Wedding at home
My fiance and I have been giving some thought to just having a VERY small intitmate wedding at his parents house. We are thinking some where between 5 and 25 guests. The problem is that we don't know where to start. We know that by going this road we will have problems you wouldn't normally have if you went with a reception hall but it will also allow us a more relaxed laid back event. Any thoughts, ideas, and or suggestions would help out a lot!

Congratulations on your engagement! Your idea of a home wedding sounds fabulous! I think a wedding at home is so personal and memorable.
Are you planning on having it outdoors or indoors? I would start by figuring out how many guests you can accomodate wherever you plan to have the ceremony. That way you won't invite more people than you can handle. After that you'll probably want to decide on a wedding date and get the invitations out. If you're having an outdoor wedding you may want to look into renting a tent in case if it rains.
A friend of mine got married in her friends home and it was beautiful! One of the main issues is just making sure there is room for everyone to be seated. Then also you should figure out how the reception will work. There should be room for people to get around and mingle. Parking is another area to consider.
The nice part about having a wedding at home is that you won't be subject to a lot of the rules that come from renting a facility. For example, if you decide to make any of the refreshments yourself you can do that. Some places won't let you bring in any home-made food but require that you get a caterer.
Best wishes to you!
~Laura

I personally would start with the guest list. That way you can work out how feasable it is to limit yourself on guest numbers.
I think it's a wonderful idea though. One of my friends only had 15 people at her wedding (which was actually kind of grand) and it was a wonderful day. Your guests will really get to feel involved & special because you'll have plenty of time with them
By the way... Welcome to pash!

Welcome to Pash
I think it sounds like a wonderfull I dea, I would definatly look into renting a tent if it is an out side wedding, also you may need to rent additional chairs, tables, etc. depending on how many you have available in the house.
What are your plans or ideas for decorations, food and cake?

Thanks for the suggestions it really was a big help and it really has gotten me thinking..... I just need to sit down with Malachi (fiance) so we can talk about some of this. I know EVERYONE suggests that you rent a tent but what I was wondering is this. If the wedding is small enough is it okay to just have guests go indoors if the weather gets bad?

Oh, I wanted to thank EVERYONE for welcoming me and being so nice!!!! I also thought I should let you in on a couple of the details we do have. We set the date for September 22, 2007 because it will be our 12 year anniversery! It was a very big deal to both of us to having our wedding take place on this day. For the theme we want to go either Asain or fall. I love the idea of us getting married under a tree at dusk with chinese lanterns hanging all around from it's branches but I don't know how easy or inexpensive something like that would be to do. As you can tell we do want an outdoor wedding but if weather gets bad then inside it is= Thanks again for welcoming me!

Welcome to PASH!
Someone here did red Chinese lanterns I can't remember who it was. I know you can get them at the Dollar Tree. Not sure what color but if I'm thinking right someone on here sprayed them to get the color they wanted. There is all kinds of ways to make them light up. Christmas lights, candles (If the lanterns you get can hold up to heat.) You could still go with the Chinese lanterns and still go with the fall theme.

That sounds beautiful and it shouldn't be to expensive. Where do you live? I know here in OCtober it is sometimes beautiful out and sometimes freezing.

Thanks for all the lantern links and ideas. VERY helpful! Being that we live in Ohio I am hoping that a good quantity of leaves will have fallen from some of the trees. I am thinking that maybe it would look good to have them raked up down the sides of the aisle. This way I wouldn't need to get an aisle runner and it would be a free way to decorate. What do you think?

Welcome, good to find another newbe= Congrats to you also. I agree that the guest list is probably the best way to begin and so I have started making the long list so we can cut it down. As you point out it won't do us any good to plan for a home wedding if we can't fit anyone in the home LOL!

I think all of your ideas sound great!! Leaves running down the aisle sound beautiful, unless of course it's windy that day. Let's hope not. I wish we would've known someone here that we could've used their backyard. I probably still would've had my reception somewhere else, but a backyard ceremony sounds awesome to me!
