I wanted a monogram cake topper, but all the ones I found were outrageous. I finally found one at ebay. For 1 initial its $15 + $5 shipping, and the guy will do any font for $10 more. So I got the topper I want for $30.. much better than $130!

My topper is going to be made of fondant by the baker. The cake I chose is square 3-tier that looks like wrapped presents, so the topper is going to be a fondant bow. It will cost about $55, not the least expensive item, but since the cake is a unique design it's not too bad.

What were you thinking it would look like? We're having flowers on the top of our cake.

swim, did you get the cake pictures that I sent you? We had the florist make a cake topper that echoed my bouquet... I don't remember how much it cost but it wasn't more than $30.

We didn't use a topper at all - we didn't like any ones we saw. We simply had more fondant seashells put on top.

I have been having the same problem finding the right topper, so I don't think we are going to have one, but I can help you with your problem. If you go to myjeanm.com, they have really cool acrylic monogramed cake toppers. Hope this helps...let me know...

swim - I originally didn't want a cake topper at all, they are just kinda too fussy for me. BUT - I was going thru a bridal mag the other day, and I saw the cutest thing. It was a monogram cake topper, but it was made out of chocolate! (Yeah, there I go with chocolate again, surprise surprise!)Just 3 simple fancy-ish block letters, the two outer ones a bit smaller, and the center one with the last name initial bigger. The girl had made them herself from stuff she picked up at a craft store. Plastic molds and chocolate, and she had set popsicle sticks in them for anchoring them into the cake. We're talking like $10, and it looked great. I think with my fall colors, a dark chocolate would look great. I am sure you could use anything - white chocolate, or white chocolate with some food coloring, milk or dark chocolate. You could probably even melt hard candies like Jolly Ranchers or something to make a translucent color.

bebe, I think that's an awesome way to do a monogram topper, what a great idea! I've been accumulating so many of them... now I have to hope someone close to me will get married soon & ask for my advice

rose, believe me, if you were in my area, you would SO be hired to do my wedding cake! I just got the info back from that baker I sent a quote request to. He had called about a week ago and said he would send me a brochure with some basic pricing info. Basic meaning basic sponge cake with whatever basic filling. Not the stuff I requested. So for a basic 3-tiered cake to serve 130 people, it's $700 freaking dollars! Oh HELL no. I gotta get some more quotes. Hmmmm, there is an Albertsons about amile down the street from my wedding site...

I think this is the site where you can post to locate bakers in your area...

www.ladycakes.com

Not 100% sure. I found it when I was checking out another post on my cake forum. Most people on these forums run there own little business just for cakes and do not charge as much as bakeries.

If you plan on making your topper of chocolate yourself just a suggestion is to make 2 in case something happens in transporting. You would not want to be trying to fix it and be rushed.

bebe, thanks for the nod but I think you got me confused me there w/ gymrat... SHE's the one you'd want to hire to do your cake, my specialty is savory stuff, definitely not sweets. Cookies & flan are about it for me!

Our first & only fight/argument during the wedding planning process was when I warned DH that our cake might cost as much as $800, he totally flipped. We wound up paying $315 for a four-tier cake, each tier a different sponge & filling, and frosted in my wedding color (periwinkle blue). I'd say shop around and check out those sites gymrat/Lisa Marie recommended.

Okay I got you and rose confused - lol - you would think after a 3-day weekend I would be rested, refreshed and sane, wouldn't you? Lisa Marie - I mean to say I would so hire YOU to do my cake if you were in my area! You are our resident cake expert! Thanks for the links, I will check them out. And that's a good idea about the second back-up cake topper too! Hey since they are cheap... may as well! And if I don't need it, I guess we will just have to eat it. Maybe I will make like 3 or 4. You know, just in case.

I read a suggestion the other day that you can use a crystal ornament. (fine crystal)
and afterwards you will have the memento as well. For other creative suggestions join my group at http://groups.msn.com/CreativeDifferences.

Hmmmm, there is an Albertsons about amile down the street from my wedding site...

My Fiance and I went on a cake tasting at Albertson's. We found that they are not baked in the store but shipped from a central warehouse. All of the cakes we tried were horribly dry. They only had about 3 designs and were not willing to do ANYTHING different. They had a two-tier cake to feed 75 that was $98.69. If you want 3 tiers it is 189.00 and feeds 130. At least in my area. We ended up going with the grocery store that is right across the street from my reception site. It is called Publix ( I dont know where you are from or if they even have these stores in your area). But the cake is 139.00 for 75 guests. It also tastes much better than all of the other bakeries that we went to. If you ask me, $700 is too much money to spend on a cake! I would rather use that money somewhere else in my budget.

080805 - If you're in FL and there is a Publix nearby, they make delicious cakes at a fraction of the cost from a bakery. They can customize things for you as well. We always order from there for our parties and such

I am buying my wedding cake from publix! Being a publix employee for the last four years I can say that I have had great experiences from the bakery...(free cookies). There cakes are great though and a great price....i think they also sell cake toppers as well...Just a thought.

I ordered my cake Publix as well. They are going to make extra flowers for the cake topper, because we couldn't find one we liked. I love Publix's cakes!
