So....I am beyond white. I have a strapless dress. We are havng an outdoor summer wedding. Does something seem wrong here? What products or tanning techniques do you reccomend to someone who just doesn't tan?

first of all, why do you need to tan? If you truly do not tan ever, it's possible that you will not look like yourself when you do tan, and yes you want to look amazing on your wedding day but you also want to look like yourself.

From one pasty whitey to another, look up tanning salons that offer Mystic Tan. It's an airbrush sunless tanner. Average price here in FL is $25 for one session. One application should be enough for you if you're as white as I am. I don't get this sort of tan for everyday business though. Special occasion only. Wedding day would be special enough for me. Actually you can get it done a few days before the wedding. It lasts about 4-5 days. Exfoliate before you go and moisturize both before and after.

Otherwise, when I'm feeling I need color (before I hit the beach for the first time after a long while), Loreal makes an awesome sunless tanner. It's called Bronze something or another. I have the gel-looking tube and the spray can, and while my tan doesn't come out dark on the first application, it is SO noticeable that putting on more would be absurd.

Make sure to put lotion on your knees, elbows, ankles and other dry spots just before applying tanner *lightly* to those areas, if you're going to do it yourself. Best results come from doing it at night for some reason. Be sure you're dry before getting into full clothing. Long pants will rub it off your thigh and knee areas which will make you look patchy.

Use the gel on your face. Apply evenly. Put lotion on your upper lip before putting the tanner on that area. Just keep smoothing it in until you're *sure* you've got it all covered. Careful around your eyebrows and hairline.

It's such a pain in the butt that I rarely go through all of this. I'd rather be pale. But I'll be Mystic Tanned on my wedding day.

It's so weird, I have great pale skin that all the little old ladies around here compliment me on, but when I have a tan I look more healthy and everyone seems to think I've done something different with myself. It's nice.

I am so white! I have the same problem, I burn burn burn!
But - The mystic tanners are about $20-$25 in my area (upstate NY) and they are good, even and work well.

When in the summer is the wedding? If it's late enough (late July/August), you may have time. Mine was in September and I barely went to the beach that summer - I simply laid out during my lunch hour (I'm usually pale). I didn't have a deep tan - just enough to not look like a ghost.

If time's not really on your side, I vote for one of those syray-on tans - just use a low setting.

I've heard good things about the new airbrush tanning. Find someone in your area that does it and try it now to see if you like it. If you do, just go get it done before your wedding!

Mystic tan is great! If I wasn't going to Hawaii for my honeymoon I would go this route, but I need the natural protection from a base tan (in addition to sunscreen, of course!) But I will be heading to the tanning beds, one last time. I am also ultra pale so I start my sessions at 6 minutes and build up from there. I will have to start tanning about 2 months in advance in order to have any noticeable amout of color because I tan so slowly.

I'm with Bebe. I have to tan now to avoid being BURNT on the honeymoon! I've actually started going already (for my October wedding), mostly to avoid tan lines that I may get throughout the summer. I already have a bit of a base tan (but I still look white to everyone else!) and will only go about once a week until the wedding, if that. And Bebe, don't laugh too hard, but I actually started at 4 minutes, and still got a little pink, but it faded the next day. I've finally built up to... get this... 7 minutes!

Mystic Tan is being made popular by celebs like Charlize Theron and...umm... other tan people. It doesn't turn anyone orange. Make sure you moisturize the parts which would absorb more (knees, elbows, ankles) before you go in though. Most self-tanners now are SO much better than when they first came out. The cheapy cheap ones may still turn people orange.

Alot of those celebs look, well, like oompa loompas to me! You can so tell they are fake tans. Totally orange! Everyone I have seen in person who has gotten one looks orange too. Personally I would not try it.

Christina Aguilera looks orange to me. I haven't noticed anyone else looking orange and/or ridiculous other than her really.

Maybe you can get a test area done, like somewhere no one will see (except maybe your FH).

I've found that most people I've met who fake tanned did end up orange, so personally I'm against fake tanning.

I need to add another caution: if you're going somewhere tropical for your honeymoon, do NOT aim for a deep tan. Just go for a healthy glow - otherwise, you'll come back from the honeymoon looking like burnt leather.

Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohen, Jessica Simpson...just call them the orange lolli-pops.

That sais, and I know none of you want to hear this, but the rate of melanoma skin cancer (the very deadly kind) has more than tripled in people under 30... and you are considered at higher risk if you have a history of severe sunburn as a child, or if you are readheaded/green eyes or blonde/blue eyes, OR (and here comes the bad news) if you have visited a tanning bed more than ten times. (That's ten times total, not ten times this month.) Something about a different type of UV, and no matter what the manufacturers say, no tanning bed gives "the good UV rays," because there are no "good" UV rays. A base coat tan will not really protect you from a sunburn. If someone is afraid they will fade into their white dress, then use one of the airbrush tans (not the orangeinators), but the majority of people on this forum are just asking for skin cancer.

Wynelle - do you remember forever ago when I asking you about melanoma? I finally had that mole on my back checked and all was okay. I of course stayed away from the sun and tanning beds until I knew for sure. Even now, I go out with crazy amounts of sunscreen and don't go tanning. I use Olay's new lotion with just a *touch* of enhancer.

