Guest List
When should you start making your guest list and trying to sort out invitations and addresses? I am thinking I should start this soon but I am not sure if that is too early? When did you do these things?

DJ and I have already started thinking about it, and our wedding is almost 2 years away. It's never too early to start thinking about it, especially since you'll probably change it a lot.

Have you already reserved your ceremony and/or reception site? You probably had to put an initial one together for that to see how many guests you were expecting, right? Now, if you're inquiring as to when you start collecting addresses, yes I'd say start right away. It takes a long time to get them from everyone.
As for invitations, we bought ours pretty early as I'm the kind of person who liked to get things done right away and then have it crossed off the list.

I started working on a very rough draft of mine when we first got engaged (a year and a half before the wedding). I am really cracking down on it now (7 months before the wedding), because I need to send out STD cards within the next few months.
I would say start working on it, at least a little ASAP, then as the wedding gets closer fine tune it.

You should actually try to get your STD's out ASAP.

Really? I though it was 5-6 months before the wedding?

Most people need more notice that that if they have to make travel plans, or in some cases, take off work. Our Save the Dates (I just can't call them STDs without giggling like a fiend) are going to be going out just under a year in advance because most of my family is in Ireland and so they need more notice than those who are just travelling to the ceremony site from the same city. I think it really depends on your who your guests are and how far away they live.

Our invites were just sent out - aprox 3 months to the date of the wedding. Like the others have said we had a rough invite list right from the start and were editing this all the time, we always had a rough idea who was coming!
And yeah Angel - you should get your STD cards out ASAP, I understand that you should have these out 8months to a year before the wedding.

I'd say getting together a rough guest list is one of the best ways to start planning because so much hinges on the guest numbers.

We aren't even officially engaged and I know who is on my guest list. I am not sure about him, but I know I have a lot more people than he does!

We made our initial guest list soon after we got engaged so we could start looking at reception sites.
On my side of the guest list, ALL of my family and friends were coming from OOT, so we sent out save-the-dates 7 months early and sent out invitations 2 months out.
I would say that it definitely isn't too early to compile your guest list and start to get addresses....unless you have all the addresses already, sometimes it can take a while to track them all down.

I would get on it ASAP. That way you have an estimate for the vendors that you are working with, and can stick within your budget. I added 10 extra to my first one... just in case. Then, you will probably have to redo it multiple times. I know that now that I am going with a high end caterer, I will have to cut some people off of the list.

Our guest list was one of the first things we did after our engagment. Ofcourse, we added and crossed people out several times.
We are pretty set on our list now with 3 months to go!

I'm so glad I saw this post. My FH thought i was crazy to be working on the guest list and the wedding isn't until Sept 09. I was beginning to agree with him. But then I got to thinking, the guest list even determines the location. I don't want to find a place that I love, only to find out I have too many guests.
