Default Invitations

If invitations have been sent out already and the date to RSVP by hasn't expired, is it appropriate to send an email asking the invitees to please respond soon?

Well, no, not really

People are going to think you are running an "A" List/"B" List kind of thing, so you can invite more guests.

Is there some important need to know this information in advance?

I wouldn't send an email until the weekend AFTER your RSVP date either.

I personally called all those that didn't RSVP to ensure they had recieved our invite and ask if they would be attending.

You should wait until after the RSVP has expired, or even the day of. But sending an email in advance might make your guests say "Geez!"
