Getting to know you (lisa82)
I was thinking that since this is sort of a "new" site, that it might be interesting to do a more formal introduction of ourselves. It could be brought up for future reference to new members so that they could get to know the members and maybe feel a little more up to date and involved. I know that when I joined the old site, I spent days going over all the old posts to try and get a feel for the old members and learn a bit about them. What do you guys think? I guess i'll start, try and get the ball rolling...

Lisa82
Hi, my name is Lisa. I'm 23 and live in British Columbia, Canada.
I'm the youngest of 4 kids. I have 2 brothers and 1 sister. This is just me, my mom, and my dad (I don't think I have any with all of us together!)
You can tell from the pic how sick my mom was. She died from complications of MS in 91', only a week after my oldest brothers wedding. I'm just glad that she got to be there for that. My dad got remarried about a year and a half later. And with my step-mom came 2 step-brothers and 2 step-sisters. But I don't have any pictures of them, most of them are all quite a bit older than me and live really far away so I really don't know them much at all. And my one step brother died about 3 or 4 years after they got married, I only met him once. But my one step-sister lived with us, and she now has a cute little nephew for me, he's 22 months! My dad passed away in August of this year of a massive heart attack. After that happened I really didn't want to have a wedding. I still wanted to get married, but not have the wedding I had wanted. But thanks to the ladies on here and their words of wisdom, I decided to give it a bit of time to make my decision. Thanks Ladies! My oldest brother is happily married and has 2 girls (7 & 5) and a boy (3). My sister is also married, she has 5 step kids (the oldest is her age....long story). And just 3 days ago, my other brother sent me an invitation to his wedding...it's next week!!! Lol, it's going to be very small, should be a lot of fun! As for me... I met Sam (my FH) probably about 6 or 7 years ago. Here's a pic of my baby!
He was the brother of one of my friends from High school. I didn't think too much of him since he was older (5 years older) and had a kid *yikes*. I ended up dating another guy after graduation who was also older (only 2 years older) and... also had a kid. We moved in together (for 2 months) and things didn't work out. It was hard for me to get over since I had been in love with this guy since i was probably about... 12. So yeah, I was a bit of a basket case. When I moved back home, Sam was there for me the whole way. Even witnessed my drunken, crying, moaning, pshycotic episode when I tried to get the ex to take me back. Lol, he must be crazy to want to be with me after seeing that! He always jokes that he knows i'm a psycotic b*tch, but loves me anyways! So now we've been together for just over 4 years. And they have been the best and most rewarding years of my life. His 8 year old son lives with us full time, so I have been trying to learn how to be a good mother. I still have a ways to go, but i'm trying! Here is a pic of his son... this is of our trip to Victoria 2 weeks ago, He's in an exhibit in the museum pretending to be scared, lol, what a cutie!
As for a proposal story... I guess i'm still waiting. I mean, I have my ring, but he never actually proposed. We picked out my ring together across the line in Washington State, so to avoid paying duty I just wore the ring across. Never took it off! I don't know if i'll ever get an official proposal, I guess it doesn't really matter. I get to marry him either way! Yay for me!!!
Anyways...that's my life story. Now I want to hear everyone else's!!! Don't leave out any details!
WARNING!!! This took me an hour and a half!!!

Thanks for starting this
I'm so sorry to hear that you've already suffered through the loss of BOTH parents. You are a strong woman. I don't know how I'd cope without my parents.

Well, with a little over 6 months to go, Sam and I finally sat down last night, for the first time, and planned our wedding! Glad we're having a very simple wedding! So, it will be in our back yard, ceremony at 5 dinner at 6. I want an early evening ceremony so it will be cooler outside so no one will get too hot and uncomfortable. We decided to have a catered dinner so that it will be low maintenance for us and our families. We just want everyone to party and have a good time! I want to have snacks and drinks set up for everyone when they arrive so they can relax while they are waiting for the ceremony to start. We are hoping for a very FAST ceremony, like 10 or 15 min. Then party party party! My sister took me to try on dresses last week. She just wanted me to try them on so she could see what styles looked best on me and what size I am so she could make my dress. But, I found one that I really like, and she thinks the price is reasonable, so she may just buy it for me, but we'll see. Here's a couple of pics of the one i'm in love with:
Here's the back of it:
The pics aren't very good cuz we had to sneak them, they said that we weren't allowed to take pictures of the dresses because they are copywrited or something...i don't know, it didn't make any sense to me. But here is a link some better pictures: http://www.venusbridal.com/cgi-bin/d...ess=6478ft.jpg
So far our guest list is between 50-60 people, just family and very close friends. I'm so nervous at the thought of having to be in front of so many people! I know i'll be crying and probably messing up my vows, oh well! Not sure yet if we will have ring bearers and flower girls. FH son doesn't want to do it unless my neices want to be flower girls, so I guess we'll see what happens there. Either way it doesn't matter to me, i want him to, but i don't blame him for not wanting to be in front of everyone. We won't be having bridesmaids or groomsmen, too much hassel and expense, plus in our group of friends, friendships have been ruined over it. Our colours will be blue, purple, and white. Our flowers will be hydrangeas and possibly white roses depending on how they look together. I'll be doing all the decorations, flowers, etc myself. We have a beautiful hydrangea bush in our front yard, so i'll just have to pick up some white roses (if i decide to go that route). As for a cake, we want something thats inexpensive and tasty. So I think we'll just get a huge strawberry shortcake sheetcake from Save-on (FH's favorite cake!). Then we'll set up our huge speakers and stereo in the back yard and dance (and drink) the night away! I just want everyone to have a fun time. Yay! finally getting organized!

