off the wall question
I have an off the wall question for you all... My groom isn't crazy about this whole flower thing and isn't wanting to wear a boutoniere. He wants the men to have a colored handkerchief that matches the BM dresses, instead. I have never heard of this, it's just always been tradition that they do. Do the men have to have boutonieres?

My gut reaction is no! I think he came up with a creative and tasteful way to solve the problem. We forget sometimes that it's our groom's wedding too, so if he really has a problem with flowers, no sense spending time and money trying to force him into it!

Totally agree. I think it's a great idea and would look lovely.

I use to manage a tux shop, hankies have always been used here in CA.
I really like it when you use 2 hankies in different colors and fold them fun!!!
A few weeks ago my best Guy friend got married, he didn't want the whole traditional bout thing either. I bought a mini cowboy hat and glued mini flowers and ribbon to it. It was the *perfect* alternative for him!

I think the handkerchief idea is very tasteful and classy. It should look very nice.

I love the idea of the hankie instead of the bouts. It will give the guys a great little touch, and your fh even came up with the idea.

I agree too, and I think it's great that not only is he showing an interest in the plans, but coming up with ideas too!

We did this...a.) my DH didn't want to wear a flower b.) we thought it would be fun for something different and c.) our flowers were tulips and we thought too delicate for a mens jacket when they would be taking them off and putting them back on all the time. I had actually read about the suggestion in a bridal magazine...but be prepared...because I had alot of "traditionalist" say things like, "you're flowers were so lovely, why didn't you have the men wear boutonierres"....

I just wanted to let you know that since you mentioned this, I've been toying with the idea because I like it a lot. I'm going to definitely bring it up to my FH and see what he thinks!

I'm glad that he came up with that alternative instead of not wanting anything altogether. I think if the handkerchief is the same color as the BM's dresses, then i think people might actually "get" that you did no bouts on purpose and did handkerchiefs instead

Wow, that's a really good idea. I think I may mention that to my 'fancy' too. Branching off of that, do you have an idea on how you're going to fold them? OH! How about having two hankies folded together for groom, and just the one color for the groomsmen...

Interesting thought, Sapphire! I'd just try and fold them with one end sticking up. Maybe like the way you'd make a paper airplane?

Pocket squares (that's what the hanky in the breast pocket is called) are very classy.
Here's a web site on different ways to fold them http://www.neckties.com/foldinginfo.php
Just make sure that when choosing formal wear, the jacket pocket isn't stitched closed. (Some are, so make sure to check beforehand).

This is a truly "classy" idea. Especially for the "manly" men who don't want flowers any way, any shape, any form, or any size. It is also classic as well as classy. Many vintage suits and tuxes show pocket kercheifs as opposed to bouts. Good idea, guy! A great contribution and involvment in the wedding!
