Vow renewals and anniveraries
All this talk about vow renewals has got me to thinking. Is 5 or 10 a better landmark for a vow renewal or is 25 best yet? Not that I ma thinking already of this.... But just wondering.
I think it's a sweet way to honor a love that is going strong! One thing we were told we could do is add a wedding band to the top of my rings as a milestone marker, I don't know about that, I have small fingers! Anyway, I am already trying to think of things for our two year mark. Let me show you something I found and will be showing Bob.

We have always talked of getting a boat (but have decided on an RV instead) and what an great way to maybe spend a long weekend this fall!

I think the anniversary for a vow renewal depends on the couple. Some couples may feel at a point at 5 yeras where they want to renew, and some at 10 or 25. I feel like I actually will want to do a vow renewal with just the two of us, and maybe our parents. I'd love to go to a tropical location and renew our vows on the beach...sort of like the laid-back, small wedding I never had.
Kim, the houseboats look great!! I'm not sure what we'll do for any of our anniversaries, it is obviously still a ways away. The coast is always a nice option though.

I agree that it depends on the couple. Jerry and I will probably have ours around 5 years simply because we're not having an actual wedding to begin with. We may not even wait that long, if we don't we'll go on a cruise by ourselves and think of it as a belated honeymoon instead.
I've never seen an actual houseboat before! I'm a I'm not much of a boat person, though... I get seasick easily.

I've thought about doing this with my husband for either our 5th or 10th anniversary. We've been through so much over the years (not all good), but still we manage to keep it together. I loved our "big" wedding, but I'd really love to renew vows on a beach or somewhere else and do a "private" vow renewal.

I like the 10 year mark as a renewal point. 5 sounds too soon. Aren't eternity bands a typical "gift" for the bride at 10+ years? I love those!!

Over here we get the eternity ring for the birth of your first child.
Though it seems to becoming more common to give them for the first wedding anniversay!
I'd rather wait until I'd had his child
On the vow renewal: I'd say 10yrs unless you had been through a pretty rocky patch, then I could see the need for having it sooner...

An eternity ring for the 1st anniversary??? Negative Nelly here...with half of all marriages ending in divorce, that seems a bit premature! LOL

Yeah, I thought eternity rings were for 10 year anniversaries. IMO you should wait until further along in your marriage to do the renewal. At least until 10 years. Maybe even 20. Especially if you have as great of a marriage as you do with Bob.

I think the Scottish/British version Ann described is great! I mean, once you have a child together, you'll always be in each others' lives. Even if something would happen to cause a divorce, you'll still have that connection. (Not that I would continue to wear the eternity band my ex gave me after a divorce, but I still think the idea is neat.)

I don't think they are made for men, just for women. I know my DH wouldn't want to wear diamonds on his ring....

FH is getting diamonds on his ring, but not all the way around....just 3 of them. I don't think he would want diamonds all the way around his ring either.

Okay, my wedding ring has diamonds half way around ---does that make it a half of eternity ring???
A little late with this, but I love the houseboat. I toured one at a fair and loved it (I like being on or near water, too, so calming).

I thought eternity rings were those three diamond rings that signify Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. A friend we know got one of these on her first anniversary, ummmmm she got married less than a month before us and already her marriage is rocky......... course long story there......
I think, if we ever would do a vow renewal, it would be a big mile marker anniversary, like 25 yrs. Our silver one sounds good.

My best girlfriend and her hubby renew every few years. Their promise is at least every 5 years.
Most often it is small, simple and meaningful to just them. They usually find a pretty, small and obscure chapel in the middle of no-where and exchange vows. They have also done it alone in the forest.

Robyn Lynn: They do call those rings half eternity rings over here!
My wedding band is actually a full eternity ring, I wanted a sparkly one because I knew I wouldn't be wearing my engagement ring most of the time. Moreno's mum doesn't really approve, but that is what was blessed by our priest & used in the ceremony so it is my wedding band!
I don't think eternity rings have to have stones all the way (or even half the way) around them. My Grandma's eternity ring had 5 stones in it: the birth stone of each of her three children, plus my grandpa's & her own. It was lovely
I agree that a year is far too quick to be getting your eternity ring!
Kim: The 3 stone ring is a trinity ring, it is most often used as an engagement ring, but there is no reason why it couldn't be used as an eternity band if that isn't what you had to get engaged.

Ann, is it common over there for those to be used as engagement rings?? I don't know that I would say it is most often used as an engagement ring over here.....at least not in my area.
I've seen it more marketed towards anniversaries (in the ads and things)...a "past, present, and future" ring. I actually don't know anyone who has it as an engagement ring. Interesting!!

Now you do... actually in the ring thread there are a few of us with eternity rings for E-rings.
Mine has the 3 larger past, present, future stones and then 3 tiny stones on each side of those. My wedding band is actually just a scaled down mini of my e-ring.
It has always been a personal and inside joke with Alan and I that he will "keep me around for a bit". I always asked "what a bit was?"
We now joke that I now have the answer.... "an eternity"

Hmmm.....I'll have to hunt down the ring thread again. I haven't seen it in a while. It will prove me wrong.

Add me to the list - I think that's what my e-ring is -a past, present, and future one. I don't know the official title of it. I just call it "my ring". I love it!!
