Default CAKE!!

I didn't know exactly where to put this thread but here goes: We are going cake tasting on the 6th of January, and I really don't know what types of cakes are out there besides the traditional white, yellow, chocolate, marble, etc. What kind of cakes did you all have? Were they good?

Oh, wow, there are tons of possible cake flavors, depending only on what your baker offers. We looked at one place that had so many combinations--banana, strawberry, and almond (that's the CAKE, not the filling or the frosting) were our favorites. We ended up going with a sort of strawberry shortcake thing, though; white cake with actual strawberries for filling, and for decoration on top.

Google wedding cake bakers, and just check out the websites to see what kind of flavors are offered.

I second what November said...there are a TON of cake choices to choose from. See what your baker has to offer at the tasting. We had pretty much decided what kind of cake we wanted, but we still tasted all of them to be sure.

Our cake had alternating layers, with two different kinds of cake. One kind was marble cake with mousse chocolate filling, while the other kind was white cake with strawberry filling. They were both delicious.

I recently had a wedding cake and the bottom layer was cheese cake - it was so good. Best wedding cake I had ever tasted. We chose not to have a cake b/c an amazing dessert was served with dinner.

I think if I would have went on a wedding cake tasting though, I may have changed my mind. So many choices now! Bring some back for the whole class!

we had different cakes too.
We had a white with chocolate Bavarian and raspberry filling, a chocolate cake with white Bavarian cream and fresh strawberries, and a white cake with lemon and cream filling.

We had alternating layers of traditional white and yummy chocolate. I can't recall what the filling was, so long ago. Our cake was a gift from a family friend who was my mom's maid of honor at her wedding in 1969! Anyway, when Margo heard we were getting married --and she was a retired school teacher who also decorated cakes on the side and wanted to start doing weddings full time-- she said let me do it as a gift. She asked me for ideas but I was basically unconcerned as she new I liked classic styles and told her to do what she wanted. I think we got a beautiful cake in the process that was even delicious 12 months later.... Only problem was neither Bob nor I ate anymore of our cake then the small piece we ate during the cake cutting ceremony at the reception, and that was rushed because people wanted to leave! and it was only a bit before 4pm! (our wedding started at 1) Make sure you get some of your cake! And remember that many people (at least at all the weddings I have been too) are ready to leave as soon as the ceremony is over and they have ate....

I'm so jealoous of all the different cake flavours you guys get! It hasn't really caught on very much over here. The majority of the bakers around here only do traditional rich fruit cake or plain white/vanilla sponge.

Having said that... We had 2 layer rich fruit cake & one big layer of coffee sponge with coffee filling.

Our cake was done with the bottom layer in fruit. 2 fake layers, then the top layer in rich fruit. The Coffee cake was cut & served from the kitchen so you wouldn't know it wasn't part of the cake. It would have collapsed had they tried to put the heavy fruit cake on top of a light sponge, even with the rods through to hold it, so we went with the 2 fake layers (to give it the height I wanted) but it looked like it was all real!

There are so many choices nowadays, and as some people mentioned, you can do each tier differently. I think we had a 3-tier cake, and the bottom was vanilla with chocolate mousse filling, the middle was chocolate with mocha filling and the top was vanilla with key lime filling.

If you want a second opinion though, feel free to send some samples this way!

Wow everyone has had some yum yummy cakes! That cheesecake sure does sound great!!

Neither one of us know what kind of cake we want! I mean I don't like cake that much and he hasn't had too many different kinds, so we will see what happens!

Here's the cake I really want!

Since our wedding is fall themed I thought this was perfect! The leaves on there are pure sugar!! Yum!!

It goes well with the wedding colors b/c they are red and gold!

it's beautiful! Make sure your baker can copy it if you want something exactly like that!

That cake is beautiful! Not all bakers will be skilled with sugar decorations, but you could always use silk leaves as decorations and just remove them when the cake is served.

I agree with November. Our baker could do those decorations, but they were a lot more expensive than the scrollwork we got on our cake. We didn't have anything but scrollwork, but if your baker is very expensive, you could use leaves and have them taken off before it is served. Your guests won't care if they have a leaf on their piece of cake or not.

With so many cake choices, i would ask the baker what they can make and then do a process of elimination and cross out what you wouldnt like. Maybe that'll help you narrow it down.

Yes, we have a tasting this weekend and I'm hoping to show her the cake. Their prices aren't expensive so hopefully she'd skilled enough to do this. I'm pretty sure she is though, since I've known this bakery my entire life!

Just some FYI. You may just want to look at fabric leaves if you are looking to cut some money. I know decorators can charge a pretty penny for hand making that stuff. I know a bit about cake decorating (made my wedding cake and a friend's).

Your design appears simple. Are you looking to have it in fondant as that appears bc that increases the price? Plus, many people dislike the taste of fondant. There is a rolled buttercream that tastes like buttercream but goes on like fondant.

Also, what flavors did you decide on? There are several recipes out there that you could try on your own then maybe give to your baker if you did not find something you liked.
