i had THE dress picked out for forever. then the usa stopped carrying the maker's dresses, and the only way i can order it is off the internet. being pretty naturally skeptical of internet buys, i have not been eager to purchase a gown w/out trying it on, etc. the dress is white, and while very simple, definitely has a ballgown sillouette (sp?). i have since decided, based on my desire to have a pretty low-key garden wedding, that the dress is probaly waay too formal. (i also want to go barefoot, but what's the point, if they are swallowed in a sheath of satin! hehe).. next consideration... i am very, very fair, w/ very dark hair, and alas <sigh> freckles (face, shoulders, arms). do ivory dresses really look better on fair brides? or can she pull off white? (the only time i tried on gowns was last summer when i was just sort of investigating [pre-engagement] and i had a bit of summer color to me, so the glare might not have been as obvious, and i didn't try on ivory, as it never occurred to me). now that i am beginning to re-shape my idea of what THE gown might be, i am wondering what the verdict is on ivory vs white before i do my next dress rehearsal (pun intended!). also, my wedding will be in springtime, so i probably wouldn't have gained a lot of tan by then (not that i don't just mostly freckle more anyway!).... what are other's ideas?

it's silhouette...

there are two shades of white -- bright white, which looks blueish, and diamond white, which is sometimes referred to as ivory -- and several of ivory, and they all vary by manufacturer. So really, you won't know until you start trying on dresses.

My advice? Go to David's, even if it's just to familiarize yourself with the variety of whites & ivories, the difference in fabrics, etc.

sheesh...and i call myslef a real speller... i second guessed on the 'h' and took it out!! lol, not that it matters. y'all are lucky if i check over my post to fix typing-too-fast errors!
back to subject... yeah, i will be going w/ my sisters next weekend...i actually just saw in a bridal mag a new line of david's gowns, and i really liked some of them... they definitely had the sillHouette (!)i think would be more appropriate for wedding...
hey, rose... since i'm one-on-oneing w/ you today... if i am having a garden wedding, but it's late afternoon, does that imply a bit more formality, or does that not really factor? (if you remember [or ever saw] my post from before, the reception will most likely be off-site at an actual hall, gallery, hotel, etc--does that also potentially dress it up?) or do neither of these matter?

Clairon - I am also very fair skinned with dark brown (alomst black) hair. In my bio pic I had highlights and a tan, so that's not really an accurate representation! I found that whether you look better in ivory or white depends more on the tone of your skin, not the fairness or darkness so much. I have cool undertones in my skin, more rosy undertones. The white or diamond white (my Maggie Sottero diamond white looks like regular white unless you put it next to a bright white dress.) looks better on me. If I wear ivory or cream colored clothes or dresses, I look kind of sick. As pale people, we are not actually WHITE, we are kind of ivory/creamy colored ourselves, so I think the ivory doesn't offer much contrast and you end up blending in with the dress. At least that is what I have found in my case. I personally think ivory looks beautiful on darker or warm toned skin, and with cool undertones, even if you are very fair, I think the soft white looks best.

I am very pale with very dark brown hair and very dark brown eyes. I've found that ivory makes me look yellow and sick, while white looks awesome. I also have the cool type colouring. Doesn't really sound like white should work on me (you'd think white would blend in with white) but it does look nice.
So I agree with bebe.

I am also fair with dark hair. I opted for a antique gold dress. The white and ivory washed me out. The white was just aweful!!! I suggest trying different colors and shades to find what suits you best! Good luck!

I just do not feel comfortable in white...I don't even wear white t shirts or blouses. I chose an ivory corseted gown with lilac detailing. It's all personal preference and what makes you feel pretty. Just keep trying them on....you'll know it when you see it.

I agree with all you girls... and MY gown was diamond white.

Clairon, I think you need to decide the formality of your gown according to your taste, personality and the type of wedding you want to have. YOU & FH set the tone by the things you choose: invitations, location, decorations, clothes you'll wear, things you do during the wedding ceremony & reception. I think I might've been inclined to choose a less elegant gown if my Honey had chosen to wear a suit instead of a morning coat; he picked his outfit first. Who knows? I might've chosen the same dress regardless...

Go look at dresses with an open mind (stay AWAY from tulle! LOL ) and see what takes your breath away when you look in the mirror.

When I went in to try on dresses, I thought that I would only really like the white dresses. I had no intention of even trying on ivory or cream colored dresses. The girl at David's wanted me to try on a smaller size (whew! better than larger!) but they only had it in the ivory with rum pink, and that is the exact dress that I ended up getting! Just try them ALL on! You just never know!

labeadel, sounds like you and I may have the same dress. I had the same thing happen. I wanted to try on the dress in white, but the one in my size was the 2-tone, and I fell in love!

It's from David's Bridal, halter, very beaded... Yours?

Mine from DB, but it's not a halter. http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridal_g...7&prodgroup=10 That's mine, but the under skirt and top of the dress are light ivory, and the over skirt is the rum pink. The "alternative view" shows the all ivory one. They don't have a pic of the 2-tone online.

I like that dress too! I think I even tried that one on! my dress is http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridal_g...7&prodgroup=10

This isn't a very good view of the dress. It has a rum pink satin edge around the skirt and then it ruffles down the back into the train.

labeadel, VERY NICE!! The alternate view shows the dress from the back in all white, so I got an idea of what it's like.

Labeadel, we ahve the same dress, but mine is the white version. I tried on half a dozen dresses that day and that one was the second one. hey only had the Ivory and rum pink in my size and I loved it. I am tan and it went so well with my skin tone. But I ordered it in white. It jsut seemed more me. Are you going to have a bustle? Have you seen it pulled back into the bustle? Ifso isn't it beautiful? I am so excited!

That's so cool Lilianevii!

Yeah, those ruffles down the back are what sold me! (Well, the beading sold me too) It will be a beautiful bustle! I haven't actually seen it bustled yet, just when my lady at DB did it for me with her hands. I love the dress and can't wait to wear it! I go in for my first fitting in late June. I know it's a little early for an October wedding, but it's when my parents will be visiting and I wanted to do my first fitting with my mom.
