Default name change

I know this has been discussed and I tried the search feature and could not find anything.

Where do I have to change my name now and in what order do I do it in? If people ask I am using my new last name. The thing is... nothing legal has been changed yet. I just requested the form through SS which will take 2 weeks to get to me. Not to mention I am sure it will take weeks and weeks to get it processed and get a new card to me. I checked about changing my Drivers Licence and I need my new SS card to do that. I am sure the rest of the places need my SS card and/or DL to change my name there??

Didn't realize that I would not me using my new name for a couple of months after I am married.

What did everyone else do? I guess I was supposed to plan for this before the wedding?? I just did not have anymore room in my head for something new back then.

I am kinda bummed.

I have no suggestions- haven't had to do that yet.

But thank you... I have to put that on my list of things to do- didn't even think about that one yet.

You can get the form from www.ssa.gov

Meanwhile, you can take your marriage certificate and go get your DL changed. Your credit cards should let you fax either the marriage certificate or a copy of your DL as proof of the name change.

Here is the exact link from SS: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.html

Just re-read your post and realized that your DL office requires the new SS card to issue a new license. When you take the SSA form to the SS office, they give you a paper stating that the new card has been ordered in the new name. My DL office allowed me to use this, my old DL, and my marriage cert as proof.

I'm just here to second whiddle's post. I printed the form online for SSA and took it (filled out) to my local office...I had my card about a week after that...I used a copy of my marriage certificate for everything else..I'd say within two weeks I had everything changed and new credit cards.

Yes, you must do the SS first, and then you DL, and then everything else. You don't even have to go to the SS office, just mail it to them (the address should be in your phone book) with your marriage license and DL or Passport (I used passport so I didn't have to give up my DL for a week or two).

You'll need to go to the DMV for the DL change, which you can't do until after the SS change. They check the SS records to make sure that it matches what you are trying to change your name to.

Then you can do everything else. There are still some things that I haven't gotten around to changing. All of my credit cards did it over the phone, and I went into the bank to change it with them.

Yeah, I've gotten my DL and SS changed, and some cards. There are others I need to get to though. When we got our marriage license they gave us a packet for SS so I already had the form. Plus, the office is like 30 minutes from me, so I went in person. And they do give you a letter to use in the meantime saying that your new card is on the way.

It's really just a see-how-it-goes with different places. Some want to see my DL, other's the ML, and some haven't asked to see anything at all. It's a big ol' pain in the butt. Lol.

It has been just over a year since I was married and I still have not changed my name. I didn't have a clue where to begin either and haven't made an effort to do so. It is definitly on my list of to dos. I know that I have seen some where on a site a bridal name change kit...not sure where...I'll have to go search and post it here, it may be helpful

I've changed my name on pretty much everything except my airline mileage accounts. I did my SS card first, where they gave me a letter stating that I had applied for a card in my new name and it was on its way. I sent in my passport (with a copy of my marriage cert.) and it should be back in about 2 months.....and I changed my DL from out of state to in-state and changed my name as well. They actually didn't need my new SS card for this, only to see the marriage certificate. And I changed all my banking stuff with old ID (passport before I sent it away) and my marriage certificate.

It went much more smoothly than I expected.

Hey Indigo.....I just got married Sat. and had my DL changed on Monday...all Washington county required was your old DL and you fill out the form with your new name, old name, new address, old address (if applicable) and sign it...they did not require my new SS card, I sent in the SS form that came with my marriage license (Dodge county had all the paperwork in a pamphlet that we needed to change.) Good luck. Any questions PM me and I'll try to answer.

Thanks Justinmary. I would try but I'm really afraid of spending two hours at the DMV, with my screaming 3 year old who wants to run around, only to find out the crabby old ladies at the counter will not do it without my new SS card.

Call them first!!!! That way you can find out if they would do it, with the certificate, or go online you might find a lot of info in their website. At least the one for VA has a lot of information.

I have tried to call the DMV before. I think I would rather shove bamboo shoots under my fingernails

I did check the website, however, and it said that I needed my new SS card. The pp who also lives in WI (different Co) did not need it. So it's a big ?? I think I will just wait and have all of the documents.

Thanks everyone.

I don't remember needing the actual card, just that before they issue you the new one, they will verify it with SS before you get your license. But I'm in CA, which is very different from most of the other states.

We can access our DMV and the requirements online... just a thought. Then when you actually need to go, make an appt.
Every time I've made an appt. I've been in and out within 20 minutes. That's with less than 3 minutes standing in the appt line. It's grand, and the only way to go

I did my DL before I did SS. It may be different everywhere you go. All I needed was the ML to showthe name change.