I think your wedding sounds fantastic, it'd be really fun to be a guest at that one. And that dress is beautiful! It's perfect, really shows of your little waist!

I like the dress! Do you think you're going to get it? That's what happened with me actually...my mom was going to make it, but we went shopping to see what kind of style looked good on me and we ended up just buying it becuase she wouldn't be able to make it for the price we bought the dress for. I love all the detail, and the corset back!
beautiful ring too! Do you have a wedding band yet?

My sister ordered the dress for me on Thursday!!! I'm so excited, I love that dress so much! It isn't supposed to be in until May, but the lady said there is a chance it may come in earlier. Here's hoping for earlier I went with my sister about a month ago to try on dresses. I found this one at a shop in my area. My sister lives in Bellingham and found this dress at a shop near her for $60 less...and that's even after exchange! Now we just have to find a way to get it back up here to Canada without having to pay duty on it. Any ideas? Now i'm just working on wedding favors. What are your opinions on these?
http://www.discountmugs.com/shot-glasses.htm
or
http://www.discountmugs.com/bud-vase-glass.htm
I'm kind of leaning towards the bud vase, just because they can either be used as a mega shooter glass for the drunks, or a bud vase for the non drinkers in the crowd. The other thing i'm working on is center pieces...that i'm having some trouble with. I really don't want anything that costs much money. We have a huge hydrangea bush in our front yard so I may just use those for the tables...free, so thats good, but it just seems kind of boring. Maybe just add a few candles around the flowers and some sparkley confetti? Hmmm...am I forgetting anything? I hope i'm not too behind on my planning, hard to believe there is less than 6 months till the big day! What should I have done by now?

Both Shot glass and Bud vase are a good idea. I personally like the Bud Vase better. You could even make them part of your centerpieces if you wanted to.
On not paying duty, I don't really know since Im from so far south. Could she wear it to avoid paying it. And then right after she gets past have her change into something different.

That's a pretty cool idea. Hmmm... Now I'm considering ordering the wine glasses for use at the party and then guests could take them home. But would they really want to use a wine glass with our names on it?!?
Anyway, I think I would go for the bud vase. While I'm sure the shot glasses would go over big with your friends, I can't imagine older relatives would be too pleased with it.

I think the bud vase is a great idea, you can even use them for reception decor by sticking a little something in each one at each place setting. I don't think the hydrangea is a boring idea at all, I would go for it and google hydrangea centerpieces, there are a lot of good ideas for dressing them up a little bit. DIY network has this one that puts the flowers with lemons in the vase -- it looks pretty and fresh to me, and would be pretty inexpensive, especially if you did it on a smaller scale than this one. Don't know if it's your style, but it's pretty unique and definitely interesting.

Hope this helps! Congrats on how well things are pulling together.

Jen, could you find wine glasses in your colors instead, maybe? That way it would fit into people's homes but still function to remind them of your day and dress up your party.

I don't want to hijack Lisa's thread(!) but I was just checking out that website and thinking about if I wanted to go for glasses. If I do, I was thinking maybe the pub glasses over the wine glasses just because I could more easily see the ladies drinking wine from the pub glasses than I could see the men drinking beer from wine glasses. The whiskey glasses would be more "all purpose" but they're really too small for beer. I also think a pub glass with a "logo" could get more use in someone's home than wine glasses. Obviously, you're not going to serve guests wine in someone else's wedding's wine glass (LOL!) but would you use the logo glass daily just to have a glass of milk or iced tea or something? Sure! Why not! So, now I'm thinking if I want to use plastic glasses and the shell ornament favors or totally steal Lisa's idea (THANK YOU!!!) and just use personalized glasses that they could take home. Which would avoid my initial worry that if I used "real glasses" I'd have nowhere to put them. But people could just give them a little rinse and be out the door! My sister actually did that with plastic stadium cups at her wedding. It was something I thought about, but now that I see they have actual glassware that you can personalize, it's definitely something I'd really consider.
Ok, SORRY Lisa!! We're back to you!