Also - remember ladies - the sun is the number one cause of WRINKLES! Not smoking, not facial expressions - but the sun. Careful or you'll end up looking like beef jerkey by the time your 35!

LOL notice why I'm a huge advocate of tans in bottles and cans. I had a mole removed from my back and one from my leg. I used to go to the beach every single weekend as a kid and teen. Then I got pregnant and stopped going in the sun, worried about stretchmarks and stuff. I turned STARK white, 'cause I didn't go into the sun much even after the baby. And that's when the moles were removed. I have a 1 inch long thick pink scar on my shoulder blade. It ain't pretty. I freckle from the sun now. I don't tan.

OMG the old ladies who used to come into the boutique I worked in. They must have baked under the Florida sun for decades and then now that they're in their 50-60s they want to reverse the effects of the sun. Nothing works, just plastic surgery - and even that's iffy.

Find a good self-tanner is and always will be my suggestion for a golden glow. I visited the drug store and did test streaks on my inner arms, looked at the marks a few hours later in daylight and indoor lights and went back and bought the good one.

One thing I am worried about with fake tanning (from a bottle) is missing parts or making parts darker than others. When you get tan from a bottle, do you have someone else help you apply it? And if you accidentally apply to much, will it come out uneven? Or will it be a basic color all over. I've never tried applying it myself, although I did try a Mystic Tan and it worked out ok.

Heather, I am so glad your moles were all negative! I thought about you when that last article came out! Better pale than dead... and some of those little old ladies who look like dehydrated dessicated leather are really only in their forties..

Me too Wynelle, thank you.

Maroki - the Olay isn't a strong tanning lotion, it's just a very, very light enhancer. All it does is give you a glow so you don't look like a ghost. If you misplace it, no one would even notice.

maroki - when I first tried the Loreal one, I did misplace it. But it wasn't such a deep tan that it was noticeable. I knew to moisturize the areas that absorb more so my knees and elbows never came out too dark. But I didn't know that my ankle area (actually the part of the ankle more on the foot than the leg) was one of those areas so I found out really quickly.

Orange comes from too much at one time. Well my ankles sure looked orange. But everything else was great. Luckily my sandal straps covered my orange ankles.

It's pretty easy to make it even since Loreal does both a gel which rubs in nicely and a spray. Like I said before...it's truly a PAIN in the butt to do the procedure. It takes time, you have to watch your wrists and fingers as well, wash hands between each large body part so you don't tan your palms, do your arms last and take care of the backs of your hands so they're not still white, while not messing up the rest of yourself. It takes a long time to dry, drops of water or dribbles of it going down your arm before the tanner is set will cause lines or dots. That's why I'd rather stay pale or go Mystic for special occassions. I only fake tan when I'm going to be in a swimsuit for the first time of the season or if I'm taking pictures so I don't make the flash any brighter Sometimes I've been known to just do my face and arms during the "winter".

Haha I agree with cru5h...I'm staying white. I don't think I look better with a tan, and I really like my milky white skin, so no tanning for me.

Ok....so here's a question. I, the white girl, recently got the worste sunburn I think I have had in years. Which has now left me with very noticable tan lines on my shoulders and back. What can I do before going in for a mystic tan to limit me from having even worse tan lines?

**************************************************

posted by cru5h

Topless? I don't know how you'd feel about that. You can also have your makeup artist/person cover the tanlines with makeup. I saw a big article on this in...Seventeen magazine I think. It had Hilary Duff on the cover I think. My 14 y/o step daughter left it out. I HAD to read LOL.

I did the tan in a can recently and looked like Garfeild for a few days...well minus the whiskers and the fur. But yeah if you need to tan for your wedding, do the airbrush thing, it's great for special occasions. I am a wimp when it comes to tanning beds. And one of my good friends had skin cancer so now I am a HUGE wimp.

Hey, I'm a redhead, so I feel your pain... talk about white. But I have been spray tanned by hand at a spa. It was awesome. I got 4 treatments for $100. They lasted about a week, just make sure you exfoliate and spread out your fingers so you don't have little white triangles between them! The feet can be trouble areas too.

The thing about tanning in a bottle is that like some of the other posts have suggested, you can still look tan without the skin cancer risk. I'm just paranoid about skin cancer, so I use the Neutrogena Instant Bronze. It doesn't have the smell that most bronzers do, so it's been the best I've found so far. I just got a nice Kinerase cream that has UVA and UVB sunscreens combined in it. At least with that you're not as vulnerable to the ultra violet rays.
Edited: Oops, I forgot to give the link to the Kinerase cream. Here you go: http://genuine.bz/kinerase

Well, my wedding was on Saturday and I was tan!!! I actually went and got airbrushed and it looked so good. The first day was definately an orange one, but after the first day when you can take a shower, the top layer washes off leaving you with a beauitful tan. Thanks everyone for your posts!

I have fallen in love with Cellex-C Bio Tan Sunless Tanning Gel. It goes on so easily and evenly. It is more pricy but for a natural lasting look, I haven't found anything better out of the cheap stuff. Here's a link to check it out: http://freeshipping.moneybackguarantee.us/cellex_c/
