Default Hugh and Elizabeth - 28 years later

This is Hugh and I, prom night in 1978

1978 - Hugh and I were friends. We used to meet at the local dances most every weekend and we had even shared a kiss or two and so, when he asked me to the prom in 1978, I said yes. In keeping with Montreal grad night tradition, after the dance, we went up to the look out point to watch the sun come up with all the other grads dressed in their finary. He asked me to go steady and I said no ...... duh! I panicked - he was 17 and I was 15 and I honestly thought he liked me just as a friend. I never saw him again after that. He moved int town to go to college and I stayed in the burbs to finish high school.

We both got married, had two kids each and ended up separated, I started a website for our highschool, Hugh signed up, I welcomed him and we started to "chat". 23 years after I last saw him, we re-met and we formed an instantaneous bond!

Skip ahead 5 years ...... we knew we were getting married, it was just a matter of timing - heck, I even had a ring and a dress. One Friday night, Hugh picked me up at work. He was dressed up and so I knew something was "up". He wouldn't tell me a thing about what his plans were.

We drove into the city and he pulled up at a top notch Montreal hotel. He told me that he had reservations for dinner. He also told me that he had tickets to see the Butterflies Go Free exhibit and I just "knew" that he was going to propose, surrounded by all the beautiful butterflies (we have a thing for butterflies!).

We had a nice meal in a fancy french restaurant and when the meal was over, he suggested that we take a walk along the main drag. We hadn't gone too far when he suggested that we turn back and go to a bar that he remembered being on the same street as the restaurant.

As we neared the restaurant, a gentleman got out of a limo and said "Mr. H?" and Hugh said "Yes, Mr. George?" With that, we got into the limosine and we were heading towards the mountain. We arrived at the look out point and Hugh suggested another walk.

There we were, the city lights twinkling and bright ..... Hugh got down on one knee and said "Twenty eight years ago I asked you to go steady on this very spot and you said no. I have another question for you tonight and I am hoping that you will say yes. Will you marry me?"

I was expecting the proposal but he still managed to surprise me and I started to bawl. What I didn't expect came next ..... he pulled a ring box out of his jacket and placed it on my other hand! I was so confused ... "what is this?" I asked.

LOL Apparently, he had bought this ring and it was meant to hold the place for the "real" ring that we would shop for together. The thing is .... the week before, we were in a mall in another city when I saw the "real" ring that I wanted. It was perfect, on sale and I wasn't about to leave the mall without it.

I was always going to receive two rings .... but not in the order that he planned for me to get them!

28 years and 2 months later, in front of family and friends I will be saying YES!!!!!!!, to the most important question of all ..... Will you take this man to be your husband?

We are having a small wedding - about 50 guests. It's going to be held in the church where we attend and the reception is to be in the church hall.

Our theme is butterflies (new beginnings, new life) and we are making all of our decorations and more. I will post more pics of our stuff as soon as I can.

In the works -

Two banners for the church (I am painting or stenciling these), three clerical stoles (I am painting or stenciling these) for our minister and two minister friends, a signature platter (LOL but of course! Hugh is painting this one and I am most impressed with his butterflies!), butterfly garland / swag, butterfly ceiling decoration (trying to do something like this only smaller + with greenery) - http://www3.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gn...7827581&size=m)

Plan to do -

Ceremony programs
Note cards featuring our butterfly photos

This is the first of our completed projects - our DIY invitations (last names and addresses removed) - cream card stock, velum, rose sheer ribbon and a dollar store scrapbook embellishment.

That is a great story!!

Chris and I have a thing for butterflies too!! We have had a few "weird" experiences with them! And we adored "Corpse Bride" and their use of the butterflies!!

You are very talented!! Looking forward to seeing and hearing more of your plans!

The invites look great! Are the butterflies on the outside embossed in the card, or is that part vellum? It's very pretty

It's part of the velum. We cut the velum to size and then used a glue stick to attach it (just at the top) to the card stock. The ribbon and dollar store embellishment was glued on with a glue gun.

This was my inspiration - trying to do something like this only smaller + with greenery - Butterfly Decoration

So I spent at least 4 hours today working on this spiral decoration thingy that will hang from the ceiling inside the church sanctuary.

This is the wire frame (green fence wire - folded into half and then half again; held together with more wire - this was the hardest part!). It's approx 10 ft tall and growing each time I add more weight!

With greenery attached

With flowers attached

I ran out of daylight so I still have to attach the 500 or so velum butterflies that I cut out, at a later date. I also have teeny mesh butterflies to wire into it.

I love the way it's turning out!

LOL I am hoping to use wire. Cross your fingers. I hung it from the upper balcony to work on it with a bungy cord - worse comes to worse, I will use that again and cover the bungy with greenery.
