensive as a dozen jars. Not to mention the cost of the fruit, preparing the fruit and the pectin and sugar, time....... Now you could do what my grandmother did and use wax to seal the jars instead of lids, but I don't think that is the best, the jars could tip and the wax could crack and people would have jam all over!
All that aside, if none of the above is an issue, I LOVE the idea and would love to get such a favor at a wedding! I make jam every year and generally give it out for gifts to people. It is ALWAYS a hit!

I think you could use the lids from recycled jars too, it wouldn't matter what it said on there because they'd be covered with the fabric.
Or what my grandma did was cut little circles of greaseproof paper for on the surface of the jam, then a cellophane circle over the top of the jar tied on with an elastic band. You could then cover it with the fabrice & tie with a ribbon & it'd be safe from spilliage.
Of course fruit & sugar can cost quite a bit, but it'd make lovely favours

Actually, the main thing with the lids or wax is a sanitation issue. When you make jam, you have to do a final bathat a high temp with the lids that seals them so air can't get in and cause bacterial growth. If you don't do this, the jam needs to stay refridgerated and be consumed quickly; people would have to be told not to just stick it in their pantry for a couple of months the way you can do with jam you buy from the store. And you can't be sure that the lids that come with other jars (eta: i.e., recycled jars) will do the trick. People who actually make jam at home to sell, etc., always buy new rings to ensure a safe seal.

JAM! Such a great idea! I like the idea of the "Spread The Love" on the jars, ever so cute.

my two cents:
contact your local farmers market (or farmer) or produce market. Most vine fruits (grapes, strawberries, etc) will freeze beautifully, so if you buy them while they are in season and freeze them correctly, they should be good to go for jam making in the fall.
that might help cut down the cost a little bit.
Also, never underestimate the power of Costco and Sam's club. They have good produce, too.
And if you made apple butter, you could always make the batches while the fruit is in season. Since there are no dairy products in apple butter, you wont have that wierd, grainy previously-frozen texture.
Fabulous idea, btw.

I was originally planning a fall wedding so I've got way too many cute fall ideas - but how about instead of jam (which can be time consuming to make) you do those cookie gift jars with something fallish - like a mix and recipe for apple crisp, or apple spice cookies or something along those lines? I make gift jars all the time - they aren't really that expensive and they look great. I bought thing of 12 1 qt mason jars at big lots for 6 dollars. You can probably get them at thrift stores for 50 cents. With the mixes, you don't have to worry about them being sealed as weel (with jam it could go rotten if not sealed well enough)
You could do something like this but in your colors - maybe a leaf cookie cutter instead of a spoon?
I thought this type was cute too
Or this
Its super easy to make the jars go with your theme - and as fancy (or not!) as you want them.
You can find tons of free recipes online as well.

That's a really good suggestion! I might use it instead of jelly since it sounds pretty difficult.
