music for a lunch reception
hey everyone! i have a question...i'm having a summer lunch reception at my church fellowship hall and we're not going to have dancing because it's lunch time and i doubt many people will feel like dancing. however, we are going to play music in the background and i was wondering if you could tell me what type of music you think would be appropriate. i don't want anything too upbeat because i don't want guests to be confused about whether they should dance or not and i don't want anything too slow because that would just be boring. So what type of music, or specific songs if you know of any, do you think would be good? thanks!

First, welcome to Pash!!
Second...the first thought that came to mind when I read your post was to have some sort of instrumental music playing. In my mind, people associate most lyrical music (not all) with dancing; slow songs with romance and slow dancing, more upbeat songs with fast dancing. You could do some upbeat classical guitar or other instruments. (I'm biased because FH plays guitar and I love it.)
Would you absolutely hate it if people did dance? I'm just thinking, unless you make an announcement, there may still be people among your guests that will dance regardless of the kind of music that is played.

I would play some mellow but nice stuff - specific selections by Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, Grateful Dead, Otis Redding - if you want, I could give you some of their song names that might be appropriate.

Welcome to Pash!
Are you having a DJ or are you doing the music via cds? I agree with Maroki, keep the classical in mind.
SW - I'm an old hippie at heart and I can boogie to the Dead. It wouldn't stop me.