Thing are going really well with the wedding planning. Seems to be plugging on at a pretty steady pace. We got our deposit into the Caterers last week and are just working on the menu. It will be a buffet dinner. How does this sound... Salads:Tossed Green Salad, Traditional Greek Salad, Ceasar Salad. Veggies: Peas with onions, Broccoli in butter sauce. Potato: Mashed Potato. Entrees: Turkey and Stuffing, Lasagne. Dessert: Fruit Tray. They also include: Meat and cheese trays, pickle trays, devilled eggs, buns and butter, all sauces and condiments, and coffee and tea. All of this at $17 per person. Is that a good price? I thought it was, but I have absolutly no experience with this sort of thing.
My neices and nephew want to be in the wedding, actually they are really excited about it, so we will be having 2 flower girls and 2 ringbearers. I bought the boys pants the other day. Just some light tan kahkis they were on sale for $9. Now i'm just working with my sister on the girls dresses. She still has the pattern for a dress that she made me when I was little that I absolutly loved! So i'm hoping to make the same dress with Eyelet cotton probably in green since that's what the girls asked for. Just have to find a green that goes well with purple and blue. As for the boys shirts??? I still have no idea, i'll just have to keep my eyes open I guess.
We also have our Marriage Commissioner booked. I found her online from the Vital Statistics Web site. She has been REALLY helpful. She sent me link after link to different sites for our vows. So that's another thing i'll have to work on. Anyone have any ideas? I'm looking to keep it as short and sweet as possible, i'm terrified of talking infront of people, even BEING in front of people. The less I have to say the better.
So I guess the only thing I really have left to figure out is our table and chair rentals. I'll leave that for Sam to do. I guess he already has some thing in mind, i'll just have to make sure he actually get in there and books the stuff and gets the deposit in.
What am I forgetting???

Sounds like things are really coming together, Lisa. I'm not sure about the Canadian/American exchange rate, but $17 sounds like a great deal to me. (While I know some parts of the US girls have gotten prices that make me , in my area the typical range is American $80-120 per person.) What kind of shirt are you thinking for the boys? Do you want a solid color, formal look, or are you going casual? IF you want something casual to go with the khakis that incorporates your colors, here's a site for Hawaiian shirts where I ordered my kids' outfits from:
http://store.shirtsofhawaii.com/alshco.html
I have no idea if that's remotely close to what you were thinking. Just when you talked about the green and purple and blue, I just automatically thought of the Hawaiian shirts--maybe in muted shades of those colors.
So, you want to write (or find) your own vows instead of going with something standard? Are you looking for religious or civil ceremony? I have no doubt the girls will come up with something perfect!

Time to bore you with more pics!!!
Ok, here are some more pictures.
Cupie Jen, here's my wedding band (with my engagement ring) you were asking about. Sorry I took so long!
The Bud Vases that we are using as favors:

and a better picture of the writing:
This is the $ .99 ceramic bowls and $ .39 floating candles we got for our centerpieces:
These are the fake hydrangea petals for decoration around the bowls (or whatever else we can use them for):

Lisa, I was just thinking about the wedding dress, could you just gently pack it in a large suit case? How much would the duty be? It maybe cheaper to just pay it rather than pack the dress and worry about hard to get out wrinkles and creases.................

Breezy, I got them at "The Great Canadian Superstore" just a canadian grocery store chain. If you really like them I could see if they have any left and send you some. They were really cheap $4.55 each including tax. Or if your wedding is after ours, and they are still in good shape (and I don't see why they wouldn't be), you can just have ours. Either way, if your interested, let me know.
Kim, I think your right about the wedding dress. It's probably best just to pay the duty and avoid paying more to get the wrinkles out. I'll have to see what my sister has in mind.

MTGH, Thanks for the link to that site for the boys shirts. They have some really beautiful stuff on there! But i couldn't find one that would work with the girls dresses . So my sister and I went to the fabric store and picked up this pattern. (We're making the tan shirt)
Now i'm just hopeing they will go with the girls dresses! The girls dresses are white eyelet cotton with a see through shimmery purple tie at the back. This is the pattern we're using for the girls dresses (it's the same pattern my sister used to make dresses for me when I was little, I absolutly loved it!!! so comfortable!)

(not the dress with the ruffle I don't really like ruffles)
I can't wait to replace these pictures with pictures of the finished product!!!
