I know it's not as romantic as it could be...
...but what do you think about Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line" as a first dance song? I know Tom is uncomfortable with having to look smooth and romantic, and I think this song would be fun and let him be more his goofy but sweet self without sacrificing all romance.
Whatcha think?

I say if it's what's going to make the both of you look back and smile and say "Ya, that was great" I say go for it. It's your wedding and if Tom isn't comfortable with the slow dance, romance thing....I think making it something light and funny that shows your personalities I think it's a great idea.....

Lizbet, here are the words:
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time.
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line
I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line
As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line
You've got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can't hide
For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide
Because you're mine, I walk the line
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time.
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

How would you dance to it? I love the song, but I'm trying to imagine doing anything but singing along in the car to it...

If you're both comfortable with it and love the song, go for it. If you're worried about dancing to it, you could invite the rest of the BP to join you.

Yes, if you REALLY want it, go for it. I voted no though, just b/c it really doesn't seem like a first dance to me. Just being honest.

I voted no too but then your explanation about being able to be goofy together sounded so sweet and "logical" and the words are much more romantic than I thought!! Go for it!!
I just have this great image of you providing the words for everyone, them singing along and you and Tom laughing and smiling and boogeying on the dancefloor!!!

I voted yes because I like Johnny Cash and thought it sounded okay for a first dance.
I personally like nontraditional songs for weddings. Makes it more fun and interesting.

Thanks for posting the words. I could hear the tune in my head, but couldn't come up with the lyrics.
I think it is fine for a first dance, as long as you and Tom both like it.

Now that I've the lyrics, I say go for it!
As for dancing, I'm picturing a two-step or something, since it is country.

I voted no because I think it's a very difficult song to dance to. But it is a good song!

You stole my song!
So of course I say use it! There is no rule that says your first dance has to be to some sappy love song - especially if it doesn't fit the personality of the people who are dancing. I love Johnny Cash and I think Walk the Line is an awesome song and incredibly appropriate for a wedding... It kind of restates your vows!
P.S. if your worried about how to dance to it, find someone who can teach you a two-step - I think that would go well with the song and it's pretty easy. But I would just get up there and dance, sing to each other, and have FUN!

Maggie, me too. I sort of imagine a slowish two step, not like you'd dance to zydeco or anything -- there is a very consistent beat, it's just a mid tempo -- maybe around 100 bpm. Any music people out there wanting to venture a guess?
We'd have to practice. We're terrible club dancers (and Tom will deny this), but we've been Cajun dancing and we're not too bad. I'm good if I have a step and he's pretty good at following where I prompt him to lead me, unless he gets nervous we're going to bump someone but we'll be alone, so that won't be an issue!
ETA: I'm playing it now and doing a little boogying in my office and you could totally even just do a step - touch to the bass line. In case anyone was wondering!

Aww, I love that idea. I think that's a really sweet song that is a unique choice. It'll be something that people will remember because they don't hear it often used for that. And if it means something to you, then it'll mean more than a traditional choice.

I'd say go for it! It's really important that you're both happy and comfortable.
(to be perfectly honest, after all the thought and weeks of trying to decide our first dance I can't really remeber hearing more that the first couple of lines because we were having too much of a giggle I don't know how many people are really aware of the music to their first dance on the actual night)

So, I was reading this thread...
...and i have to say I love the idea. Especially because that song is the base for my wedding vows. We're writing our own, and I wanted to go with a theme (especially since we went out to see walk the line on one of our dates and I made him promise me he wouldn't find his June Carter while he was out traveling for work. The answer to that statement was what told me i'd marry him. He simply looked at me and told me he'd already found her.)
and /scene.
So i say... go for it

After all that voting, we didn't! We danced to At Last by Etta James. I had wanted to walk down the aisle to it, but we couldn't use it because there was no cd player on site. So, we plugged it in as the first dance!
