Potted Orchid Centerpieces
My FH wants potted orchid centerpieces for our wedding. I think that it would be beautiful, but would that be super expensive??? Any good places to look for some on deals? I was thinking candles and maybe tall flowering branches in vintage vases... But flowering branches that I have researched are not in season in October, I have gone to craft stores, but he refuses to have anything fake...

my fav idea:

He has very modern, contemporary tastes, but we are in a Southern elegant room, with out of towners that want to experience Charleston, and I am afraid that orchids would look out of place (and expensive!!). This is the place, overlooking the marsh with a fireplace, wrap around porch, and rocking chairs... very southern... What do you think? I am meeting with florists in the next few weeks.

One of the girls I work with is an "orchid expert". Apparently the common white variety you see in stores is REALLY easy to grow, so if you have time, maybe you could save money and grow them yourself? I've also seen them at Home Depot (when they're in season) for about $25 each - which may be in your budget depending on how many tables you have.
Keep in mind that orchids only flower once a year for about a month. So you would have to choose a variety that will be flowering around the time of your wedding (which I don't think the white variety is).
I know FH is totally opposed to fake, but I got a REALLY GOOD fake one at Michaels for only $8... and I generally am opposed to fake as well.
Have you thought abotu other potted plants? I am plannning to do violets, and I found a grower online who sells cultivated plants for $5 each - but I will have to grow them a little before the wedding. Maybe in addition to talking to your florist, you should talk to a local greenhouse to find out what plants would be in season that they could provide for you.
I'll try to pin down our resident Orchid expert and ask for her advice and get back to you.

Thats a great idea about another potted plant... I am afraid I would kill all the orchids (I can't grow anything!!!)

I am envisioning that too, with the instrumental jazz band we just hired. It is just convincing the FH about that Idea... I am working on it... Finding pictures and showing him. He'll come around with enough persistance, trust me, I know him well.

Something like that and incorporating gold into the room.

Like both of them, but if the orchids don't work out for you, the candles will be georgious as well. Will there be many kids there? You have to be carefull with candles in the presence of children, for obvious reasons.

You also want to think about the height. If they are really tall some guest may not be able to see around them and place them on the floor kinda rude but I have seen it done. Just something to think about
