Did you get to help pick out your engagement ring???
Just curious... how many of you got to pick out your engagement rings and how many were surprised with it all ready picked out??? Were you happy with the choice made (honesty here...)?
I personally was fortunate that Joe had 3 different heirlooms in his family (one was a 3 carat that was actually stolen when their house was burglarized/// thank goodness, that would have swallowed me!!!!). I was able to pick out the setting, found a great jeweler that could have built me the one I wanted, but I saw "the one" in the case. The diamond is a near flawless 70 year old Tiffany european cut. Best of all, it is sentimental and free!! So, I was able to go a little crazy with the setting (that came with a matching band).
Lets hear your stories!!!!

No Damon chose mine and had it when he proposed - he chose exactly what I would have picked for myself - he has excellent taste!

We looked at one place I think and I kept saying 'THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT' (because you know boys can be clueless sometimes!) and when he was in Costa Rica he bought exactly the right one. Perfect for my short stubby fingers and practical self!

Rob and I looked at rings just 2 or 3 months after we started dating. (we already knew we were going to get married eventually) I found one that I really liked but was completely out of our very small budget. He knew the kind I liked (inset stone, simple design). He and his best friend actually picked out my ring without me knowing and the proposal was a complete surprise!

We went and looked at a few at Mappins.. I told Terry it was his decision. He ended up buying the one I really loved the most...

Ian had no clue what he was doing so he took me into a jewelry store and proposed to be by telling me to pick a ring out.
I picked this one out:

Jeff wanted me to pick it out because he said I had to wear it not him. I'm glad I did. He had much BIGGER taste than I did.

DH knew that I had definite preferences--no "sticky-uppy" rings (traditional solitaire); I really wanted a channel-set band, no large stones. So we picked it out together--like Gertie he actually had bigger tastes than I did, but we picked up our wedding bands at the same time so I considered how they'd look together. The wedding bands are both plain gold. My two together are about the width of his. And it's great, I don't need to take my ring off when I'm managing props for my theater group.

DH also has bigger tastes than I do. To this day he still worries that it's not "big" enough. But we went to several stores and I picked out the one I wanted. Like Gertie's DH, he said that I'm the one wearing it, not him.

We went to jewelry stores to look for rings because FH wanted to get an idea of what I like and what I didn’t like. So he knew everything that I didn’t want and had a pretty good idea of what I like. The one he picked was just the perfect one…. Even though it wasn’t the original one… The story behind the ring, he bought a set, the engagement ring with the wedding band, after he bought it he took me to the jewelry store to take a look at rings and he asked me my opinion for the one he bought (by that time I didn’t know he already had bought a ring). Well when I looked at it, it didn’t talk to me, it was pretty but it wasn’t the perfect one. He got out of the mall frustrated but I didn’t know what was wrong. Well he returned the ring back to jewelry store, went to a different store where he saw a ring that he really liked, and asked them if it was going to be possible for them to have read it in a week. They did it and Khalid was able to propose in the planned day…. I felt bad when he told me the story…..But the one he bought is just gorgeous……

DH didn't have a clue what I would like and started asking questions. He is a VERY simple guy. Had I not dropped a few hits I would have had a simple solitare (and love it ) While I don't have big tastes I did want something different.
He picked it out totally on his own. It's an eternity ring with small diamands down the side.
Mine is 2 tone. Yellow gold with white gold around the center 3 stones
this is the closest thing I have to it (couldn't get a decent picture with my camera)
I love the setting under the 3 larger diamonds, but it was impossibe to match for wedding rings. We ended up with one smaller eternity ring on either side of my Ering. They are identical except for the design under the larger 3 rings.
this is a pic from our wedding

We went and looked together so he could get an idea of what I wanted, and then that was basically the ring that I got for our engagement.

We looked together at rings, and I basically picked out a setting and a diamond. He didn't buy the ring then though, and surprised me with a proposal a couple months later.
My wedding ring matches my engagement ring setting (an eternity band) and DH picked out his ring.
Here is a picture of our rings at our wedding:

I had found my perfect ring in a store window before I met DH, and of course, I brought him over to the store to show him. We looked elsewhere, but I wasn't nearly as happy with any other ring I saw.

Bob completely picked out my e ring himself, and I love it. In fact, we are finally getting it resized (I never really wore rings before so the couple rings I had I couldn't remember their size and thought they were an 8 which was way to big! so for over 2 years my rings have been sloppy on my fingers!). I pick it up tomorrow! I am so bare without it. But now I will be able to wear it without fear.
One reason why I never wanted to get it resized before is that my mom kept saying don't, when you get older or you get pregnant your fingers will get bigger, well, if it needs to be bigger when I am older then we can resize it again! Anyway, I am going with about a 1/4 size larger to allow for my fingers to swell a bit, as per the jeweler's advice.

He asked me at one point what style of stone I liked. I told him preferrably princess cut but that I also liked the emerald and marquise cuts. I'm not a fan of baguettes. When he proposed he picked out a marquise, which I do like, but when he ordered the diamond for the e-ring he also picked out the band (which I was upset about but to this day I haven't told him that, he was so proud of himself that I couldn't tell him it's not what I would have choosen) so I wear the ring he picked for me. Besides, it's not about the ring, it's about the meaning behind it right? I just feel a little robbed that I didn't even get to show him what I liked, but when it came down to his ring I had to make sure it was something he liked because, "he's very picky".....and I'm not? Thanks, honey......
Don't worry, I'll get the ring I want yet.....

Mitch and I had looked at rings in store windows and I expressed how much I liked the marquise cut. I can't tell you how many times he asked me what the name of the cut was that I had shown him. I figured that he was planning on getting one like it. As it turns out he didn't. He got me a round stone and I must say that it is just perfect. I couldn't ask for a better ring. I am so proud of him for going out on his own and picking out what he liked!

well fh told his mom to take me to the store. I wasnt supost to know i was picking out a ring for myself. he told his mom to ask me to go with her cause her husband was going to buy her something, and then we could just happen to look at rings for myself. of course her big mouth had to come right out and tell me. why we were out the store I kept telling her I want raulie to pick out my ring, i think it will mean more to me. well she talked me into picking out 3 different ones i liked. she said oh well that one is my fav and i said mine too but again i said i want him to pick it out. of course she told the lady to hold that one only, and told him to go pick it up. i know you ladies have all heard it before but im going to say it again, she ruined it for me

I'm sorry she ruined it for you! Maybe she was just trying to help out her son--I know DH refuses to pick out jewelry without me picking it with him, because even if I give him lots of examples of what I like, he's just not comfortable and scared of getting something I won't "approve" of. I think if I'd been adamant about not picking out a ring with him, he'd have had my mother or his mother or both help him, or go with me to find out what I liked, etc. After all, your fh just wanted to be sure you'd get something you really wanted! He tried to be subtle about it, though, and it's too bad his mom messed that up for you.
