invites
As I am going to be married on Aug 4th - the long weekend, when do I send out save the date cards and the actual invites?

You are getting married in August of 2007? Do you have a lot of people coming from OOT?
If you do, I would send the save-the-dates out 4-6 months in advance, to make sure they can make travel arrangements.
The invitations should go out about 2 months before the wedding.
Welcome to Pash!!

Actually, I think the save the dates go out a year to nine months before the date and the invites go out 6-8 weeks before the date.

I would send the save the dates out 9-12 months in advance, if you have your venues booked.

I didn't do STDs (so I'm of no use on that score ) But the invites would normally go out 6-8 weeks before hand.
You'd send them out a little earlier for those out of the country, or if you have a really popular wedding date (like second sat of june for some reason ).
Did you mean August 2006 or 2007? Just wondering If it is 2006 you won't have to send STD cards, because your invites will be due to go out in about 4-6 weeks time!
ETA: Nevermind. I just saw your other post and it is 2007. I think 6 months ahead is more than enough time for the actuall STD cards, but I'd tell people the date by word of mouth just as soon as you have a ceremony & reception venue booked. That way there is less chance of them booking their summer holidays then...

I'm not sure what etiquette says, but I like what Ann said. I personally think 9-12 months is too far out to send STDs; maybe spread the date around by word of mouth, and send out STDs closer to the wedding. I am getting married this August and I sent out STDs in January, so about 7 months ahead of time.
I know I wouldn't make travel arrangements 9-12 months in advance, even if I got a STD that early.

This post reminds me of when I needed to know when to send my Save the Dates. I was apparently behind because everyone's response was "NOW!"
I agree with the above - STDs should be sent anywhere from six to twelve months, depending on the number of OOT people you're inviting. Wedding invites go out six to eight weeks before the wedding.

I sent my Save the Dates in March, weddings in December, I don't think they normally need to go out that early but it's a holiday and half our guest are out of town.
What long weekend is in August?

STDs can be Good
We're getting married Aug. 17 and we're sending save the dates in early- to mid-February. Our rationale is that people may be planning summer vacations and they may wish to plan around our wedding or to travel to Oregon as part of their vacation.
We've already gotten inquiries from friends & family about whether they need to book accommodations (!) so we think the save-the-dates will help people feel a little more relaxed. Also, the wedding "weekend" festivities run Thursday afternoon through Sunday noon, so we've indicated "invitation and weekend itenerary to follow" so people know to reserve more than just the Saturday.
Finally, I like save the dates because you may discover early that some people can't attend, which helps you plan for catering more accurately, even before RSVPs are due.
