Here's what I wanted my cake to look like:
Here's what my cake ended up looking like:
The top and bottom layers were Bavarian cream (yellow cake with yellow custard) and the middle cake was chocolate with chocolate mousse.

ETA: The little white on the side is a cake for my parent's 25th wedding anniversary which was 3 days after my wedding!

I think my photographer must've liked my cake coz we literally had 11 photos of it as the main focus (and 5 where it is used in the background!)
But I'm not going to make you look at them all!
ETA: The cake shown in the photos above was a bit of a cheat! The middle two layers haven't got any cake inside! We wanted 2 layers of traditional rich fruit cake, but also two layers of coffee sponge with coffee buttercream, but the fruit layers were far to heavy to sit on top of sponge (and the top layer had to be fruit so we could save it) so we had coffee cake decorated in the same icing in the kitchen for the staff to cut & serve with the evening buffet! It looked just like the other cake and we totally got away with it!

I'm in love with your cake too! It's fantastic. I want a cake that my photographer can't stop looking at!

Not in the slightest! It was my bakers idea, but then she is a family friend so it's not like she was trying to get as much money as possible like some of the bakers!
You totally could not tell

This is not something new to me since I do cake decorating. People tend to do this is they are not having lots of people but want the look of a bigger cake. I did this for my friend when I did her cake bc she was having 75 people show up but she wanted her cake (these are pan sizes not filled with frosting) to be as follows 10" x 3" (saving for 1 yr), 12 x 3, 14 x 3, and 16 x 4 (dummy cake) which equals out to be 134 slices on the cakes I cut according to Wilton and this does not include the Groom's cake (8 x 3 = 24 slices) or the cake I made for their 1st son (6 x 3 = 12 slices).
Just so people know having a dummy cake does not always make your cake less expensive. It is based partly on the frosting and your design so if it is very detailed expect to pay for it still.

we had a little cake (no dummy layers for us, but that's b/cs i had to secure a cake very very last minute!!), but there was still plenty left over for us to eat for breakfast the next morning! we did not want to save the top layer either. i had regular buttercream frosting that i wanted swathed to look all messy, and had a rich dark chocolate cake on the inside. i can't remember if we had a filling or not ( )!! it definitely wasn't flavored if we did... if anything, it was just more buttercream.

rickey's cake was red velvet w/ cream cheese frosting dyed red so he could have an arkansas razorback cake. his mom made it. funny story: it was a sheet-cake cut into teh shape of a razorback. apparently his brother josh was so drunk from the night before the wedding he came home, saw the cake his mom had made and proceeded to eat the legs off teh cake! when his mom woke up that morning she came in and saw red icing/red cake stained all over josh's face and he STILL denied eating any of it!!! but she didn't tell me that til after the wedding... i didn't even know anything was wrong w/ the cake--she just smoothed that part of the cake by cutting and refrosting it and drawing on the legs w/ icing instead of them sticking out the way they originally did! so that's our mishap wedding story! i just wish she'd taken blackmail photos of josh passed out w/ the icing on his face!!

 I so agree!
I'm planning to surprise my FH with the grooms' cake - he doesn't know I'm planning to serve his favorite, blueberry cheesecake.

Margo making the cake, with help from one of our FG's, Lauren. Margo was my mom's MOH at my parents wedding in 1969.
We had Chocolate layers and White layers. We had filling but I can't recall which. And BTW, even after one year, it still tased good. At the wedding reception we only got a small bite of cake, everyone was hurrying us along to do the next thing so they could all relax and go home I think!
