Question Need Help With a Western Theme & Colors!

Hi everyone~

I'm extremelly new to not only this site, but planning a wedding in general! I've never really paid much attention to them cause I didn't 'think' I would be very interested in one...that is till I decided it was finally going to happen! lol Anyways...my fiance would prefer a western theme sort of...mainly because we want a very LAID BACK & COMFORTABLE reception party afterwards. So, we have been discussing things like Bar-B-Q & Kegs of Beer and just like a big outdoor party. But we are looking at a July 28th date so I just can't pick some colors that would match a western-like theme besides black & gold. Black is okay, I guess...but I don't like gold at all!!! And pastels are not my thing either....I'm so confused!!! Does anyone have any color tips for this time of year & this type of a theme???

Welcome to PASH! What do you think of different shades of brown? Dark brown and pink goes good.

Welcome to Pash!

I think you can make pretty much any colors work with a Western theme (except maybe pastels). I think it more depends on the dresses you pick and the decor of the reception. Are you planning on cowboy hats and the whole shebang, or just "hints" or western?

In late July (depending on where you are), you probably want to stay away from heavy dresses in dark colors, just because your bridesmaides would be too hot. If you pick a shorter, lighter dress, then you can pretty much use any color.

When I think of "western" I think of red bandanas, leather chaps, cowboy hats and blue jeans. So what do you think of reds and blues?

Well, I like blue okay, but not red at all! lol And I'm in Texas where it stays pretty dang warm all throughout September/October usually. I'm guessing it's gonna be hot & dry around the time of the wedding. And I don't plan on doing everything western...mainly just hints, like you mentioned. I haven't even thought about Bridesmaid dresses so I can't show you that either. I have NO IDEA what to do...I've never been into this kind of stuff & I just feel overwhelmed already cause I don't know how these things work!!!

Thank you for the welcome I do like those colors a lot, but I'm just afraid the different browns would be too dark for that time of year for a hot place like Texas? What do you think???

My first instinct was brown and pink. Those colors are very popular and I think they would be great for a Western theme.

And do you think browns would be okay for the summer in Texas?

I think if you used a lighter shade of brown it would be great....but I know some country boys...and I'm not sure about the pink part!!!

What about a mocha shade of brown with turquoise?!?!?!?!

Oooo... turquoise would be GREAT! with brown as an accent color. IMO, any shade of brown would be too "washed out" in Texas. I actually just found these great turquoise dresses yesterday on David's Bridal that I was thinking of using:
http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridesma...=12956&cfid=19

They are a little more casual, which sounds like your style. But they ahve a lot of other dresses in that color as well.

I love the idea of turquoise with brown. I think it could be classy and elegant if you want and relaxed and fun too.

I love those dresses. And I think either turquoise with brown or brown with turquoise would be a lovely color combination. The dresses are nice and light, a little more "fun and flirty", and I think would be great for an outdoor summer wedding in the south.

I agree, I agree . I was thinking pink to give it a little feminine touch, but the turquoise is a great color. Love it!

OMG...so many responses! LOL THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I do love those colors...all of them...I was just afraid brown would be too dark for a summer color but with all of ya'lls input and thoughts, I'm beginning to think if I use it as an accent color, it would work great! Now I've just got to choose between that awesome turquiose & pink! You are all so helpful ... I appreciate all the comments!

I was the exact same way until I found this site! I had no clue at all about where to start planning a wedding! (needless to say I got there with all the girls help ) I think 2nd time brides have a really advantage there!

I think turquoise sounds really pretty I'd possibly pair it with white or cream depending on what dress colour you go with... I'll hunt for some inspiration...

Are you into the whole country western thing? I'm thinking a country stule wedding could be really pretty! Wild flower bouquets, and the wind blowing in your hair

(yeah all right, my imagination tends to run away with me!)

LOL Would be nice if we had much wind here in Texas! LOL

I've been thinking things like: Mason jars filled with sand & some kind of wildflowers in them (depending on my colors) and mini hay bales for centerpieces, hay bales for some seating (along with regular chairs), Bar-B-Q, Beer/Iced Tea/Bottled Water for Drinks, natural raffia instead of ribbon on bouquets/invitations/centerpieces/napkins (as napkin rings), b & w/sepia pictures decorating tables throughout...

That's about it...so it's not fancy but I'm not wanting fancy so it's okay

I had a friend that went all out with the western theme. For the out side ceremony she had bails of hay for people to sit on and she had the western throw rugs over them so people wasn't sitting on the hay. The girls carried a small bou. of white daisy's and she had a really big bou of white daisy with ivy. For the center pieces she had these cute glass boots with candles inside. and hay all over the table. For favorers they gave fake spurs with the couples names and date on them. A friend personally did those for them. The buffy table was saw horse tables with hay bails all around them. The reception was under a tent and they light it up with stings of lights. It was really neat how she did it all.

I like all that...thank you for sharing it with me! I need all the different ideas I can get I had actually thought of pretty much the same setting for the reception so that's good to know that I'm not crazy with these thoughts! LOL

If you haven't already, I would concentrate on picking the venue for your reception (and ceremony). I'm not having a western theme but my reception is in a very pretty barn that is regularly rented for parties. If you are interested, look online for barns in your area and you should get some results.

Ideas:
- Strings of lightbulbs with pretty tin punched cans so they are lit up (in heart designs or your initials or something!)
- A big metal trough filled with ice and beer and soda.
- I love the brown and turquoise together! I might stray from pink - cowboys are seen as manly (to some )and I don't see pink as manly at all.
- I like the hay bales idea too! A friend of mine did this for her fall wedding.

I'll keep thinking!

Default Western theme ideas!

I work for an event planning company and we do western themed parties all the time...some of it might not correspond to a wedding but here's a few ideas. If you want to go full-on Western they may be helpful, if you're looking for something more elegant with a western twist these ideas might be a little "corny":

-Use bandanas as favors for your guests so they can feel like part of the theme

-Depending on your budget you can get glass mason jar mugs imprinted with a logo for about $1.50 each...cute glasses to use for the toast (www.landrenterprise.com)

-Your centerpieces could be whiskey bottles (think square Jack Daniel's bottles) with sun flowers or other wild flowers and the outside can be labeled with your names and wedding date to look like a whiskey label.

-You can rent black & white, blue & white or red & white checked gingham linens for your dining tables or food tables.

-If your budget allows you can rent a mechanical bull, depending on how casually guests will be dressed!

-Or buy some rubberband guns and set up tin cans for a rubber band shooting gallery...fun for kids and adults, again depends on your reception location.

That's all I can think of right now...hope it helped a little bit!

And just think how much fun it would be emptying all of those Jack Daniels bottles to use them by July!!! hehe

I like all the ideas so far... i dont really have anything to add.
