I'm considering having someone do my make-up the day of my wedding. What are you all doing? Any pros and cons? If you're doing it yourself do you have any tips?

I'm having someone do my makeup (and my mom, as well as anyone else who wants it)

It's one of those few times in your life, you can justify being treated like a princess right?

I did my own makeup. If you decide to do it yourself, be sure to experiment first... even take some pictures of yourself to see how you look in the pictures.

I recommend Cover Girl products. I used the CG Outlast lipstick and it worked great for me. It dries out some people lips, and doesn't stay on for others... but I didn't have any of those problems. If you want to know how it will work for you, just try it one day!

I hired someone - but wish I hadn't. I could have done it myself much better... I would do as Margie suggests first, to try things out and to see what you can and can't do. If you really want a look that you can't do yourself, then hire someone.

My ex-sister in-law didn’t normally wear much makeup so she had a trial run with her make-up artist who did 3 different looks and we took pictures of each look. She wasn’t used to seeing herself with makeup and like all of us she thought she had flaws which no one else thought she had so she didn’t want to make a rushed decision. Therefore, she taped the pictures in her room and gave it a few days and then pulled the one she liked the least down and then gave it a few days and picked the final look. I was surprised the look she went for was not the look she initially liked. She went for the subtle but glamorous look and she even wore false eyelashes which is a big deal for her because she doesn’t even like mascara. Anyway, she looked fabulous and not fake and her pictures where wonderful. I will probably do this for my wedding because with my first wedding I got my makeup don at MAC and they used photo makeup which was made for movies which thy insisted wouldn’t look as dark in the photos as in real life. Yet, when I got the photos back I thought it didn’t look right.

I never wear makeup--or very little anyway; concealer when needed, loose powder, and lipstick. So I have NO idea what I'm doing, and I don't actually know anyone who I'd feel comfortable with asking. I went to a makeup counter and they did me up and gave me lots of tips, and I've been practicing, but I think I'm just not happy enough to want to do it myself. So I've got a trial with the makeup lady at the place I'm getting my hair done. I've seen what she's done on other folks and I like it, but I still want a trial.

So, I think it depends on what you are comfortable with. But if you get someone to do it for you (whether paid professional or a friend), do at least one test run, and give yourself time to find another option if needed!

Just adding in that I never wear makeup either. I took a friend shopping with me to pick out colors and stuff. I'm sure you know women who LOVE makeup and know all about it. Ask them to help, I'm sure they will!

I don't actually. I have been thinking about the makeup thing for my wedding too. I just wear eye makeup and lip gloss sometimes....I have never worn anything on my face. I wouldn't even know where to start!

I wear makeup regularly and decided to go into the Clinique counter at Macy's and give them a try. I went once to see what I thought the day of my bridal shower. I went again for the "trial run" 2 weeks before the wedding. I thought my makeup was great. I really loved it, and DH is not into a lot of makeup. I say get it done! It's your one day to spoil yourself. Oh, and I paid nothing to have it done. The days that I went to have it done prior, I bought stuff when I was done. The day of, they were so happy to be doing my makeup for my wedding!

I forgot to mention above that the counter I went to was Prescriptives, I like them a lot too. And like labeadel said, the counters are free!

I did my own make up. I just wanted to look like myself, not so 'done up'.

I have booked my hair salon for the morning of the wedding well for like 4 hours. They gave me a good deal since I have my hair done once a month and he is a old friend of the families. But I'm having there makeup artist do mine and my Bridal party and they are also doing are hair and a tee tree message. He has a new make-up so he wants to do trial runs. Won't be to hard since I'm in there once a month. But I like the ideal of taken pictures and seeing what ones I like better.

Thanks gals! I just ordered some of that mineral make-up so I'll play around with that and see how it goes. I normally get my make-up from Merle Norman and I've already talked to the girls there and they'll do my face for free the day of. I might go back and do a "trial" at the counter.

One word of advice I would give is do not try a brand new look the morning of the wedding. In a wedding I was in this summer the bride decided to have a make-up artist for the bridesmaids. I looked way over-done and the colors did not look natural with my skin tone. I was not comfortable with it at all. It was a disaster! Do your own makeup if you are able to. I had dark circles under my eyes that she did not even cover up. If you tend to get dark circles, this was something that came in handy before my wedding: http://hylexin.bz

Thanks! I'm thinking I'll do it myself. I've been playing around and experimenting and know exactly the look I want for the wedding. I'd be afraid of having someone do my face who doesn't know me or what I like. I may have someone do my hair though....

That's an excellent idea Chacha, thanks for that!
We took photos inside & outside to check the colour of my veil next to my dress to make sure they were a good match but I hadn't thought of doing the same for my makeup trials!

I'm gonna pinch that idea from you!
I can try out the different looks I'm thinking of & in daylight / inside... All excited now! I'm sure I'll be doing my own make up because I'd not really trust anyone else on a day that I want to look my best. Also, I've been wearing makeup almost daily since my teens, I'm pretty confident in my ablities.

The only thing I'm a little unsure of is whether I should go for a casual daytime look, my dark going to a gig look (which Mo likes best) or something more subtle & classic but still edging towards an evening look... What kind of look are the rest of you thinking of? Any pics?

I'd go with the "something more subtle & classic but still edging towards an evening look", Ann.

I agree. I think that will show up best in photos but won't look too overdone.
