Did any of you have a problem getting to look you want for your wedding?

I've been trying out my wedding make-up today, I went for a subtle look. In the flesh it looks like I'm wearing make-up but it's subtle enough to get away with in the day time. I've gone for a look somewhere between natural & night. The problem I'm having is tha I took some pics to see how it'll look on film & I think it looks too subtle. I normally wear more dramatic make-up than this, strong dark eyes...

The dilema is; if I do strong enough eyes for them to show up on film I'd look overdone to my guests, if I look nicely done to my guests it's going to be really subtle on camera.

Do you think I should go for the more subtle look on film? What I'm thinking is that although I prefer dark dramatic eyes now I'm going to be looking at these photos forever so maybe I'm as well going for pretty & natural...

I'll let you see the pics so you can judge, but bear in mind it looks more 'made up' in the flesh.

That definitely looks very natural. I say go for what you feel is your best look. If dramatic eyes are your signature look, I don't see any reason NOT to do it, just as long as it's not something you're going to look back on in 10 or 20 years and be like, oh, that was god awful! But I think a dark, smokey eye and a neutral lip is always considered a classic look for evening dress. And, remember, even that is a very close-up picture. If you feel you want more of a "pop" in your photos, something more done up would be nice. My first wedding I never gave the make-up any thought, so I just wore my normal neutral look which didn't look like I had make-up at all. And I felt I looked very washed out looking with a pale face and a pale dress. You look gorgeous in those photos, but if it's not "you," then I say go for your done up look.

Ann - I think it looks great just like this! I say if you like a stronger eye, you should go for it. It's best to pick a feature to make strong, and then go lighter on the others. If you do a strong eye, go light on the lips, or vice versa. Have you considered wearing lashes? Lashes can give you a stronger/darker eye without looking like you are wearing tons of makeup. The one thing you want to avoid is doing anything trendy or using any trendy colors. My cousin who was married in the 80's is wearing the most horrid teal and pink eyeshadow WAY up to her eyebrows, poor thing. She hates her wedding pics. Dark or light, if you have a classic look and classic colors, you will love looking at your pictures years from now.

My SIL has wedding photos like that too! Her's was a lurid orange & it met up with her 80's never-been-plucked brows (like Madonna had back then) She doesn't have any the close ups on show, poor thing.

I've never tried false lashes, have you worn them? Well, I did try to put them on once when I was about 18 & it was just one big sticky mess But I have more patience now! If you've worn them did you do the individual lashes or the strips? Anyone else worn them? Are they comfortable? Did they fall of? Any particular brand work well for you?

I think I'll try out darker eyes & take some more pics.

You're all going to be *so* sick of seeing my face by time I've got it right!

I have always liked the look of false lashes, so I just bought some last week! Maybelline just came out with a kit. They actually suggest individual lashes. The only individual ones I have seen are in a 'flare' style, which I don't like. So I bought the Maybelline demi-strip lashes and cut them into litte individual 'clumps' and used those. I wore them on Sunday, and I LOVED them. Getting them on was mildly tricky, but I think if I did it a few days in a row, I would totally get the hang of it. I just used a few at the outer corners of my eyes. My friend Monica uses the full strip lashes, and they look great on her, I just think it's way too much on me. I think you would have to try both to know. I would just go buy the full strips, try them, and if you don't like them, cut them apart and try it the other way. Also, the lashes are supposed to be glued to the base of your own lashes, not to your actual eyelid. The first few times I tried lashes years ago, I thought they were supposed to go on your eyelid at the base of your lashes and it looked CRAZY!

So you kind of stick them TO your eyelashes? Or am I not getting that? Do they rip out your lashes when you take them off?

And, Ann, we'll never get sick of your face!! Looking forward to seeing the dark-eye look!

Yep, TO your eyelashes, right where they meet your eyelid, so that it is butted right up against your eyelid where the lash comes out, if that makes sense. Learning how to do this properly makes all the difference in the world! The adhesive dries more like rubber cement, so its kind of stretchy. There are probably stronger adhesives, but the one that came with the lashes gave me no discomfort when I took the lashes off and didn't pull any natural ones out. I was surprised at how easily they came off because they stayed put all day even while I was jumping around screaming at the TV (frickin' Raiders won, hate them...) I also think some brands come with adhesive remover that I think you use like regular eye makeup remover.

ETA: tweezers are essential in the application of lashes! You just can't do it with your fingers.

Ann, I would go for a little more makeup. That's just my opinion though. I'm usually a very pekid (sp?) looking person, so I hate looking pale. I would definitely go for your dark normal eyes and just keep the rest of you looking classy. The photos will wash you out a bit and those are the momentos you'll have for the rest of your life. Plus, you'll be all done up for your wedding. A little more makeup won't make you look too done up, IMO. Hope this wasn't too much rambling. Only had 3 hours of sleep last night!

Well it definately looks like I'm wearing more make-up face to face, FH came home & imediately asked 'what are you all made up for?' That was before I even tried out the darker eyes!
Really it was coz he knew I had a day off today & don't normally bother with make-up in the house.

Anyway I decide to make the most of my day off & try out the darker look too... It looks really dark in the mirror but not too much in the photos, see for yourself...

Well to keep the look seperate, or let you know when I'd normally used them the first is 'meeting the FMIL' (where I try to look like butter wouldn't melt in my mouth!
The second one is 'going out on the tiles' where I'd be all dressed up & going into town with FH.
There are a few in the middle that I've not done... they'd be 'working in the bar' 'special occasion' & 'everyday'. I'm leaning towards the 'going out' look, what do you think?

I like both and I think either would look great. To me it looks like you don't have any make up on at all in the first pics. I think that maybe something in between would be perfect.

I think this look looks great. Remember, your pics won't be this close up either. Can you take a couple from a distance to get a good idea of how pics will turn out? Also, remember your lighting the "day of" will be different than inside your house. You want to take that into account when you're doing your makeup as well.

It was coz I was trying to hold the camera at arms length! Didn't want anyone to know I was vain enough to be taking photos of myself! Ahem.

Thanks for all your advice everyone! I'll need to get some of those lashes to try out. I'll let you know how it goes...

I really liked the smokey eye look better for the wedding. Your green eyes really popped out (in a good way, those green eyes are just beautiful) If you go too natural, you will look pallid and even "sickly" in the photographs.

You can always use a light toner to remove the heavier stuff between wedding and reception if you think it will look too heavy in person.

I agree with Wynelle. I like the darker eyes better. The natural look doesn't look bad by any means, I just think that the darker eyes looks more 'classy' and 'dressy'. Plus, I doubt they would even look that dark from a lot further away, so if you like that look up close you may have to go even darker to the same effect from further away.

I agree, go with a smokey tone so it can bring out your eyes, then your makeup wont get all the attention.

I agree completely! You look GORGEOUS--your green eyes totally pop. I don't think it's overdone at all.

Aw shucks

Thanks everyone! I guess the other point is if I didn't do the dark eyes for the photo I'd probably want to re-do them for the evening reception, because the room'll be pretty dark by then (I mean just the wall lights & the lighting the band provides) So I'd look like a wee ghost in the corner So this way I'll not have to leave my guests sitting about while I go 'fix my face'.

Thanks again for your help
