Graduation gifts.
My brother in law is graduating tomorrow, and we were going to give him our spare microwave and tv, but he already has them. So what can you give an 18 year old guy. I don't want to give him traditional graduation gifts.
Chuck (BIL) is a shy guy, he is giong to OSU. He is going to be an engineer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know!
My little BIL is graduating high-school in June too, and going to college in our city. (I'm so excited about that!) So for Xmas we wanted to get him something different too, and something we know he would like. We got him a small fridge that most kids have in the dorms. It's the next best thing to having a microwave. A lot of colleges rent them out and you pay a deposit, so this would actually save him some cash. We got his at Walmart for about $70 I think.
I also plan to give him a "correspondance package" when he gets here. In it I will have stamps, envelopes, an address book with all of his family information listed, thank you notes, birthday cards, etc. I don't know that he'll use it, lol, but I know it's something I would have wanted.
When I went away to college, my Mom put together a big wicker clothes basket full of things like toothpaste, shampoo, soap, rolls of quarters for laundry, laundry soap, razors, etc.

my mil and sfil got him a frig. The basket full of bath/laundry stuff might be handy, but i don't know if he will use it cuz my other bil lives right off of osu's campus. This is why I am so stumped, they have pretty much everything.

Well, even if his BIL lives nearby, he will probably shower on campus if he lives on campus. And the basket will still be useful to transport laundry.
What about non-perishible food and a microwave? Ramen, easy mac, soup -- college staples.
Or money for textbooks is good...a calling card is good...mattress pad for the dorm bed...a comfy chair that folds out (like a butterfly chair)...just supplies, like pens, notebooks, binders, paper clips, stapler...a small assemble it yourself bookshelf...
...I think that's all I've got!

Do you have Walmart near you? If so, you can give him a gift card and that way he can pick out exactly what he will need for college as time goes along.

I got one of these (only mine wasn't fleece) when I graduated HS and left for college, I still have it (that was 10 years ago)....
Also, a day planner was something I got into the habit of using in college and still do.
