So yesterday was the day that i started to finally exercise!! I have been telling myself that i was going to start exercising but i hadn't been able to make myself go! but now i have finally started. Yesterday FH and i went to play tennis (first time ever for me) It was very tiring! Chasing after that ball everywhere!! FH said i have a good swing and lots of power behind it but im such a girl and have no aim or can't follow where the ball is to save my life, i thought it was kinda funny seeing him chasing after the ball when i hit it EVERYWHERE!! This morning we got up and went for a 30 minute run!! Im so tired!! The next couple of days we will be running and then the weekend we will play tennis again. FH's dad has a really nice pool and we will be swimming in it when he gets it ready for the summer (it is gross green right now and i refuse to go anywhere near it until it is cleaned out) Im actually excited about exercising and FH is doing it with me so we get to spend US time together ALONE!! NONE OF HIS GUY FRIENDS AROUND!!

Good for you! That's great. Expect to be really sore though! After my first workout in like 87 years, I felt like I had been trampled by a herd of gazelles that was being chased by a pack of hungry lions, and then was trampled by those same lions, and when the vultures were done picking my insides apart the fire ants got whatever was left. It was brutal, but will be worth it!!! And yes, it's awesome if you can get FH to do it with you - more alone time! I am still working on FH to join me...

That is really great swim! You'll also find that you eat better on days that you work out. For some reason, I just don't feeling like eating "bad" on days that I've got a good sweat in. usually, I just want to have fish or chicken and veggies for dinner. FH feels that way too after he's worked out.

Bebe, you are CRAZY!! I don't think I've ever felt THAT bad, but yes you will be sore!

LOL bebe... now that you put it so graphically, i'm all of a sudden less inspired!!!! j/k yeah, so fh and i are running in a 5k in a month, and i've yet to hit the pavement since, oh, april.. it is so GOSHDANG HOT here!!! heat index at 102 and so frikkin humid!!!!!! <gasping for air even now> .... but, since i _actually_ bought my gown, i guess that should be incentive enough, eh?!?!? swim, are you looking to lose or just tone??? i need to lose 15 to be at my ideal weight...

Let me tell you something about pain after exercising. If you take three to five minutes AFTER exercise to properly stretch out all of your major muscle groups, you will feel little or no soreness the next day. I always used to stretch BEFORE workouts, but never after, and I'd always be sore. At Curves (the gym I've been going to for 11 months), they instruct their members to stretch AFTER the workout. As a result, I'm virtually never sore AT ALL after a workout. Even the first time I worked out there (after years of inactivity), I was not sore at all the next day.

So THAT'S what I have been doing wrong all these years! Thanks for the tip! Hopefully no safari for me next time.

rickey, my fh, told me (he's a runner and physical opver-achiever, punk) that the only "warming up" you should EVER do (esp the older you get) is walk briskly.. you risk injury otherwise.... and you should, as feb tells us, ALWAYS cool down by stretching... feb, do ya'll do weights? i always still hurt after doing arm weights... maybe i'm just that out of shape!!

I just started my exercise program too. So far I'm only doing weights and toning...I'm still working on the cardio, fat-burning thing . We have a stability ball and free weights and medicine balls at home so its easy to get a quick workout in for building muscle and toning, but the cardio is the part I hate...and also the part I haven't forced myself to start yet. Sigh.

Sorry I'm about to hop in with my own questions in your thread.

I need to lose about 35LB to be exactly how I want to be next March. We have a treadmill in the house. I was doing it everyday for a week straight, a good painful amount of time ranging from 17-25 min. walking on an incline at 3.5MPH. I thought I'd see some progress. But I was way discouraged to not have any...even after I changed eating habits.

I'm assuming it takes more than a week, but now I'm in the middle of a binge and working my way back to doing it again and not giving up. Can anyone tell me how long it took them before they saw their first results? Anyone who was between 20-40LB overweight. I'll do it again anyway, I'm just a punk when it comes to getting results right away.

I'll add another question, too:

Anyone have any good arm toning ideas? I don't have free weights and honestly don't think I'd use them long term enough to buy some. Any other ideas?

I love this website for exercise and healthy eating tips.

And here are my thoughts - these are things that work for me. The food thing - well, you can't ever consider it a diet, because diets are temporary. Just adopting a healthier eating plan is key. Diets ALWAYS fail, healthy eating is long-term. If you ever try to completely cut anything out of your diet (carbs, sweets, chocolate, sodas) you are setting yourself up for a binge. Still eat those things that you love, just don't go crazy. Have a scoop of ice cream instead of a whole pint. If you have to have McDonalds fries (like I do! They are just so delicious!) get a small fry instead of a super sized #2 meal. And EAT SLOWLY and savor every bite of food. You feel a lot more satisfied after a meal than if you inhale it.

