I have been browsing and browsing favor ideas and I am having a hard time coming up with an idea I really like.

I would like to give something that can be used or appreciated...not just another *thing* that no one knows where to put or something they already have a million of.

I am crafty and can make something...any ideas?

I just did simple vanilla (white) votive candles wrapped in white tulle with a white ribbon. My colors were black, white and silver. One for each place setting. I bought everything at The Christmas Tree Shoppe and spent about $100 on 200 favors.

Something that can be consumed is always nice, because it isn't "knicknacks" to be stuck somewhere or eventually thrown away. Candles, cookies, candies (this can be something more creative than the standard Jordan almonds in tulle, altho I happen to like Jordan almonds), mixes for mulled wine/cider or hot chocolate; that type of thing falls into "consumable". Useful or keepsake items like frames, Christmas ornaments, sun catchers (window ornaments), pens, etc. can be good too, if they aren't overly cheap-looking or tacky.

As far as crafty, browse your bookstore or library, there are lots of books on wedding DIY that include favor ideas. Maybe make or decorate your own photo frames, rather than pay too much for those plastic-y fake silver ones (or WAY too much for real silver ones)? Bake your own cookies. Make small decorative tiles if you're good with clay. Are you having a theme?

I'm kitchen, not craft, so I don't have very creative ideas myself, but I'm sure some others do, and there are lots of books & magazines around.

Edit: try to use either something simple/classic or something very personal, and more people will appreciate or remember it. Honestly, I think a lot of wedding attendees don't really remember the favors much, so unless it's really important to you, don't stress and slave over them, or spend too much of your budget on them.

Does your wedding have a theme? I could probably help since I'm an "idea person" according to my writing professor . I'm also crafy and putting our favors together (not really making them per say).

there was a thread recently on this subject... I gave out wildflower honey because I had a garden wedding; other great favors mentioned were TheaterDiva's sand-dollar coaster (her DH made them) for her beach-themed wedding and another bride gave out M&M's in her wedding colors.

Is there some sort of "theme" to your wedding? Some cute story about you two as a couple that can be represented by your wedding favor? My new SIL gave out fortune cookie shaped placecard holders as favors because BIL proposed by writing "will you marry me?" on a piece of paper he then slipped inside a fortune cookie. Everyone at the wedding was familiar with the story, so it was cute AND personal.

I don't have a 'theme' but more of a scheme...cornflower blue is the color and we will be holding our reception at a lakeside hotel.

Idea: bookmarks with a favorite Scripture on love? These sound like they can be easy to but can be made supernice.

I LOVE favors that are useable or edible! I really don't like those fluffy tulle wrapped things that are just meant to sit on a shelf and collect dust. Of the weddings we went to last year, these are the favors I remember: 2 chocolate truffles in a god box wrapped in gold(ish) tulle with a 'thank you' tag attached. Candy and boxes purchased from See's and the bride added the wrapping and card herself. They were delicious, and looked very pretty on the table at each place setting. At my sisters wedding they handed out these little miniature books of love poetry in a tiny gift bag with a thank you attached. At another wedding they had small mesh drawstring bags with 5 or 6 wine charms inside. We loved this one, we have a full bar at home and love to have friends over so these are super useful for us. The last favor that I can remember is a mixed CD that the bride put together herself. We are doing CD's as well! There are tons of places that can do them for you, but we are doing them ourselves. FH is a musician so he has all the software for editing and mixing, and we both have CD burners on our computers so we will be doing it all ourselves, even the labels and sleeves. FH was in a band when we met at one of his shows, so music has been a big part of our relationship, so we felt this was appropriate for us! We have estimated the favors will cost us about $240.

I like the bookmark idea, but if you have anyone who is sqeamish about religion, scripture might not be the best choice, unless using it is particularly important to you. There are lots of secular quotes and poetry on love that could work as well. But if you really want scripture passages, use them. As a bookworm and quote addict, though, I love this idea.

How about song lyrics? We used a line from our introduction song (theme from Queer Eye) on the invitations and the web site:

You came into my life
And the world never looked so bright
...All things just keep betting better

Maybe you can use a line from your first dance song also.

I like the bookmark idea also! I personally would suggest something secular like NovemberGal said. I'm not religious, which is why I suggest that.

I am thinking of doing lottery tickets at our wedding. You buy some scratch off lottery tickets and put them in cute glassine envelopes with a penny from the year you are getting married.

I suggest if you do something like chocolate (or anything edible), make it chocolate, or something else, that people don't eat everyday. I would choose something like Ghiradelli, or something regional.

I was also thinking of something homemade, maybe like jam or jelly in cute little jars? I don't know if you are having a summertime or spring wedding, but those colors and the location remind me of when we used to take family vacations and pick berries and then make jelly from them. If you know how or have a family member that knows how to do it, that would make it a lot easier...and you could make personalized wedding labels, with name/date/etc. on it, and even a message?
