I have been thinking about getting my legs waxed for the wedding and was wondering about any experiences (good/bad) you guys have had with it? I don't really know anything about it...I would go somewhere and get it done, not do it myself. How many days before the wedding should I get it done? Should I test it out once before the wedding date? How long does the hair have to grow before (sorry for the explicitness) you can get it waxed? And finally...how painful is it REALLY? I had someone tell me once that she went in to get her legs waxed for her wedding...and almost left halfway through because it was so painful.

I used to get my legs waxed, and yes it hurt so badly that I now refuse to go, and just shave instead. I was told that hair had to be a 1/4 inch in order for it to get waxed. Go at least once before you get it done for your wedding because it is possible to have a reaction to it. Get it done by someone because 1) they make it less painful 2) it's quicker and 3) if it is really painful you'll probably be afraid to continue with it.

I don't know about legs, but I get my eyebrows done and that's about all the pain I care to endure. Shaving or Nairing works for me. Nairing seems to keep the stubbles down longer and the hairs grow back a bit softer too.

Hi mar - please do a search of this topic. It was discussed in depth about the dangers of the cream used before the procedure.

OWWWWWWWW!!!

I get my eyebrows waxed... that's more than enough pain for me. I'll stick to shaving.

I've tried Nair before. It did nothing but burn. It didn't thin or remove any hair.

Actually, I think that thread was about laser hair removal.

Maroki, waxing shouldn't be dangerous to you, but it can be painful--and exactly how painful will totally depend on your own tolerance for pain. But you're ripping hairs out by the roots, over a decently large area...so figure yeah, it's gonna hurt.

Maroki - I wax my legs (and eyebrows)myself! I love it, I wouldn't do it any other way. The first time you wax, it's faily uncomfortable, but mostly because you don't really know what to expect. It's really easy for me to do now. I use the pre-waxed double sided strips that you can buy at the drugstore, not hot wax. I use Sally Hansen for my eyebrows and Moujan 2000 for my legs. It's soooo easy - just rub a strip between your hands for a few seconds to warm it, peel it apart, rub it down firmly on your skin in the direction of the hair growth, and pull it off quickly in the opposite direction. I just did it about 2 weeks ago, and am still completely smooth. Took about 15 minutes total to both lower legs. It usually lasts about a month for me before I see any traces of regrowth. The Sally Hansen strips for face can be cut to shape for your eyebrows too, which is really cool. I persoanlly get a lot of benefits out of waxing. One, of course is not having to shave my legs or pluck my eyebrows on a regular basis. Two - the waxing process also exfoliates your skin. Three - The hair grows in a lot finer, so even though I have to wait for the hair to get long enough to wax again, its so fine and thin, you can barely see it unless you are looking for it, and it never feels prickly like shaving regrowth usually does. Four - and this is the biggest benefit IMO - less hair grows back every time I wax! I think if you keep yanking the root of the hair out, eventually it just gives up and doesn't grow back at all. I love it! There is no way I could ever go back to shaving my legs. As far as how long to grow the hair before you can wax - I think for the initial treatment you do have to let it get to about 1/4 inch because the hair is so tough. Subsequent waxings can be shorter when the hair is much finer - I think mine is probably more like 1/8 inch when I wax now.

Now, bikini waxing is another thing - OUCH!!!

Remember the episode on Friends, where Monica ordered the special"PainFree Tropical Paradise Hair Removal Jelly?" She and Phoebe each 'sugared down" the other one because it was too painful to do to themselves...

I also get my eyebrows waxed (I think I forgot to mention that in my first post). The eyebrows I have absolutely no problem with, but the legs I honestly cannot do anymore, as I already mentioned.

Yes, Wynelle - I remember that episode, and I hardly even watched that show when it was on the air. I remember them all being locked in the room at the end of the episode when Ross and Rachel were having that huge breakup fight. I believe that Joey (and may be the rest of them) ended up eating the wax because they were so hungry.

Back to the original subject - I've never had my legs waxed, but I do go for eyebrow waxing, and I don't think it hurts at all. It hurt a little the very first time, but I think it was more because I didn't know what to expect and was fed a lot of horror stories.

I remember the ep wynelle! So funny. I think they were locked in the bedroom because Ross and Rachel were breaking up in the living room. (Wow, I sound like a total Friends geek. If Star Trek fans are Trekkies, what are Friends fans - Frenzies???)

I actually tried sugar waxing (Nad's) and hot wax, and it was just too hard to manage. If you don't have the exact right amount of wax on, it just doesn't work and leaves a mess. And then you have to contend with the cloth strip thingies that fray and shred, and you have to wash and dry them... That's what I like about the pre-waxed strips, they already have the perfect amount on the strips, and you just throw them away after you use them - and they generally cost about $6/box.

