So yesterday was the day that i started to finally exercise!! I have been telling myself that i was going to start exercising but i hadn't been able to make myself go! but now i have finally started. Yesterday FH and i went to play tennis (first time ever for me) It was very tiring! Chasing after that ball everywhere!! FH said i have a good swing and lots of power behind it but im such a girl and have no aim or can't follow where the ball is to save my life, i thought it was kinda funny seeing him chasing after the ball when i hit it EVERYWHERE!! This morning we got up and went for a 30 minute run!! Im so tired!! The next couple of days we will be running and then the weekend we will play tennis again. FH's dad has a really nice pool and we will be swimming in it when he gets it ready for the summer (it is gross green right now and i refuse to go anywhere near it until it is cleaned out) Im actually excited about exercising and FH is doing it with me so we get to spend US time together ALONE!! NONE OF HIS GUY FRIENDS AROUND!!

Good for you! That's great. Expect to be really sore though! After my first workout in like 87 years, I felt like I had been trampled by a herd of gazelles that was being chased by a pack of hungry lions, and then was trampled by those same lions, and when the vultures were done picking my insides apart the fire ants got whatever was left. It was brutal, but will be worth it!!! And yes, it's awesome if you can get FH to do it with you - more alone time! I am still working on FH to join me...

That is really great swim! You'll also find that you eat better on days that you work out. For some reason, I just don't feeling like eating "bad" on days that I've got a good sweat in. usually, I just want to have fish or chicken and veggies for dinner. FH feels that way too after he's worked out.
Bebe, you are CRAZY!! I don't think I've ever felt THAT bad, but yes you will be sore!

Let me tell you something about pain after exercising. If you take three to five minutes AFTER exercise to properly stretch out all of your major muscle groups, you will feel little or no soreness the next day. I always used to stretch BEFORE workouts, but never after, and I'd always be sore. At Curves (the gym I've been going to for 11 months), they instruct their members to stretch AFTER the workout. As a result, I'm virtually never sore AT ALL after a workout. Even the first time I worked out there (after years of inactivity), I was not sore at all the next day.

rickey, my fh, told me (he's a runner and physical opver-achiever, punk) that the only "warming up" you should EVER do (esp the older you get) is walk briskly.. you risk injury otherwise.... and you should, as feb tells us, ALWAYS cool down by stretching... feb, do ya'll do weights? i always still hurt after doing arm weights... maybe i'm just that out of shape!!

I just started my exercise program too. So far I'm only doing weights and toning...I'm still working on the cardio, fat-burning thing

. We have a stability ball and free weights and medicine balls at home so its easy to get a quick workout in for building muscle and toning, but the cardio is the part I hate...and also the part I haven't forced myself to start yet. Sigh.

Sorry I'm about to hop in with my own questions in your thread.
I need to lose about 35LB to be exactly how I want to be next March. We have a treadmill in the house. I was doing it everyday for a week straight, a good painful amount of time ranging from 17-25 min. walking on an incline at 3.5MPH. I thought I'd see some progress. But I was way discouraged to not have any...even after I changed eating habits.
I'm assuming it takes more than a week, but now I'm in the middle of a binge and working my way back to doing it again and not giving up. Can anyone tell me how long it took them before they saw their first results? Anyone who was between 20-40LB overweight. I'll do it again anyway, I'm just a punk when it comes to getting results right away.

I'll add another question, too:
Anyone have any good arm toning ideas? I don't have free weights and honestly don't think I'd use them long term enough to buy some. Any other ideas?

I love this website for exercise and healthy eating tips.
And here are my thoughts - these are things that work for me. The food thing - well, you can't ever consider it a diet, because diets are temporary. Just adopting a healthier eating plan is key. Diets ALWAYS fail, healthy eating is long-term. If you ever try to completely cut anything out of your diet (carbs, sweets, chocolate, sodas) you are setting yourself up for a binge. Still eat those things that you love, just don't go crazy. Have a scoop of ice cream instead of a whole pint. If you have to have McDonalds fries (like I do! They are just so delicious!) get a small fry instead of a super sized #2 meal. And EAT SLOWLY and savor every bite of food. You feel a lot more satisfied after a meal than if you inhale it.
Most people can actually start to SEE their results in their bodies in 8-12 weeks. It sounds like a long time, but you have to remember that you see yourself everyday, so you are not likely to notice the subtle changes that someone who hasn't seen you in a while will. My biggest tip is this - HIDE YOUR SCALE! Pounds don't matter - inches do. If you are working out, you are going to burn fat and gain muscle mass, and muscle weighs more than fat. So you really could actually gain pounds (muscle) but lose inches (fat.) Do not rely on your scale to tell you that you are getting healthier, because that number doesn't mean much! My co-worker outweighs me by 10 pounds and is 1 or 2 sizes smaller than me, because she works out so she has the smaller heavier muscle mass, while I have fat mass, which is larger and lighter. For a comparison - everyone knows about how big a pound of ground beef is right? That is a pound of muscle. It's pretty small. Well, a pound of fat is about the size of a regulation football, like twice the size of a pound of muscle mass. When I lose the mass I want to, which will drop me down a size, I will most likely still weigh the same. You just can't count on the scale. Pay attention to the way your clothes fit and your energy level. Getting on the scale just makes you obsess (well, it makes me obsess!) Plus you can fluctuate several pounds in a day based on how hydrated you are/aren't and your sodium intake.

This isn't the Classifieds, but I'm going to push a program. Curves. I go, I know Feb-bride goes. It works. And the equipment they have (which is part of a big circle so you use every piece at least twice) separately tones every part of your body. There is a machine for the thighs, there are three for the abdomen, there is one for the gluts, three separate ones for different parts of the arms. Even if you only go twice a week (maintenence level) you see a difference, but it will take four solid weeks of 3-4 times a week to see it. The best part is that Curves measures several important areas, and remeasures every month to show you how much you have (or haven't) lost. Go try Curves, its only 35 minutes out of your day.