Most people can actually start to SEE their results in their bodies in 8-12 weeks. It sounds like a long time, but you have to remember that you see yourself everyday, so you are not likely to notice the subtle changes that someone who hasn't seen you in a while will. My biggest tip is this - HIDE YOUR SCALE! Pounds don't matter - inches do. If you are working out, you are going to burn fat and gain muscle mass, and muscle weighs more than fat. So you really could actually gain pounds (muscle) but lose inches (fat.) Do not rely on your scale to tell you that you are getting healthier, because that number doesn't mean much! My co-worker outweighs me by 10 pounds and is 1 or 2 sizes smaller than me, because she works out so she has the smaller heavier muscle mass, while I have fat mass, which is larger and lighter. For a comparison - everyone knows about how big a pound of ground beef is right? That is a pound of muscle. It's pretty small. Well, a pound of fat is about the size of a regulation football, like twice the size of a pound of muscle mass. When I lose the mass I want to, which will drop me down a size, I will most likely still weigh the same. You just can't count on the scale. Pay attention to the way your clothes fit and your energy level. Getting on the scale just makes you obsess (well, it makes me obsess!) Plus you can fluctuate several pounds in a day based on how hydrated you are/aren't and your sodium intake.

This isn't the Classifieds, but I'm going to push a program. Curves. I go, I know Feb-bride goes. It works. And the equipment they have (which is part of a big circle so you use every piece at least twice) separately tones every part of your body. There is a machine for the thighs, there are three for the abdomen, there is one for the gluts, three separate ones for different parts of the arms. Even if you only go twice a week (maintenence level) you see a difference, but it will take four solid weeks of 3-4 times a week to see it. The best part is that Curves measures several important areas, and remeasures every month to show you how much you have (or haven't) lost. Go try Curves, its only 35 minutes out of your day.

I will vouch for Curves too - I did it for a few months. The only reason I stopped going was because I discovered that I hate working out in a gym/group. I also get bored very easily with exercise and I have to switch it up frequently to stay motivated. But Curves IS a great program, and it's women only, so you don't have to worry about getting harassed or feeling self-conscious. They were all very supportive, and yes, it does work!

For me, it took me about three weeks before I saw results, but I was exercising twice a day, chugging tons of water and cutting back food portion sizes. So it really depends. You have until next March though so I wouldn't worry as much about it. I had a month to lose weight so I had to really move fast.

Bebe, that was all very well said.

Cru5h, I recommend seting a goal and reward for yourself. One time when I was really starting to get going, I told myself that if I exercised for AT LEAST 30 minutes, 4 times a week for 4 months, then I would be able to go get a massage. I LOVE massages, so it was a great incentive for me. I also made sure I told people around me and my FH and I knew so that they would know if I was cheating. And guess what, I wanted to go get a massage badly enough that I made myself do it. That darn massage never felt so good! So, give yourself a goal and a reward. It sure worked for me.

Curves is GREAT. I've been going since July 2004 and have lost almost 25 pounds and over 30 inches. I've went from a size 18/20 to a size 14 in that time.

Curves combines cardiovascular exercise with weight training. The weight machines are hydraulic, which means that the faster you work the machines, the more intense workout you get. They're not like typical weight machines where you have to set the weight that you want to lift. If you want to get a harder workout, just move faster.

It took me about four weeks to really start noticing a difference in the way I looked. I first noticed a difference in my face, but I also started noticing differences in my bust (went from a 42D to a 38DD), my thighs, and my arms.

Better than the physical aspects of exercising, I have made huge health strides in the past 11 months. I'm a diabetic, and when I started going to Curves, my sugar in the mornings (when I first wake up) was usually anywhere from 210 to 240 (yikes). Now, I'm usually anywhere from 130 to 140 (still slightly higher than it should be, but very close to being completely under control). My 3-month glucose average was 9.2 when I started going to Curves (WAY too high). I had another 3-month average test in early May, and my score was 7.0 (anything UNDER 7.0 is considered to be good, so I'm virtually there).

My cholesterol has improved as well. When I started going to Curves, I was taking a cholesterol-lowering drug, and my LDL (the "bad" cholesterol) was 154. Four months after I started going to Curves, my LDL was 67 (considered to be EXCELLENT; anything under 100 is considered to be healthy).

cru5h, a year ago, i had 25-30 lbs to lose, and by jogging 25 min a day, alternating w/ a cindy crawford workout video (pls dont harrass me for that ladies!!! lol), i saw results in a month. and it was a lot-seeming, b/cs no progress, no progress, and then all of a sudden 4 wks later i was down a size... that was all the motivation i needed. unfortunately, i have since pulled 10 extra lbs back, and could still lose 10 more to really be great in my mind.... but my thing is self-control! ack.. so hard sometimes!!!

Look at you go, Feb! You are a great success story for Curves!

clairon, I won't make fun of you for that Cindy Crawford video. Whatever works, man! Just keep at it, right?

The Mickey Mouseketeers used to have an exercise show... we taped about 10 of them from TV and did them at work at lunch. Anything that makes you exercies is good.

Hey man, those tapes work if you can find one that you like. I use The Firm with the step and sculpting bar. It's a TOUGH workout, but they guarantee visible results in 10 workouts. I have only been home in the evening to workout ONE TIME in the past 2 weeks, it has been rediculous. Hmmm - maybe I will post a before and after picture based on 3 months worth of workouts...

My wedding is September 2, 2006 and I need to lose a loooooot of weight like about 90-110 lbs. Im planning on going on the low carb diet; so please pray for me.

Mrs. bubba... I don't think any diet will work without exercise. Calories out must exceed calories in. So start a good exercise plan along with the low-carb diet, and those pounds will dissolve away.
