Hanukkah or Chanukah ideas please
Are there any Jewish brides here that can help us out?
I need some design ideas and some guidence please. We make personalized decorative plates and every year we come out with a new family holiday plate - here are some examples.
We have been asked by our Jewish customers to come up with a family plate like the others above but meant just for Hanukkah. We are stumped. What elements should be included - A menorah? A star of David? A dreidel? A Hebrew word? How could we include family names?
I was thinking about a combination of the two plates above - A snowman holding a mennorah & names in the snowflakes which will surround the snowman. What do you think of this idea? Do you have any other ideas?
BTW - how do most people spell it? Hanukkah or Chanukah (we have seen it both ways)???

Here are my ideas:
~use the menorah only, and put the names somewhere in each candle... either as the candle or as the flame
~I think the star of David would be a gorgeous plate. Could you put the names inside of other, smaller stars around the larger one???
I spell it Hanukkah... maybe you can ask each individual person how they would like it spelled on their plate????

Love your ideas; thanks for the input!
Blue's would be the most appropriate colours to use would they not?

I agree with Margie, those are great ideas.
My god woman - aren't you busy enough?? Now you're tapping into the Jewish market!
(I think it's a great idea!)

Hey I will do just about anything that is asked of me. My customers have been asking for these plates for the last two years but they don't give me any feedback as to what they should look like! Ahhhhhhh but with a little help from my friends, this year I am going to be ready for them!
I just don't want to make a design faux pas that might insult someone .... like using the wrong colour and/or element

I like Marge's Menorah idea too... My best friend is jewish, and she still associates snowmen with Christmas... so a plain menorah one would probably be more appropriate and sell better.
You could also do a more fun one with multiple dreidels - one with each name on the handle (I think you should use the traditional symbols on the faces of the dreidel, but have no idea where to get them).
As for the spelling... look at cards in the grocery store and how they spell it. The correct spelling is with a C, but that might not be the most popular spelling.
Don't forget to post a picture when you're done!

Thanks for the suggestions!
I had a suggestion from another person to put a yamakah (sp?) on the snowman so, I know what I will be doing this weekend - sample plates!
1 yamakah wearing snowman holding a mennorah - snow flakes with names
1 mennorah - star of David sillouettes with names
1 star of David - sillouettes of dreidels with names
& I think I will leave it up to each person if they would like Hanukkah or Chanukah put onto their plate

Maybe the star of david with a name inside a snowflake at every sharp edge of the star?

Hugh said he's going to see about making the snow flakes to look something like the star of david. I'll post pics of the digital mock ups or the sample plates to get everyone's feedback
Thanks for all the help!

How about a Star of David with the parents' names on either side, then underneath, a dreidel (sp?) with each of the kids' names (one dreidel for each kid).

It looks nice!
I think it's important that the triangles that make up the Star of David be defined. All filled in with no definition of the triangles reminds me of the stars the Nazi's made Jews wear on their coats...but that could just be me...

I wondered about that. Anyone see it the same way?
I made the stars solid in so that I could write the names inside because if I did the star of David with each triangle outlined, it might make it too busy to read the names.
With that said, if it's going to make other's think of the same, then I will figure out something else.

Yep, I feel the same as CW. Your best may be to find a rubber stamp of the shape and put them on that way.

Best for these things to be mentioned beforehand but I have another idea. I will fix it and post a new pic later.

Second sample done. We noticed that the snow flakes seem to have a star of David "feel". Of course, some snowflakes could be removed & this could become a family plate instead.
Note: The snowman appears to be "grey" in parts - this is pearalized white paint that doesn't seem to want to photograph well, but looks lovely in person.

Last one (and our personal favourite). This one is done in metallic gold & metallic bronze. The only thing we can't quite figure out is the placement of the names if the family has an odd number of members.

It looks great Elizabeth!! I'd say tackle the problem of what to do with an odd number of names when you have someone request it. Maybe you could do the mother and father together (at the top of the star) and the rest of them scattered around.

I like that last one the best. I didn't really like either the solid stars (same problem as others mentioned re: stars on Jewish clothing) or the dreidels as much. I think maybe the dreidel seemed too long and skinny compared to the dreidels I've seen--which aren't many; I'm not Jewish, so it's pretty much limited to the colored plastic ones I occasionally got as some attempt at multiculturalism or something in elementary school.
As far as an odd number of names, what if you didn't write them in the corners of the star, but moved them to the edge of the plate, closer together one below the other? Then if you had, say, four on one side and three on the other, there wouldn't be so much of an unbalanced appearance?
