I have...*DUN DUN DUN*
toenail fungus

why me? I can't seem to get rid of it. It's the pinky toe of my left foot. I can hide it with shoes, sure but who wants a toenail that looks like that? I'd tried over-the-counter crap. No go. I went to my dermotologist and he prescribed Penlac, which is a clear lacquer. I'm halfway done with the bottle and it looks worse than ever...and my big toenails are turning yellow. I look *so* disgusting without shoes I could cry. I'm a big time Florida girl. I wear open-toes a lot so this can't stay this way. Anyone got any sure-fire tips? I've also tried tea-tree oil, but not religiously.

How about Lamisil? I don't know if it works but I always see comercials for it. The one with that little guy that really freaks me out when he lifts up the toenail! Blah!

Ew, me too! I cringe every time I see that commercial.
My Mom used to soak her toes in white vinegar and it helped a lot.... Dr recommended.

I have heard that the only thing that really gets rid of the stuff for good the the priscription pills that work from the inside. Maybe that is Lamisil? I don't know - those commercials freak me out too, I stop watching when it comes on - when he pulls the nail up *crinnnnnnnge* cuz who hasn't accidentally lifted a toenail a bit - it hurts like a mother!!!
Don't worry about it girl - it's a lot more common than you think!

What sucks is that my insurance doesn't cover either prescription. So I paid like $100 for this bottle of nail polish and Lamisil runs about the same. I just don't have it. Maybe after my financial aid comes through, the leftovers... I can't have these feet. They're not mine

Wait, I thought that Lamisil was over the counter. Am I wrong? I am sure though that if this dr prescribed stuff isn't working, then you will definitely need another prescription. Sorry!

I have a friend who also has toenail fungus, and she just says that she has to have polish on it constantly. Can you paint your nails to cover it up?

nah, Lamisil is a prescription and should only be used by someone in good health, as it's been known to affect the liver. I think I could handle it...I hope heheh

yeah but lamisil is rarely covered by insurance because it can cause liver damage and it is like 150 for 1 bottle... yeah i admit it, i have the funk toe too. my big toe left foot, but it hasn't spread (which it can do) i just put a fake nail on it during the summer and keep them painted. during the winter it doesn't bother me.

It's true that only oral medications are a surefire way to kill toenail or fingernail fungus. Sporanox or Lamisil is what we use generally. (I am a doctor.) It usually takes 3 months of daily medication to cure the toenail fungus. Even then, the part of the toenail that is infected and tends to look ugly never clears up. The toenail has to grow out. The new toenail that grows in is clear though. Therefore, you have to let the infected part grow out and cut it off as the new, clear toenail grows in. These meds are quite expensive and for toenails you have to use them daily for 3 months straight (generally 6 weeks for fingernails.) Usually, your doctor will check your liver enzymes prior to starting either of these meds, and at the 6 week point to ensure your liver is still okay. They can make your liver secrete more enzymes than usual. Penlac usually doesn't work for toenails from my personal experience in prescribing it. Hope this helps some.

Can you ask your doctor for samples of the Lamisil until you can afford to buy it? Sometimes they can give you like a one month supply. Everytime I read this post, I think of that little guy crawling under your toenail and pitching a tent!

I don't know how long I've been using this crap, but it's been over 3 months :/ But I was screwing up once in a while and missing a day here and there, so maybe that's why.
That little guy is building condos or somethin' under my nail.

I messed with my pinky toes for years, before I found out that it was a fungus. They'd get hard & clumpy. I finally went to a PODIATRIST, who cut them out. It took about a week before I could wear regular shoes but it was worth it.
