How many fittings?
Did you have before you picked up your dress? The reason I ask is becasue I am only having one and that's to pin for alterations. They just did that (pinned for alterations) and now I'm just supposed to pick up the dress a few days before I leave for the wedding. I asked "What if it does not fit" she said "Oh it will fit, unless you loose a lot of weight". This whole thing freaks me out. I mean really WHAT IF IT DOESEN'T FIT???

I would ask to come in a week b-4 you are leaving just to make sure. Most people can and will get it right on the first fitting. But if you are scared just let them know you want to do it a week ahead of time.

I would insist on trying it on before leaving the store with it! How much time do you have between picking it up and the wedding?

Well I am glad to hear that this is normal. I guess I was under the impression that there were a lot of fittings I feel better now thanks.
BTW I am leaving on Tuesday and picking up the dress the Thursday before. That's about 5 days so I guess it should be ok. My guess is if it does not fit they better fix it and fast!

I don't know how many fittings are normal. I only had one fitting, and I'll probably try it on when I go to pick it up. My dress fit really well and I didn't need any alterations, only a bustle added. I think how many fittings you have depends on how well the dress fits when you buy it.
Is there any way you could ask them to let you try the dress on when you pick it up?? Or that you could schedule to pick up the dress earlier than planned, a couple weeks before the wedding and try it on then, just to make sure? It is a little sneaky, but that way they would have time to make alterations if it didn't fit.

I agree, I would be freaked out too. I would want to try it on and make sure before I left with it. And you also want to make sure there's time to fix it so I'd say about a week or so before your supposed to pick it up now.

They said I could try it on before I left with it, which I am planning on doing. There were a lot of alterations at the top as the dress is strapless and needed to really be taken in at the top. I kept making her pin it tighter becasue I do not want to be pulling it up all day. That's the only part I am really worried about. They did have to shorten it and put in a bustle. I just want to make sure it it tight enough at the top. I was just about to start my period when I tried it on and may have had a bit of water wight on me.

Well just in case it's still a little loose even after double checking you could by some double sided fashion tape or spray adhesive. It's not as uncomfortable as it sounds and should keep a oops from happening even it it's a little loose.

To avoid that, I have got a seamstress booked for the day before the wedding and all of us in the bridal party (even the boys) are going to go along and get any alterations made that need to be.

Fittings
My best advice, as an alteration specialist, is try on the gown before you leave the store. With a Thursday thru Tuesday window, any "tweaking" can be accomplished if the gown is not perfect.
I generally schedule between one and three fittings.
The first fitting is for the bodice. If there are no alterations in this area, the hem and bustle can be pinned. If there are alterations to the bodice, I do these first, and schedule a fitting to check these and fit for the hem and bustle. I always have my Brides try on the gown before leaving my shop. Ditto with Maids, Mothers, etc. I always leave time for "tweaking" because stress can do strange things to a body. And it is better to find out when I can fix it than an hour before the ceremony.