Ok so it sounds painful...but I have a pretty high pain tolerance so I'll probably try it. My next question is...what do you wear to go and get your legs waxed? Just like a bikini bottom or something? And do they go all the way up on your legs?

I don't know ladies... I have a hard enough time with my eyebrows. If I could maybe share with you my "secret" for red bumps when shaving legs and ummm... around other areas?

What I've found is if you use a new razor blade every few days, and if you loofah the area with a cream soap (like Olay Body Wash) bumps do not appear. Use a circular motion in the area and be sure to shave in the direction of the hair growth. I haven't had red bumps or an ingrown hair anywhere since I've started doing this. I've also found that I don't have to shave as often which is nice.

Just a suggestion as maybe something to try before you put yourself through this...

maroki, most places I know have you choose what you want waxed....lower leg which is to just above the knee, or full leg. If you just want lower leg than wear shorts, otherwise yes wear a bikini bottom.

Ok....now what about facial waxing? I know that sounds weird...and no I'm not hairy. There is just that short tiny fuzz on my face that bugs me and I think my face might seem more healthy? I don't know

In general I don't think the sort of soft, pale fuzz that many people have on their faces (like around the jaw line) is noticeable, because its usually so pale. The only time I heard of facial waxing if for upper lip (some women have longer, darker hair that is visible there) and eyebrows (which I've done--quick, not too painful). If you've done any waxing anywhere, or had other types of beauty treatments (like facials), you might ask the person or salon you've used for a recommendation.

i dont thing you need to wax the "peach fuzz" off your face. My ex best friend used to wax her whole face, yes i did say whole face. I thought it was the weirdest thing but for her, she had more than just peach fuzz. Some of the fuzz on her face was dark and i mean black hair. Unless your face fuzz is like this, i wouldnt get it done, it just looks weird.

I use that one hair remover with the rotating disks. Its like having a bunch of tweezers. Ive used it on my arm only. It works pretty good and after about a minute of it, i think my arm start to get numb and i cant feel any pain anymore lol but i do wax my eyebrows and upper lip and ya after a while you get less hair and its a lot finer.

Now if you wanna know about brazilian, thats a different story. I'll share that experience if anyone is interested.

Yeah, unless you've got the sideburns like Ashanti, peach fuzz shouldn't be waxed off.

OMG - Ashanti's sideburns bug me! Okay well, Ashanti bugs me in general, but especially the sideburns. What is up with that??? LOL

As far as the 'fuzz' goes, I would not recommend waxing, it can be really harsh on sensitive facial skin. The first time I waxed my eyebrows, I got little pimply things a day or two later, and once those went away, I got all these litte dry spots where the little pimpley things were. I can imagine this would happen all over your face the first time, and that would not be good. There is a process called 'threading' that a lot of people use for that fine facial hair that a lot of people get - I know of 2 ladies who get this done, but I don't have any personal experience with it. Here is a little info I found on the web: http://www.geocities.com/facialthrea...threading.html

Everyone keeps talking about brazilian. I don't know what that is, but I assume it means going totally bare. (Am I right?) That's got to be painful! I think if I was doing that I would have to do the electrolysis thing. At least once it's done, you don't have to do it again every month. My biggest problem (with the waxing), though, would be getting up the nerve to have a stranger do it. And, there's no chance I could do that myself.

**************************************************

posted by feb-bride

Yes, Lizbet, it is going totally bare "down there." Sorry, but no one could pay me enough to do that.

posted by Shaks18

It wasnt that bad (brazilian) I've gone twice and its pretty tolerable and only took 15 minutes. After all the poking we go through during our yearly "checkup" i figured brazilian would be less uncomfortable and it was.

The reaction from your SO makes it all worth it. lol

Maybe I'm weird, but I think a "bare" crotch looks like a little girl's crotch.

Well then I'm weird too - too childlike for my taste and my husbands. He can deal with the landing strip!

It almost seems perverted in a way, but this is just my opinion. Disclaimer: I am not judging anyone who chooses to go bare.

Completely bare isn't for me either - yeah, I tried it once! Definitely not for me! I agree with the 'litte girl' comment too. And pair that with my curvy hips and it looks even more rediculous!

I totally understand the child-like thing, i felt weird at first too, but it did feel cleaner there (tmi, i know). but again, i wont do this on a regular basis.

I'm with ya. I prefer being bare. My FH could care less. I'm just anti body hair. I keep my armpits shaven everyday or every other day. My leg hairs don't grow very fast fortunately. I'm fair haired and skinned so I don't have to keep up too much. Just my eye brows. They're very Russian
