Wedding Herbs?
Has anyone heard of/used wedding herbs instead of rice/flower petals/bird seed at at a wedding?
I was looking into favors for our housewarming/engagement/end-of-sumer/birthday party, thinking mini herb gardens might be nice, and I stumbled across a few articles about Rosemary and weddings... then from there I stumbled on to a few websites that sold "wedding herbs" for tossing at the bride and groom... they had a few different mixtures with different herbs and florals...
Has anyone experienced this? I personally LOVE rosemary, but I'm worried so much of it (or other herbs/florals) would be overpowering. Do you think clean-up would be necessary for an outdoor wedding?
Do you think I could make the mixture myself (there's an AMish store in town that sells bulk herbs) or do you think they specially preserve the ones they sell online?
Thanks!

A couple of weeks ago we were making breakfast and DH tried to open the bag of baby spinach and instead of just opening the top, the entire bag ripped open and leaves flew everywhere. I was standing there laughing at him but then looked down and thought to myself that it would look so pretty to drop baby spinach leaves instead of or in addition to flower petals. I think it would be fun and different to use herbs!

There is an herb place here in LA that you could go in and make your own mixture. I've also ordered from this place online and really liked them. http://www.sfherb.com/ Sounds like a cute idea, I think.

I have heard of it! I think it would be wonderful. We used fresh herbs in our arrangements and everyone said the church smelled heavenly. GO FOR IT GIRL!

we're actually doing a rosemary pin on everyone. My moms florist is putting it together and shipping it to us. In germany every person gets a piece of greenery pinned on them (im not sure why... they just do). Girls on the right, men on the left. So we're gonna do that with a pretty rosemary thing... really small but nice touch.
I like you're idea though a lot!

Oh, I like the rosemary pin idea - I had never heard of that German tradition before. Thanks!

Parsley, sage rosemary and thyme
Different herbs stand for different things...
like Rosemary for remembrance
I think it would be great to have a custom made blend for throwing, and as favors, in little clear plastic boxes, with a tie-tag explaining what each herb means. Especially if you can make a little poem about it.
ETA: certain herbs are called "creepers" or "creeping" as part of the name. They are usually small leaved and designed to be planted between the pavers in a pathway/walkway. They release a lovely fragrance when stepped on. So that might work a little bit better than baby spinach. hee,hee

I like the idea about having poems to describe what the different herbs mean. I was thinking of having herbs myself but unfortunately because of allergies I cannot. I would suggest finding out if anyone is sensitive to strong smells or to certain herbs.

I'm thinking this would be a great theme for a wedding. You could buy the tossing herbal mix. Pot herbs for centerpieces or favors and have different ones on each table... then name the tables after the meaning beind the herb.

Great idea!
What a fabulous idea! I had considered potpourri for my wedding but never thought of herbs. Some wedding places have restrictions on what you can toss. Bird seed for instance is sometimes banned because of the chance of it sprouting. I can't see any problems with herbs though. Go for it!

We are considering doing rosemarie potted centerpieces that will double as gifts!!! I just have not figured out how to tie in my gold and white reception theme... We are not exactly having a rustic theme... but we both love fresh herbs (we have a huge herb garden). Mint is also a good option... I need to research which hold up better in the winter since we are getting married in October. I don't know, I change my decision about my centerpieces every week!!! At least I still have time.

I like the whole wedding theme idea. That would be cool. You could grow all the herbs yourself and it would smell amazing. But if wonder if it would make a lot of people hungry?

Martha- I live about 5 hours west of you in northeast Georgia. I planted oregano, basil and three types of mint in mid-March this year. The are still going strong--my side yard is buzzing with bees coming to pollinate the flowers on the mint and basil plant. Both smell wonderful- I cut 15-20 stems every other day to put around the house. So both should work for you in Charleston.

I have a great herb garden as well, rosemary, mint basil, thyme, and a few others that are not doing so hot... We have like 2 weeks of winter, and my herbs have lasted through everytime. I think it is a great idea... but maybe more for potted plants around the room... I change my mind about centerpieces every week!!

If you start early enough, you can make topiaries our of the rosemary plants and use them as centerpieces. Then you can use your wedding colors for the pots or the ribbons.

I was thinking too of having a drawing at each table to see who gets the gift... or since we are not having seating arrangements... whoever sits in the seat with the envelope taped underneath gets to bring it home... Just adding a little fun

I absolutely love lavender!! Not only does it smell great, but is is beautiful too!! Unfortunately, it would not tie in with my colors.

They don't really tie into mine either, which is why I am still thinking about of. Part of me just doesn't really care.
