I have heard about it too... Is it proper? Or does it seem that you are asking for cash?

People are inevitably going to bring cards to the wedding/reception, and a card box is a great place to make sure they are all in one place and that some don't disappear. If someone were to try and make away with a card, they'd have to carry the whole box instead of just a card, which is much easier to conceal.

We made one in the shape of a wedding cake that people dropped cards in, and put it on our gift table.

Here are some examples and a few links to see more examples, styles, and differnet price ranges.

I would also check on E-bay.
If you are crafty, you can make one.

I hope I could help a little

Well it doesnt really have anything to do with etiquette, its more of a convenience because even if they dont bring cash or a gift, they most likely will bring a card and it saves them time trying to figure out who to give the card too cuz i'm sure if theyre bringing cash, they wouldnt want to just leave it on the gift table

I don't think it's poor etiquete at all. I know that when I go to a wedding and there is no place for me to put the card I get nervous that it will get lost and the couple will never see it. If you have a card box or basket it will really help your guests and you won't have to worry about gathering up cards and not missing any.
