Favors are small trinket gifts for the guests attending the reception. They can range from useless ribbons with the names of the bride and groom embossed on them to sweet treats wrapped up or boxed cute to bottles of wine. They are not a necessity at a reception, but they're very commonplace here in the US. You could certainly have a great reception without them.

Favors are optional and if couples are on a tight budget or just don't want to deal with them, they omit them. I am seeing individually wrapped cookies quite often as favors, as well as truffles and other candy.

Favors are a nice little way that the couple can thank the guests for attending their wedding, even if it's just with some chocolates or picture frames.
